Ships Get Older and Slower as Emissions Rules Bite

Marine Shipping Sector Eyes LNG to Meet Clean Fuel Rules

With new global emissions standards looming, the marine shipping industry is increasingly looking at liquefied natural gas as alternative to high-sulfur bunker fuel, shipping and energy executives said at a global gas summit this week. Already used to fuel ferry fleets and cruise ships, LNG is gaining traction among freight and cargo shippers, despite a reluctance by the entrenched industry to make major changes. The stakes are high: the global shipping fleet now consumes about 4 million barrels per day of high sulfur fuel oil. "Ship owners are very conservative, they're generally a little slower to act... But it's going to happen," Peter Keller, chairman of SEA\LNG and executive VP of maritime firm Tote Inc, told Reuters at the World Gas Conference in Washington.

Focus on Environment at Suny Maritime

The State University of New York Maritime College’s 140th Anniversary Speaker Series presented a panel discussion on March 26 in the College’s Maritime Academic Center. The topic was Environmental Issues in Shipping. Panelists included Michael C. Carter, Director of the Office of Environment, U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration; John Hatley, Americas Vice President Ship Power, Wärtsilä North America; and Paal Johansen, Vice President and Regional Director, Regional Office Americas Houston, DNV GL – Maritime. For Ferries, Commercial Light at End of Regulatory Tunnel

A review of the ferry industry’s latest challenges and opportunities attracted a record 340 delegates to Vancouver last week for the 39th annual Interferry conference. The global trade association event exposed a string of concerns – notably over punitive safety and environmental regulations – but also highlighted the financial potential of new routes, onboard shopping incentives and the use of LNG fuel. Alongside sessions on the future of the industry, Canada-based CEO Len Roueche outlined a vision for maintaining Interferry’s influential lobbying role among politicians and regulators.

More than 150 shipping industry professionals from around the world gathered this month in Stamford, Conn., for SHIPPINGInsight 2014 – a technical and ship operations forum for the maritime industry in North America. The annual SHIPPINGInsight event, held Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, encompassed three days of presentations, discussions, debates and networking. Participants represented a cross section of all sectors of the shipping industry – shipowners, ship managers, classification societies, technology suppliers, IT companies, consultants, professional service providers and others.

Shippers Must Reduce Costs, Boost Efficiency

So what’s keeping ship operators awake at night these days? Plenty, it seems. Sluggish recovery from a lingering worldwide recession, unsustainable debt loads, endemic overcapacity in most shipping trades, punishing freight rates, rising costs of fuel and regulatory compliance and a lingering sense that ships are not running as efficiently as they could. The last two topics – reducing fuel costs while complying with emission regulations and improving ship operating efficiency – will take center stage at SHIPPINGInsight 2014, scheduled for Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 in Stamford, Conn.

Jeff Lantz to Address Upcoming Interferry Annual Conference

The conference organizers inform that In a further response to the sinking of the South Korean ferry 'Sewol' in April, safety issues will be centre stage at Interferry’s 39th annual conference, which takes place in Vancouver from October 4-8, 2014. Prompted by the incident, the trade association is already in dialogue with the IMO about assisting in efforts to improve domestic ferry safety. Now these and other cooperative safety initiatives will feature in a wide-ranging conference agenda addressing the industry’s major regulatory, commercial and technical challenges. The IMO’s latest safety strategy will be examined by special guest speaker Jeff Lantz, US Coastguard regulations director and chairman of the IMO Council.

MARAD's Jaenichen to Open NAMEPA 'Winds of Change' Conference

Acting Maritime Administrator, Paul “Chip” Jaenichen will open the “Winds of Change in Shipping” conference being hosted by NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) in Houston along with the WGMA (West Gulf Maritime Association) on February 19, 2014. The next day, February 20th, NAMEPA is partnering with NOIA (National Ocean Industries Association) to present the “Winds of Change in Offshore Oil and Gas”. Adding even more luster to this period is the inaugural Lloyd’s List North American Awards Dinner on February 19th, where winners of 17 categories will be presented.

Wärtsilä's Hatley Honored by SNAME

John Hatley, Americas Vice President Ship Power, Wärtsilä North America, was announced as the 1st place author in “The Winning Authors of Best Papers Presented at 2012 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).”

Hatley’s paper titled, “New Marine Era for Gas”, was presented during the technical program of the 2012 Offshore Technology Conference that took place April 30 – May 3 in Houston, TX. His presentation covered the five drivers of preference for LNG natural gas. These drivers include, the availability and affordability of shale gas and the three United States Environmental Protection Agency mandates that cover: sulphur content reductions in fuel, the geographic Emissions Control Area, and the stringent engine emissions reductions.

Wärtsilä to donate diesel engine and equipment to SUNY Maritime College Engineering Department; Donation valued at $1 million. Wärtsilä to Equip First U.S. LNG OSV

Wärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading gas solutions provider, will deliver an integrated propulsion system based on the use of LNG for two offshore support vessels for operation in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first time U.S. flagged offshore supply vessels will run on clean and efficient LNG, which offers operational savings and environmental benefits. Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract in October 2011 to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion equipment for two advanced offshore supply vessels owned by Harvey Gulf International Marine.

Ship Emissions & Efficiency Agenda, GL North American Meeting

NOTE: This is part one of a two-part series on the ABCs of emissions requirements in the marine industry. Today environmental concerns are at the forefront of the public and represent a major effort by vessel owners to meet compliance standards. Many operators find the elaborate acronyms and various definitions confusing when maneuvering through the variety of regulatory requirements. How to meet the compliance standards in a timely fashion can be at first intimidating until acquiring a basic understanding of emission ABC's. International and U.S. Three dominant emission standards are applicable or enforceable for marine diesel engines : MARPOL Annex VI, EPA Marine Tier I, and EPA Marine Tier II.
