Winners of WFSA Ferry Design Contest Announced

Today the results of the World Ferry Safety Association international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry were announced. The goal of the design competition is to elicit new approaches for ferry design in the developing world as well as to encourage designers to enter this arena, for which there is a need and an emerging market. An announcement of the winners, chosen by an esteemed team of judges (see below), and a recognition of all participants, will take place at the Annual Meeting of Interferry, in Malta, on October 7. NSRP Shipbuilding Workshop

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) held its second “Shipbuilding Opportunities in Marine Highways” workshop at Advanced Technology Institute on October 21-23, 2008. Funded by the Navy and industry through NSRP, the workshop was planned and facilitated by a team led by Bender Shipbuilding & Repair of Mobile, AL. A principal workshop goal was to find ways to decrease ship construction costs by accelerating the shipbuilding opportunities associated with potential Marine Highway operations. Marine Highway operations are an alternative form of transportation that utilizes inland and coastal waterways to move commercial freight between domestic ports in lieu of road or rail. Head of Navy Strategic Mobility to Headline IMPACT 2006

The U.S. Navy¡¦s highest-ranking civilian and head of the Strategic Mobility and Combat Logistics Division will highlight a day devoted to the latest maritime innovations on the RMS Queen Mary on November 16 in Long Beach, California. Keynote speaker Jonathan Kaskin will discuss the Navy¡¦s technology needs for high-speed sealift at IMPACT 2006, a conference presented by the Center for the Commercial Deployment of Transportation Technologies (CCDoTT) and the Office of Naval Research. Ć’nCCDoTT will announce the fruits of ten years of advanced research focused on high-speed sealift, a complex multi-technology project combining the Department of Defense needs for delivering both troops and materiel to farflung destinations at ever-faster speeds.
