DNV, SDTR Marine to Explore CCS for Kamsarmax Bulker

Classification society DNV has entered into a joint development project (JDP) with Singapore-based shipping company SDTR Marine to cooperate on a carbon capture and storage (CCS) feasibility study for the latter’s 85,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier.As part of the JDP, DNV and SDTR Marine will collaborate on a techno-economic analysis of CCS implementation aboard the bulk carriers. Utilizing DNV's FuelPath, the study aims to evaluate the economic viability of different fuel and technology approaches under various fuel and CO2 price scenarios.

Wind-assisted Propulsion for World's Largest Ore Carrier

Brazilian mining firm Vale will install five Rotor Sails from Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd (“Anemoi”), a supplier of wind-assisted propulsion technology for commercial vessels, onboard a 400,000 dwt Valemax, the world’s largest ore carrier. The vessel is owned by Omani shipowner, Asyad.Five 35-meter-tall, 5-meter-diameter cylindrical sails will be installed on the Sohar Max VLOC. The Rotor Sails will be installed on Anemoi’s folding deployment system, whereby the sails can be folded from vertical to mitigate impact on air draft and cargo handling operations.

Kamsarmax Rotor Sails Install Expected to Deliver 10% Fuel Savings

The installation of rotor sails on board a 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier is expected to generate a 10% reduction in fuel burn and emissions.The TR Lady was retrofitted with three 5×24m rotor sails from Anemoi Marine Technologies at China's Chengxi Shipyard in June 2023. Bahri Takes First of Four New Bulk Carriers

Saudi Arabian ship owner Bahri said it has taken delivery of the new Kamsarmax bulk carrier Sara, built by Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding (HVS), a subsidiary of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. (HMD).The 81,000 dwt vessel is the first in a series of four ordered by Bahri Dry Bulk from South Korea’s HMD in August 2017. The three remaining vessels are all scheduled to be delivered this year.The new ship will transport basic grains, such as wheat, barley, corn and other dry-bulk cargoes, for import into Saudi Arabia.The 229-meter newbuild increases the Bahri’s fleet of dry-bulk carriers to six ships.

Klaveness' CLEANBU Switch from Wet to Dry Cargo

Norway-based shipowner Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has undertaken a wet-dry cargo switch, marking a first for one of its CLEANBU combination carriers.The vessel transported a full cargo of petroleum products (CPP) from India to Argentina, said the global owner and operator of combination carriers.After discharging the CPP, she completed the cleaning and conversion from tanker mode to dry bulk mode, loaded a grain cargo and is now enroute back to Asia. Euroseas Bags TC for Newbuilding Kamsarmax M/V Ekaterini

Euroseas, an owner and operator of drybulk and container carrier vessels and provider of seaborne transportation for drybulk and containerized cargoes, announced that a subsidiary of the Company has entered into a time charter contract for its newbuilding vessel, M/V Ekaterini, an 82,000 dwt, 2018 built Kamsarmax bulk carrier. Specifically, M/V Ekaterini, which is scheduled to be delivered to the Company from the shipyard on May 7, 2018, has been chartered to a highly reputable European charterer for about two years at a gross daily rate of $13,000. The charter will commence upon delivery of the vessel and is expected to contribute approximately $9.0 million of net revenues to the Company during the contract period.

Scorpio Bulkers Gets Loan for Kamsarmax

Monaco-based international shipping company Scorpio Bulkers said it has received a commitment for a loan facility of up to $12.75 million from a leading European financial institution to finance the Company’s Kamsarmax bulk carrier. The bulker will be delivered from Jiangsu New Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China in the third quarter of 2018. The loan facility has a final maturity date of five years from delivery and bears interest at LIBOR plus a margin of 2.40% per annum. The terms and conditions are similar to those set forth in the Company's existing credit facilities. The loan facility is subject to customary conditions precedent and the execution of definitive documentation. Scorpio Bulkers is a provider of marine transportation of dry bulk commodities.

Scorpio Bulkers Acquires Four Vessels

Scorpio Bulkers, announced that it has entered into two separate agreements with unaffiliated third parties to acquire three Ultramax dry bulk vessels and one Kamsarmax dry bulk vessel. The deal was for an aggregate of $90 million, of which $77.1 million is payable in cash and the remaining consideration is in the form of approximately 1.592 million common shares of the Company to be issued to one of the sellers. All of the Ultramax vessels were built at Chengxi Shipyard Co Ltd in China, of which two were delivered in 2014 and one was delivered in 2015. The Kamsarmax bulk carrier is a resale unit whose construction will be supervised by the Company and which will be delivered from Jiangsu New Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co Ltd in China in the second quarter of 2018.

LNG-Fueled Vessels Go Big with 'Project Forward'

ABS, a provider of classification services to the global marine and offshore industries, has teamed up with partners Arista Shipping, Deltamarin, GTT and Wärtsilä in the “Project Forward” joint development project (JDP) to develop a dry bulk carrier concept that employs LNG as fuel. The goal is to develop a Kamsarmax bulk carrier design to be the first of this type suitable for worldwide services powered by LNG in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards, NOx Tier III and Marpol Annex VI SOx emission levels.

Scorpio Cancels Kamsarmax Newbuilding Contract

Scorpio Bulkers has continued to cull its fleet expansion with the cancellation of a newbuilding contract for a kamsarmax bulk carrier. US-listed bulker owner set to save $19.3m final installment costs after walking away from order. The vessel had been scheduled for delivery in April 2016. The shipowner informed it had reached agreement with as shipyard to cancel a kamsarmax newbuilding, which had been due for delivery this month. Explosion in Cargo Carrier in Brazil

A kamsarmax bulk carrier owned by Greece’s Transmed Shipping was hit by an explosion in one of its cargo holds while anchored at Paranagua Port in Brazil. The Paranaguá Port Authority says it received a report at about 3 p.m. The explosion may have been caused by gas generated by the maize kept being under high temperature, combined with recent fumigation gas, or by malpractice of the crew. The 235 meters long vessel remained under observation for 24 hours and was surveyed by technicians regarding the sea worthiness. The environmental authorities and the Navy have been informed of the incident and Appa continued to support the vessel. The 2013-built Akaki was loaded with corn and prepared to sail to Vietnam when the explosion occurred.

A mini order boom fueled by gas, “green-tech”, tankers and new rules is underway in shipbuilding. It won’t fill all yards, but changes like the July 2015 cap on sulfur emissions garner retrofit and rush orders. Even China’s Directive 55 obliges its mixed bag of yards to comply. Threatening to plug this trickle of business is the potential for backlash against rule makers, when Class is observed “engaging” some yards on designs while others must merely learn the new requirements.

LNG-fueled Bulker Design Approved by DNV GL

DNV GL has presented Oshima Shipbuilding Company with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for a LNG-fuelled Kamsarmax bulk carrier at the Nor-Shipping exhibition in Oslo today. The new design has been found to comply with DNV GL class rules and all current and upcoming regulations, including the new emission control regulations and the draft IGF Code for fuel with a low flashpoint. As regulations on harmful ship emissions such as sulphur become stricter, reducing SOx, NOx, CO2 and particulate matter is at the top of the agenda for many players in the maritime industry.

Star Bulk Carriers Corp has added M/V Star Jennifer (ex "Ore Hansa), a 82,290 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier, built in 2006, to its fleet. The Company completed the acquisition of 34 vessels from Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd under an "en bloc" transaction announced on August 19, 2014. Pursuant to the completion of the Excel Vessel Fleet acquisition, the Company has currently 162,684,541 shares of common stock outstanding. OSM Maritime Awarded Three Ship Management Contracts

Laurel Ace is a new bulk carrier, built in 2013 at the I-S shipyard in Japan. The vessel was successfully taken over in Japan on the 3rd of July by Capt. Song (OSM Hong Kong), and will sail with Chinese crew. This ship has a length of 161 meters, a breadth of 27 meters, gross tonnage of 17,019 tons and a deadweight of 28,397 MT. Secondly, OSM Maritime Group has been awarded the ship management of the DP-2 Dive Support Vessel Adessa Ocean King, and the ship will be operated by the OSM office in Singapore. The vessel was built in 1989, has a length of 90 meters and the breadth is 20 meters.

Biggest Ship Ever Built in Vietnam: 'Nissaki' Named

The 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier was recently named in Vietnam's Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard (HVS). Nissaki is built for St Michael Shipping of Greece, marking a significant milestone in the development of the shipbuilding capability of Vietnam, being the biggest ship built to date in the country to Lloyd's Register class. Quintana Takes Delivery of Vessel

Quintana Maritime Limited took delivery of a Kamsarmax bulk carrier, Pascha, from Tsuneishi, a Japanese shipyard. Pascha has a carrying capacity of 82,300 deadweight tons (dwt) and is the tenth of the fourteen Kamsarmax vessels the company has agreed to acquire from Metrobulk. As previously announced, Pascha, together with four other vessels, is employed at an average daily rate of approximately $20,000 per day for 2007 under a master time charter with Bunge S.A.. Quintana Maritime has fixed the rates for all seventeen vessels it has acquired or has agreed to acquire from Metrobulk. The master charter agreement with Bunge S.A. calls for annual renewals in early November every year between floor and ceiling rates, and lasts through the end of 2010.

Quintana Maritime Takes Delivery of Sixth Kamsarmax Vessel

Quintana Maritime Limited priced its two remaining Kamsarmaxes, Iron Brooke (ex Bulk 16) and Iron Manolis (ex Bulk 17), under its master time charter with Bunge S.A. at an average daily rate of $25,000 per day for 2007. These vessels, which Quintana has agreed to acquire from Metrobulk, are expected to be delivered to Quintana ex yard between March and May 2007. Having priced these two Kamsarmaxes, Quintana Maritime has fixed the rates for all seventeen vessels it has acquired or has agreed to acquire from Metrobulk. For 2007, seven Kamsarmaxes and two Panamaxes have been fixed at an average daily rate of $23,000, five Kamsarmaxes have been fixed at an average daily rate of $20,000 and two Kamsarmaxes have been fixed at an average daily rate of $25,000.
