Kenya Hosts National Maritime Transport Policy Training

The National Maritime Transport Policy concept is being promoted by International Maritime Organization (IMO)  as a good governance practice to guide planning, decision making and legislation in the maritime sector. It can also be a key driver for a country's sustainable development, particularly when it comes to the “blue economy”. Officials in Kenya are participating in a workshop in Kilifi, Kenya (9-11 May), to gain knowledge and understanding of the development and content of a National Maritime Transport Policy. The workshop aims to highlights the involvement of the different stakeholders that are involved in the maritime sector.

Policy Planning Lessons for Maritime Students

Students from the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta are being introduced to key policy planning issues as part of International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s on-going work to support the future leaders of the maritime world (15-16 February). The event focused on the National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP) formulation, which is being promoted by IMO as a good governance practice to guide planning, decision making and legislation in the maritime sector, and a key driver for a country's sustainable development. IMO has been providing training to its interested Member States on developing, adopting and updating NMTPs.

Who Certifies Ships?

Under  International Maritime Organization (IMO)  treaties, ships can be surveyed and certified either by officers of the relevant flag State, or by Recognized Organizations (ROs) acting on behalf of them. As part of this process, countries delegating surveys and certification to ROs need to recognize, authorize and monitor these Organizations, which is the subject of a regional IMO workshop (Regional Workshop on Assessing, Authorizing and Monitoring Recognized Organizations) taking place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (31 October – 2 November). The event is assisting participants from Arab and Mediterranean States to meet their responsibilities under IMO’s RO Code, which entered into force in January 2015.

Maritime Policy for Good Governance

The latest in a series of workshops around the world to provide training in the development, adoption and updating of a National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP) has been held in Bangkok, Thailand (9-11 October). The event highlighted the importance of a national maritime transport policy as a good mechanism for improved maritime governance in a sustainable manner. The Marine Department of Thailand hosted the workshop, which was facilitated by Jonathan Pace and Josephine Uranza from International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Professor Max Mejia and Associate Professor George Theocharidis from the World Maritime University (WMU). Norad - IMO Partnerships to Protect Marine Environment

International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s collaboration with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) to deliver technical cooperation activities was in the spotlight in Oslo this week (May 30-31). In addition to the annual IMO-Norad projects review meeting, IMO presented the Organization and its technical cooperation programme to senior officials from Norwegian ministries and NGOs (Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, Ministry of Climate and Environment, and WWF Norway), highlighting in particular the IMO-Norad East Asia Project, which helped build capacity to implement IMO environment-protection conventions in six participating countries – with a view to identifying further cooperation opportunities.

Future Maritime Leaders Practice Policy Planning

Maritime law students in Malta have been introduced to key issues in maritime transport policy making in a seminar at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta (7-9 February). The event focused on the National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP) concept, which is being promoted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a good governance practice to guide planning, decision making and legislation in the maritime sector. IMO recently embarked on an initiative to provide training to interested IMO Member States in the development, adoption and updating of NMTPs, which are seen as key to a coordinated and integrated approach to maritime transport.

Promoting National Maritime Transport Policy in Saint Lucia

A national workshop in Saint Lucia has brought together participants from various Government bodies and other stakeholders to discuss the development of a national maritime transport policy. The workshop is aimed at highlighting the promotion and development of such a policy as a good governance practice to guide planning, decision making and relevant legislative action. SafeMed ll BWT Training Course Held in Malta

Methods of reducing environmental risks of invasive alien species transferred through ships’ ballast water in the Mediterranean Sea were discussed during a SafeMed II Project training course held in Malta. Training and instruction emphasised the effective implementation of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention). Although ballast water enhances the safety and efficiency of shipping operations, when not properly managed, this widespread maritime practice leads to risks of displacing marine species all over the world.
