China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has taken delivery of Asia’s first tugboat Hai Yang Shi You 525, designed to operate solely on liquefied natural gas as ship’s fuel. Hai Yang Shi You 525, the first of two tugs built by the Zhenjiang shipyard for CNOOC, features a propulsion package based on twin Rolls-Royce Bergen C26:33L9PG engines and a pair of highly reliable Rolls-Royce US 205 CP azimuth thrusters to ensure the tugs have rapid manoeuvring and strong bollard pull capabilities. Bergen Tankers’ 95-meter-long chemical and product tanker Bergen Viking has returned to service following its conversion from diesel-electric to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion. Delivered in 2007, the Rolls-Royce powered vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coastline in trade for Statoil as part of a fleet of six vessels owned by Bergen Tankers AS. Bergen Viking’s retrofit saw four of the ship’s original six diesel generating sets replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generating sets.

The shipbuilding company Kleven in Norway has announced a contract for two fishing stern trawlers to be designed and equipped by Rolls-Royce. The fishing vessels have been ordered by the German company DFFU, which is fully owned by the Icelandic seafood company Samherji. The contract is worth in excess of $17million to Rolls-Royce. Samherhji is among the world’s largest investors in the fishing industry and they have decided on to two highly innovative vessel concepts of Roll-Royce NVC 374 WP design.

Kleven has signed a contract with DFFU, daughter company of Icelandic seafood company Samherji, for the construction of two stern trawlers of Rolls-Royce’ NVC 374 WP design. The vessels are to be delivered from Kleven’s Myklebust Verft in Gursken, Norway, in February and June 2017. Cortland announce the recent award of a patented BOB 12x12 Fiber Rope by Rolls Royce for use on its next Fiber Rope Deployment System (FRDS), which is based on their patented Cable Traction Control Unit (CTCU) technology. The FRDS system, which will have a single fall capacity of 150t, is being built for AKOFS Offshore (AKOFS) and will be deployed on the Aker Wayfarer working on a five year contract for Petrobras. This is the fourth FRDS that will be utilizing Cortland’s BOB 12x12 Fiber Rope since 2006.

Rolls-Royce informs it has secured a contract to supply a power and propulsion package for an ice-class multipurpose vessel under construction at Keppel Singmarine for Singaporean ship owner New Orient Marine Pte Ltd. The propulsion package includes a 1,650kW and two 3,000kW tunnel thrusters, two US ARC 0.8 main azimuth thrusters and a single 3,000kW retractable thruster. As well as four Bergen B32:40V12ACD and two Bergen C25:33L6ACD generating sets which will supply the requisite power to the £132 million offshore vessel.

Rolls-Royce would like to congratulate Farstad Shipping ASA for their recently named highly advanced subsea and construction vessel Far Sleipner. The event also marks the first delivery of a vessel equipped with the latest generation dynamic positioning system DP3 from Rolls-Royce. Designed and built by Vard (Vard 3 07), the vessel is equipped with Rolls-Royce bridge controls, DP3, engines and propulsion. Børge Nakken, Farstad Shipping, Vice President Technology & Development, said: “The DP3 positioning system onboard Far Sleipner ensures that the vessel stays in position, even in the event of an unforeseen situation, for instance if one out of two separate machinery systems fails.

Rolls-Royce has secured a landmark agreement to supply six of its new B33:45 medium-speed diesel generator sets to China’s Fuijan Mawei shipyard for configuration aboard the world’s first ever seabed mining vessel. The pioneering vessel, designed by Singapore’s SeaTech Solutions for Dubai-based owner Marine Assets Corporation (MAC), will be powered by six B33:45L9A engines to provide 31.4 megawatts of power. Fjord Line's liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered newbuildings have claimed a new title as the 'world's cleanest ferries'. The Bergensfjord and Stavangerford have won the respective first and second places on the World Ports Climate Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which measures the emissions of over 3000 ships. The LNG-fuelled ferries are both powered by four Rolls-Royce BV12PG gas engines that drive highly efficient Rolls-Royce PROMAS integrated rudder and propellers. Of the 3194 ships currently on the ESI list, Bergensfjord scored 93.9 points followed by sister vessel Stavangerfjord with 93.5. Only 50 vessels had a score higher than 49. Fjord Line’s Technical and Nautical Director, Morten Larsen said Rolls Royce’s engines were responsible for the high position on the list.

Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract worth $30.6m with the American owner Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO). The contract for ship equipment comprises Azimuth main propulsion, propulsion control systems, anchor winches and an anchor handling crane for an Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessel (AHTS). The contract also includes an option for equipment for a second vessel of similar type. The vessel is designed by ECO’s North American Shipbuilding and will be built to Polar Class 3, equipped to operate in arctic waters with air temperature down to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Maersk Supply Service has exercised an option to add Rolls-Royce’s new Anchor Recovery Frames (ARF) to the supply contract awarded in December for deck machinery for six anchor handler vessels under construction at Norway’s Kleven Verft AS. Rolls-Royce informs that the contract marks the first reference for its next generation ARF, designed in cooperation with Maersk to optimize vessel safety and efficiency. Rolls-Royce has signed a collaboration agreement with Spanish energy company Gas Natural Fenosa to develop and install a pure-gas Bergen engine aboard the Baleària-operated ferry Abel Matutes. According to Rolls-Royce , the contract gives the company its first reference for a pure-gas engine installation on a European-flagged ferry operating outside of Norwegian waters. Rolls-Royce is to deliver an extensive package of advanced deck machinery to six new high-end anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS) to be built by Kleven in Norway for the Danish ship owner Maersk Supply Service. The contract with Kleven is worth in excess of £54m to Rolls-Royce, and includes an option for an additional four vessels. This represents the largest single contract for deck machinery that Rolls-Royce has won. The 95m long vessels are designed by Salt Ship Design, and will be built at Kleven's two shipyards in Norway: Kleven Verft and Myklebust Verft.

Rolls-Royce has won a £12 million order to provide design, integrated power and propulsion systems and equipment for a highly advanced multipurpose service vessel for the Norwegian ship owner Myklebusthaug Management to be built at the Beşiktaş Shipyard in Turkey. This latest contract will see the first UT design vessel to be built by a Turkish shipyard. Around 800 Rolls-Royce UT vessels have been built or are under construction since the first one entered service 40 years ago. The vessel is a brand new design type from Rolls-Royce. The UT 7521 WP will be prepared for a range of offshore duties. The overall length of the vessel will be 98.9 metres with a beam of 21 metres and deadweight of approx. 6000 tons.

Kleven’s Myklebust Verft in Gursken, Norway, has signed a modification contract with Ocean Yield ASA, a ship owning company with investments within oil-service and industrial shipping, to convert the Aker Wayfarer into a deepwater subsea equipment support vessel (SESV). The vessel is presently under long term charter with AKOFS Offshore. The modifications made at Myklebust Verft will enable the deepwater subsea equipment support vessel to install and retrieve deepwater subsea equipment; subsea trees and modules, including subsea structures and manifolds.

The Armon shipyard in Gijón, Spain has entered into a contract to build a new Stern Trawler for the Norwegian fishing company Ramoen. The vessel will be a Rolls-Royce design, type NVC 372, and the contract value is £6.5 million to Rolls-Royce. The 75 meter long vessel will carry out traditional fishing operations for whitefish and shrimps, and will be equipped for both bottom and pelagic trawl. Rolls-Royce has won a £19m contract with the Norwegian shipbuilding group Vard to deliver deck machinery, propulsion and engines to a new offshore construction and anchor handling vessel (OCV) for the Norwegian owner REM Supply. The vessel will be designed by Vard. The new vessel is developed for underwater construction work and anchor handling operations in Arctic waters and will have approximately 380 to 400 ton bollard pull to fulfill the demands for operational power in the deepwater segment. Rolls-Royce signed a contract with Detroit Chile SA to supply offshore cranes to nine Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) presently under construction at Detroit Brasil Ltda. shipyard, in Itajaì, Brazil. The delivery will include nine ship sets of the dual draglink crane, making eighteen cranes in total. Upon completion, the vessels, designed by Guido Perla, will enter service on an eight-year contract with state-owned Brazilian oil company Petrobras. Brazilian Starnav Serviços Marìtimos Ltda, a subsidiary of Detroit Chile, will operate the vessels.

Rolls-Royce says it has won a £50m contract to deliver deck machinery for four large anchor handlers for Edison Chouest Offshore. The vessels are designed by North American Shipbuilder Inc. and will be built in Brazil by Estaleiro Navship LTDA. The four vessels have been specially developed to operate in Brazilian waters under an eight year long contract with Petrobras, but will meet all demands for world-wide operations. The deck machinery delivered by Rolls-Royce will include low pressure high torque winches, stern rollers, anchor handling cranes and anchor launch and recovery systems (A-LARS). All mechanical, hydraulic and electric systems are included in the package.

Rolls-Royce says it has secured a contract to design and equip a large offshore support vessel for Norwegian ship owner Island Offshore. The vessel, named 'Island Victory', will be a multi-functional design with a flexible operational profile, and will be one of the largest vessels in Island Offshore's fleet. The UT 797 CX design from Rolls-Royce features a 250 ton offshore crane, Remotely Operated Vessels (ROV's) and a large moonpool, enabling the vessel to perform heavy anchor handling operations and deep subsea installation work. The bollard pull will be more than 400 tons and the vessels will be 123 meters long and encompass a deck area of 1100 sq m. The contract has a value in excess of £17 million for Rolls-Royce. The deck machinery delivery from Rolls-Royce will consist of anchor handling winches, secondary winches, auxiliary winches, anchor handling cranes and a wide range of safer deck operation equipment. The engine delivery consists of two main engines and three main generator engines. AHTS vessels are built to handle anchors for oil rigs and perform rig moves.
