Metcalf to Succeed Cox at CSA Helm

Kathy J. Metcalf will assume the role of president and CEO of the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA), succeeding Joseph J. Cox, who will retire on May 31, 2015, though will continue to assist the organization on various issues in an advisory capacity. Captain Bruce Fernie, chairman of the CSA board, said“[Metcalf] has been with CSA for 17+ years and brings a solid background of seagoing service and shore responsibilities with shipping companies that will continue to serve us well.” Metcalf is currently CSA’s director of marine affairs.

Environmental Awards Recognize 84 Foss Vessels

With a combined 840 years without an environmental incident, 84 Foss Maritime and subsidiary companies' tugs and tank barges have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental safety records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the 2014 Environmental Achievement Awards honoring the Seattle company's work on November 13 in Washington, D.C. Foss and its sister companies have seen an average of 10 years without an environmental incident, with 12 vessels achieving 20-plus years of environmental excellence, including the Stellar Wind and the Arthur Foss.

The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2014 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) were presented to Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF); Joseph J. Cox, President/CEO, Chamber of Shipping of America; and Frederick J. Harris, President of General Dynamics NASSCO and Bath Iron Works, an American shipbuilder. The maritime industry's most prestigious awards were presented at a gala industry dinner and dance held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, New York City, on November 7, 2014.

Cape Ray to be Honored at USS AOTOS Event

The MV Cape Ray, a Keystone-managed Ready Reserve Force containership that worked in the Mediterranean Sea for the U.S. Government neutralizing chemical material from Syria, will receive a special recognition on November 7 at the United Seamen's Service Admiral of the Ocean Sea (USS AOTOS) event. Military and civilian specialists spent some 10 months completing the mission of neutralizing more than 600 tons or 80 percent of Syria's stockpile. The effluents were then dropped off at Finland and Germany for final disposal.

The United Seamen's Service (USS) informs that 2014 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) will be presented to Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF); Joseph J. CSA Honors 80 Foss Vessels for Environmental Excellence

The Arthur Foss, the Justine Foss and many other Foss Maritime vessels have been free of environmental mishaps for the past 20 years. In fact, 80 tugs and barges owned by the Seattle-based company, which has one of the nation's largest coastal tug and barge fleet, are being recognized this year by a major maritime organization for their outstanding environmental safety records. Crowley Awarded 100 CSA Environmental Certificates

During the tenth-annual Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) awards ceremony held in Washington, D.C., this week, Crowley Maritime Corporation was awarded 100 Certificates of Environmental Achievement for 2013 – more than any other company in the running. The certificates were awarded to Crowley-owned and operated vessels for having worked at least two consecutive years without an environmental incident. Additionally, Crowley was also presented with a membership award in recognition of five years of support to the CSA.

Europort Captures Global Industry Mood

Two weeks before the doors open at Europort, Rotterdam, organizer Ahoy is finalizing arrangements for the event that promises to provide a benchmark for the “state of the global maritime and offshore industry” in late 2013. Alongside attendees at its Advanced Technology Conferences industry seminars and networking opportunities, over 1,000 exhibitors will be present at Europort 2013, which takes place November 5-8 at Ahoy Rotterdam. This year, companies from 39 countries will participate, with international organizations accounting for 45% of all exhibitors. “Technical innovators will populate all 10 of the Ahoy exhibition halls”, said Raymond Siliakus, Europort Exhibition Manager.

Foss Awarded Jones F. Devlin Safety Awards

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) recognized the Foss family of companies for their commitment to safety by granting Jones F. Devlin Awards to 81 of their tugs and manned barges. Eight-one Foss vessels were recognized at the CSA's Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 23, 2013. Altogether, the Foss vessels achieved the equivalent of 463 years without a lost-time injury. Three levels of achievement are recognized by CSA: A basic two-year award; a three-year award; and a four-year award.

Vessels Have Gone Two Years or Longer Without Environmental Incidents, Winning Chamber of Shipping Honor. Sixty-one tugs and tank barges owned by Foss Maritime Company have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental safety records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the awards honoring the Seattle, WA-based Foss' environmental achievements on November 13, 2012 in Washington, D.C. Altogether, the 61 Foss vessels recognized by CSA have gone a combined 543 years without an environmental incident.

Conference Pushes Ratification of MLC, 2006

Panelists say U.S. may be at competitive disadvantage by not adopting “MLC, 2006”. Panelists at a major symposium on an international maritime agreement today said the U.S. may be at a competitive economic disadvantage if it doesn’t approve what more than 30 other shipping nations have adopted. The symposium, hosted by the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey, the Charleston School of Law and its Charleston Maritime Law Institute, focused discussion on the Maritime Labor Convention, 2006, also known as “MLC, 2006.”  The most significant development in seafarers’ rights law in history, it provides a comprehensive statement of seafarers’ working conditions that balance tradition and modern shipping realities.

Sixty vessels owned by the Seattle-based Foss Maritime Company are being recognized by a major maritime organization for their standout environmental records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the awards honoring Foss' environmental achievements Thursday, November 17 in Washington, D.C. "Safety and the environment are the first things that our customers bring up when we talk with them," said Gary Faber, Foss's president and COO. "To be honored by the Chamber of Shipping for our environmental record is something that underscores all our efforts at Foss. Fifty-Nine Foss Vessels Honored for Environmental Excellence

For 18 years, the Drew Foss, a tugboat operated by the Foss Maritime Company, has been free of environmental mishap. So have the Arthur Foss, the Justine Foss and a dozen other Foss vessels. In fact, 59 vessels owned by the Seattle-based Foss are being recognized by a major maritime organization for their standout environmental safety records. Altogether, the Foss vessels feted by CSA have gone a combined 551 years without an environmental incident. "When we talk with our customers, their first concern is safety and the environment," said Gary Faber, the company's president and COO.

Crowley Earns Environmental Awards

Crowley Maritime Corporation was recently honored at a Chamber Shipping of America awards ceremony with Environmental Achievement Awards for 2008. The awards recognized the environmental excellence of 57 Crowley owned or managed vessels based on having operated at least two years without any environmental incidents. The vessels operated a combined total of 382 years of service without incident. Three vessels - tugboats Point Barrow and Point Thompson, along with the tanker Blue Ridge - have each operated 11 years without an incident.

Ballast Water Management Hearing Held

On March 25, the Subcommittees on Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation and on Water Resources & Environment of the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure conducted a joint hearing on Ballast Water Management. The purpose of the hearing was to examine the international ballast water standards recently agreed to by the IMO and to review reauthorization of the National Invasive Species Act (NISA). RADM Thomas Gilmour, USCG, Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection, testified that the new international convention sets reasonable standards, while allowing individual port states to establish more stringent requirements. Harbor Services Fund Under Attack

The Administration's proposed tax to pay for harbor dredging is not a viable or equitable solution to funding navigation channel maintenance at the nation's ports, says the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). AAPA and others testified at a House Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee Hearing on the Administration's Harbor Services Fund (HSF) proposal, H. R. 1947. The plan creates a new tax on vessels to replace the Harbor Maintenance Tax, the export-tax portion of which was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1998.
