Joseph Angelo Awarded Global Maritime Prize

The prestigious International Maritime Prize for 2018 has been presented to Joseph J. Angelo, a former United States Coast Guard (USCG) and International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) senior executive who participated in International Maritime Organization (IMO) meetings for many years, providing leadership on a number of key regulatory developments.IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim presented the prize on Monday (25 November) at the annual IMO Awards ceremony. Lim outlined Angelo's long commitment to IMO and his reputation as a technical expert, diplomat and problem solver - who earned the nickname, "IMO‑Joe".

Industry frets about the coming deadline. Shipping desperately wants to be ready, but will global shore-based infrastructure and refining capacity match the demand that is sure to come? And … are regulators listening to industry’s concerns? In early June, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a public workshop in Washington to help the agencies prepare for the January 1, 2020 deadline for worldwide implementation of very low sulfur marine fuel that meets the new 0.50% sulfur cap as set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

INTERTANKO Nominates Angelo Managing Director

INTERTANKO’s Council will be invited at its October meeting in Singapore to appoint Joseph Angelo, Deputy MD, to succeed Peter Swift as Managing Director on his retirement on 31 December, 2010. In addition, Katharina (Kathi) Stanzel has been appointed Deputy MD. Lloyd’s Register Admitted to USCG’s Alternate Compliance Program

Lloyd’s Register has been authorized to participate in the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) Alternate Compliance Program (ACP), which enables it to act as a recognised organisation (RO) for US-flagged vessels, capable of verifying compliance with United States design and inspection requirements and issuing statutory certificates. David Moorhouse, Executive Chairman of Lloyd’s Register and RADM Thomas Gilmour, Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Environmental Protection, USCG, today signed the agreement at Lloyd’s Register’s London Office. The technical annex to the agreement was signed by Joseph Angelo, Director of Standards, USCG and Alan Gavin, Marine Director, Lloyd’s Register.

IBIA Delegates Warned of Costs of Unfeasible Distillates Switch

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) was told at its annual convention in Montreal this month that a new report estimates that it would cost $67b over the next five years to implement a wholesale switch from traditional bunker fuels to distillates only for the world merchant fleet. The distillates-only option was also described as “unfeasible”, due to lack of sufficient refining capacity.
