Unmanned Aircraft Makes USCG Icebreaker Landing

Coast Guard and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration researchers report the successful landing of an unmanned aircraft system on the flight deck of Coast Guard Cutter 'Healy', marking the first time a UAS has completed a take-off and landing aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker. UAS operators from AeroVironment, designers of the Puma All Environment UAS, working alongside researchers from the Coast Guard Research and Development Center and NOAA made necessary adjustments following several unsuccessful attempts to land the Puma AE on the icebreaker’s flight deck. High winds, heavy fog, and icing conditions delayed further attempts until Monday night when skies cleared enough for another attempt.

ThyssenKrupp Acquires Waterjet Business Activities

ThyssenKrupp Aerospace, via its U.K. subsidiary, has acquired the business activities of The Waterjet Group, based in Darton, South Yorkshire/U.K. The closing took place on July 31, 2013. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The Waterjet Group (around 40 employees) was established in 2002 and is a U.K. waterjet cutting company for the aerospace industry. The company has several waterjets and related value add equipment, a large number of aerospace approvals and to a smaller extent also serves other high-tech industries, including the medical technology sector. The Waterjet Group operates out of a site near Leeds. With its equipment the company is able to process a wide range of materials and sizes for the European and international customer base.

Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. welcomed John Ferguson, Business Development Manager, to their Offshore Support Division. Ferguson has over 17 years of experience in the offshore and international Oil and Gas industry. He will be using his expertise to prepare for opening a Houston office as the General Manager. His current responsibilities include expanding Global's commercial diving, ROV, and environmental services within the Gulf of Mexico region and evaluating international market potential.

TMCA Elects New Board of Directors and Officers

The Transportation Marketing & Communications Association (TMCA) elected seven new representatives to their board of directors, a new secretary and vice president to officer positions. This year's election was approved by an electronic ballot that was voted upon by TMCA members during the first two weeks of May. The election also involved a change in bylaws that increased the number of board members from eight to 10 seats. in all modes and market segments in North American transportation," said Brian Everett, ABC, TMCA's executive director.
