The Virginia Port Authority Board (VPA) of Commissioners today introduced Stephen Edwards as the next leader of The Port of Virginia. He succeeds John F. Reinhart who for the last seven years has led the VPA as its CEO and executive director.Edwards has extensive experience in the global transportation industry most recently as the president and CEO of TraPac, LLC (TraPac), which operates container terminals in Los Angeles, Oakland and Florida. His tenure with the VPA begins on January 19, 2021.“I am delighted to be joining the Virginia Port Authority team in January,” Edwards said.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has announced that it will supply 25 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers to the Port of Virginia, a growing, deep water port on the U.S. East Coast.The $23 million (USD) order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q3 order intake, and represents the exercising of a contract option for further units that was agreed upon in 2017. Delivery of the new machines is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2020.The new units will be delivered to Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), which is the port’s largest terminal and capable of handling the biggest vessels in the Atlantic trade. In an address to Western Dredging Association (WEDA) stakeholders, William P. Doyle, CEO & Executive Director Dredging Contractors of America told his audience: It all starts with dredging. Good Morning, and thank you for inviting me here today to open-up the conference. This is my first time addressing the Western Dredging Association (WEDA), and I am honored to be here. It all starts with dredging, and President Donald J. Trump is backing it up with critical legislative measures. As I will address later in my remarks– the U.S. dredging companies are truly American companies, spending billions of dollars building all of our ships in American shipyards and staffing our ships with American officers a crew.

The Georgia Ports Authority and the Virginia Port Authority filed on Friday, Feb. The agreement encourages voluntary cooperation in the areas of operational and supply chain efficiencies, safety, communications and customer service. “The U.S. East Coast continues to see larger vessels and cargo exchanges since the opening of the expanded Panama Canal last year,” VPA CEO and Executive Director John Reinhart and GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said in a joint statement. “Increasingly, our customers are seeking gateway ports on the East Coast that can leverage sufficient landside infrastructure to ensure the free flow of cargo. The states of Georgia and Virginia have made the necessary investments to prepare for this new era in global trade.

Just two months after hitting an all-time high for monthly container volume in March, the Virginia Port Authority did it again. In May, the port moved 230,511 containers as measured in standard 20-foot units, or TEUs, a 13 percent increase from the same month a year ago. "We are on pace to show significant growth - set records - for both the calendar and fiscal year," said John Reinhart, executive director and CEO of the authority, in a statement. Port records show that May was the seventh record-breaking month for TEU volume since July 2013. Until that point, the previous record had stood since October 2007, before the start of the global recession. Truck-container volume in May grew by 21.5 percent, year over year, while rail containers edged up 2.5 percent.

Maersk Line has purchased & is reflagging 8 newer and larger containerships to upgrade services provided to its U.S. military, government and commercial customers. MLL's investment of approximately half a billion dollars in eight vessels will improve the quality of service to the Middle East and Mediterranean Sea from the U.S. East Coast. Since 2000, MLL has invested over $1.75 billion dollars to modernize its fleet in support of the U.S. government and military. The vessels are about 10 years younger than the outgoing ships, offering improved fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

Maersk Line will switch to low-sulfur fuel while at berth for all of its containerships calling the Port of Virginia starting in February. This fuel switch program will help improve air quality in the greater Hampton Roads area by significantly reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Maersk Line is the lead shipping line to participate in the fuel switch program sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ), as well as the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) and its guests celebrated the naming of its fourth U.S. flag tanker, the MAERSK PEARY, last Friday at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk. The freshly painted, 591-foot ship sat pier-side in downtown Norfolk and was adorned with red, white and blue bunting as distinguished guests, customers, partners, and colleagues welcomed the vessel into MLL’s U.S. flag fleet. The vessel is ice-classed and is aptly named after Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, famous for his excursions to the North Pole.

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has announced a realignment of its Senior Management Team structure to serve clients and grow its position in target markets. William J. (Bill) Kenwell will assume the title of Senior Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer with responsibility for leading commercial activities and relationships with key government agencies. Reporting to Kenwell will be MLL’s U.S.-flag Liner and Integrated Defense Logistics business units as well as all Marketing and Proposal activities. Kenwell will report to MLL’s President and Chief Executive Officer, John Reinhart. All of MLL’s maritime-related business units will transfer reporting to Steve Carmel, Senior Vice President, Maritime Services.
