Port of LA's TracPac RMG Cranes to be Integrated by Kalmar

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a contract for the integration of the controls for the new rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes at the intermodal yard of TraPac Inc's terminal at the Port of Los Angeles. Kalmar explain that the RMGs will be supplied to TraPac by PACECO with the Kalmar Terminal Logistic System (TLS) ensuring they are integrated in the automated operations. TLS is part of the Kalmar SmartPort equipment automation portfolio. The intermodal yard is a substantial part of the terminal, with 30 percent of the TEUs shipped inland by rail.

Cargotec Ship-to-Shore Crane Orders

Cargotec has received two significant Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) crane orders for customers in Mexico and Guadeloupe. Delivery of the crane to Port Autonome de la Guadeloupe in Guadeloupe and the crane for Pinfra’s subsidiary, Infrastructura Portuaria Mexicana in Altamira, Mexico are scheduled for the last quarter 2010. Infrastructura Portuaria Mexicana is preparing to better serve its clients with the expected revival in the global economy by increasing its capacity by purchasing newer and more efficient equipment in Altamira terminal with the addition of the new Kalmar STS crane. The crane has an outreach of 160.7 ft, 62.3 ft backreach and 121.4 ft hoisting height.

Kalmar Strengthens STS Offerings

Cargotec’s Kalmar business area is strengthening its global presence in the ship to shore (STS) cranes market by commencing STS production and engineering in Asia. Until now, Kalmar’s STS cranes have only been offered to the European market. Jorma Tirkkonen, President, Kalmar Container Crane System Division, Cargotec said “Our customers have asked us to consider delivering STS cranes to terminals outside Europe. We decided that now it is a good time to target increased volumes by starting to offer our STS cranes in all continents. The decision supports our strategy of growing our business and presence in the Asia Pacific region and the Americas, where we also have a strong local service network for our customers.
