MarineNews spoke with Jim Stark, Executive Director of the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association (GICA) about his background in the industry, current projects on the canal, issues facing GICA’s nearly 250 members and his goals for the organization. Can you describe your background and how you came to be Executive Director for GICA? I spent 28 years in the Coast Guard. I’m a commissioned officer and have served all over the country including a considerable amount of time on the Gulf Coast.
Coast Guard Working to Reopen Ports
The Coast Guard, as part of a Joint Hurricane Team (JHT), is working to reopen the and Pascagoula Ship Channels to deep-draft traffic. Currently, the of is open to vessel traffic with a draft of 35 feet or less, but the is closed. The is open to all traffic with a draft of 12 feet or less, but Horn Island Channel remains closed. A recovery plan has been produced with the goal of reopening the channels within the next 24 hours, possibly late Wednesday afternoon. The JHT is made up of representatives from the maritime industry, and Pascagoula Port Authorities, and state and federal officials, including the Coast Guard, Army Corp of Engineers, and NOAA.
