Russia Slams Reports of Trawler Sinking on Striking Submarine

The Russian Defense Ministry has rejected the media reports that the Russian trawler tragedy in the Sea of Okhotsk that claimed 56 lives was due to a collision with a submarine, informs the state news agency TASS. Russian media quoted the spokesman for the Russian Navy, Gen. "All the information spread by some mass media and social networks that the cause of the shipwreck in the Sea of Okhotsk of a big autonomy trawler Dalniy Vostok could have been a collision with a Russian submarine is false," Konashenkov said. The 'Dalniy Vostok' freezer trawler capsized in the Sea of Okhotsk 330 km west of Krutogorovsky settlement in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula and 250 km south of the city of Magadan on Thursday.

56 Dead as Russian trawler Sinks

Trawler with 132 crew sinks in freezing waters; rescue operation seeks missing crew. MOSCOW, April 2 (Reuters) - A Russian trawler sank in icy seas off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Thursday, killing at least 56 of the 132 crew, the emergencies ministry said on Thursday. Sixty-three people were rescued but 13 were still unaccounted for, hours after the Dalniy Vostok fishing vessel sank in the Sea of Okhotsk so quickly that its captain, who drowned, did not manage to send a distress signal. It was not immediately clear why the 26-year-old ship had sunk but a local official said the crew may have violated safety rules by overloading it, affecting its balance. Russia has a long history of road, air and sea disasters, many caused by negligence or violation of safety regulations.

Russian Trawler Sinks with 54 Dead

At least 54 people died when a Russian trawler sank off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East, media reports say. The Dalniy Vostok sank in the Sea of Okhotsk, 330 km (205 miles) west of Krutogorovsky settlement in the Kamchatka region and 250 km south of the city of Magadan. "Drifting ice may have torn a hole in the vessel," the BBC reported, citing Russian emergency services. “The ship did not send a distress signal,” the source said. The trawler was a Russian vessel with a crew consisting of 78 Russians and 54 others from Myanmar, Ukraine, Lithuania and Vanuatu. Rescuers have picked up 54 bodies and rescued 63 people, a source in the emergency services told the agency. Another 15 people are listed as missing. Though Russia is one of the world’s largest producers of oil and gas, it is embarking on an ambitious and somewhat imaginative programme of building floating nuclear power stations, writes Tony Roulstone, Lecturer in Nuclear Energy at the University of Cambridge, online at 'The Conversation'. These reactors, mounted on huge, 140m by 30m barges, are being built in the Baltic shipyard in St Petersburg and will be floated through the Norwegian and Barents Seas to where they will generate heat and electrical power in the Arctic.

Russian Naval Base Uses Nuclear Subs For Electricity

Frequent power cuts on the remote Kamchatka peninsula have forced Russia's military to fire up reactors on nuclear submarines to provide electricity to bases there, an admiral said. Admiral Valery Drogin told the official Rossiiskaya Gazeta government newspaper that even the strategic nuclear missile bases on the Pacific Ocean peninsula were now being powered by reactors on board the submarines. Power stations in Russia's Far East suffer from chronic fuel shortages because of the high cost of delivery and the heavy indebtedness of local companies.

Russian Sub Rescue

According to a CNN report a rescue vessel is attempting to drag a disabled mini-submarine with seven sailors onboard to shallower waters off Russia's Pacific coast. Accoding to the CNN report, Interfax news agency quoted Adm. Victor Federov, the commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet, as saying the vessel was trying to raise the submarine as it was being towed in about 190 meters (600 feet) of water. However, although Federov said some sort of object was secured and was being towed, it was unclear if it was the sub. Underwater cameras are being placed to identify the object. The situation started Thursday when the AS-28 mini-submarine became entangled in a fishing net during a military exercise off the Kamchatka peninsula.
