Hawaii Regional Maintenance Center Completes Emergent Repair on USS Makin Island (LHD 8)

U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121) departed from HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss. on Friday. The new warship will be commissioned next month in Charleston, S.C., before sailing to its homeport at Hawaii’s Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.Frank E. Petersen Jr. is the 33rd destroyer Ingalls has built for the U.S. Navy, with five more currently under construction at Ingalls, including Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123), Jack H. US Navy Calls In Reservists to Help Clear Ship Maintenance Backlog

The U.S. Navy is mobilizing 1,629 Reservists to support aircraft carrier and submarine maintenance at its four public shipyards starting in July. This mobilization will help reduce the maintenance backlog that has developed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.In March, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) authorized weather and safety leave for shipyard personnel who fell under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) "high risk" category for extreme complications tied to the COVID-19 virus.

$12.5m Awarded for Drydock Repairs in Hawaii

GSI Pacific Inc.,* Honolulu, Hawaii, is awarded $12,481,550 for a firm-fixed-price task order (N6247818F4183) under a previously awarded multiple award construction contract (N62478-16-D-4015) to overhaul a dry dock caisson and provide dock repairs at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The work to be performed provides for 10-year ultrasonic testing of the entire caisson in accordance with Military Standard 1625D including, but not limited to, plating of the entire hull, top deck (weather deck), machinery deck, internal strength decks, bulkheads including breast hooks, ballast tank and machinery deck internal structural members such as stiffeners, truss frame members and sea chests/ballast piping seaward of the first closure valve.

US Navy Aids Stranded Iranian Vessel

A U.S. Navy warship came to the aid of an Iranian vessel stranded in rough waters in the Arabian Sea. A helicopter crew conducting routine flight operations from Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88) spotted the dhow approximately 60 nautical miles from land. “The distressed mariners were seen waving their hands over their head in an effort to get the attention of our pilots,” said Cmdr. US Navy to Commission John Finn Today

The Navy will commission its newest guided-missile destroyer, the future USS John Finn (DDG 113), during a 10 a.m. HAST ceremony Saturday, July 15, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The new destroyer honors Chief Aviation Ordnanceman John Finn, who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the first attack by Japanese airplanes at Pearl Harbor. While under heavy machine gun fire, Finn manned a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on an instruction stand in a completely exposed section of the parking ramp. Wounded multiple times, he had to be convinced to leave his post. After receiving first aid treatment, he overcame the effects of his injuries and returned to the squadron area to supervise the rearming of returning planes.

Sterett-Dewey Surface Action Group in Hawaii

Ships and units from the Sterett-Dewey Surface Action Group (Sterett-Dewey SAG) arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, April 11, the first stop of the group's Western Pacific deployment. The command staff of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 31 and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Sterett (DDG 104) and USS Dewey (DDG 105), along with embarked helicopter detachments from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 49 and HSM 78, deployed from Naval Base San Diego March 31. During the transit to Hawaii, the Sterett-Dewey SAG completed a series of training and certification exercises tailored to meet projected expectations of Western Pacific operations. The group additionally worked with Carrier Strike Group 11 in a series of communications exercises.

Australia, US Alliance on Display for Talisman Sabre

More than 33,000 U.S. and Australian personnel will participate in the biennial military training exercise Talisman Sabre 2015 in Australia July 4-19. Talisman Sabre, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Pacific Command and Australian Defence Force Headquarters Joint Operations Command, will incorporate U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force and the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army, and Royal Australian Air Force as well as other government agencies from each country. Featuring 21 ships, including the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) and more than 200 aircraft and three submarines, this sixth iteration of the exercise will focus on joint training of a combined task force of U.S.

Adm. Swift Takes Command of Pacific Fleet

Adm. Scott H. Swift returned to his home state and relieved Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr. as commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during a change of command ceremony on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, May 27. "The magnitude of this moment is not lost on me, especially given my personal and professional history here in Hawaii and the Pacific," said Swift, who became the 35th commander since the Pacific Fleet moved to Hawaii in 1941. "No one is selected for responsibility such as that of the Pacific Fleet based on personal merit or performance alone. Swift also spoke of his fond connection to Hawaii, where he was born when his father was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Harris said Swift's Pacific ties made him the perfect officer to relieve him.

Navy Awards Contract for Passenger Terminal Renovation in Hawaii

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii awarded a $20.5 million firm-fixed-price task order under a multiple award construction contract April 27 to Insight Pacific LLC, a small business in Anaheim, Calif. The work to be performed is for repairs of the existing two-story Air Mobility Command Passenger Terminal (AMC) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) and renovations to the in-bound and out-bound passenger processing so that it will comply with current codes, requirements and accessibility standards. "This project not only increases the efficiency of a facility which serves 100,000 passengers a year; but will also improve the quality of life of everyone there," said NAVFAC Hawaii's Commanding Officer Capt. Dean Tufts.

Navy Partnerships Matter: RIMPAC in Action

The future is maritime partnerships maintains the US Navy in a recent news release. The world’s navies must be able to come together quickly to work on common interests and things that are important worldwide. The Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2014 (RIMPAC 14) is put forward as an example of that endeavor. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans.

RIMPAC, the world’s largest international maritime exercise consisting of 20 plus nations and hundreds of aircraft, ships and submarines began yesterday in and around the Hawaiian Islands. The exercise will provide a unique training opportunity for fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans. RIMPAC 2014 is the 24th such exercise since 1971 and for the first time will include Brunei and China.

Latest DofD Navy Contracts

US Department of Defense has awarded the following Navy contracts for worldwide logistic services, and secondly for port operations at Joint Base Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Hawaii. CACI, Inc.-Federal, Chantilly, Va., is being awarded $14,210,271 for two modifications under a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00033-08-D-6506) with firm-fixed-price task orders for worldwide logistics services supporting Military Sealift Command’s Logistics directorate. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., (75 percent); Chantilly, Va., (10 percent); San Diego, Calif., (5 percent); Guam, (5 percent) and other overseas locations (5 percent), and is expected to be completed by October 2014.

USS Santa Fe Departs for Western Pacific Deployment

Family and friends bid farewell to the crew on the submarine piers at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as the Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe (SSN 763) departed July 29, for a deployment to the Western Pacific region. Santa Fe's Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Timothy Poe said the submarine and her crew are excited to get underway to the Western Pacific and train on numerous mission areas as well as participate in theater security cooperation engagements. NAVFAC Announces 2012 Engineers of the Year

The 2012 Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) military and civilian Engineers of the Year award was announced Feb. 2 by NAVFAC Commander Rear Admiral Christopher J. Mossey. Senior Civil Engineer Bruce Seamans at NAVFAC Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. was selected as the civilian Engineer of the Year, and Lt. Christopher Casne, Facilities Engineering Acquisition Division (FEAD) team leader at NAVFAC Hawaii in Pearl Harbor, was selected as the military Engineer of the Year. “These two civil engineers represent the best of the Navy,” said NAVFAC Chief Engineer and Director of Capital Improvements Joseph Gott. Seamans served as the chief engineer for the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and Regional Command South from August 2010 to July 2011.
