NYK Provides Free Transport for Ginkgo Saplings

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Group has provided support to a project being conducted by maritime volunteers in the town of Pembroke, which is south of Wales, to return ginkgo saplings linked to Admiral Togo, one of Japan’s greatest naval heroes.Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd. has provided free transport from Britain, and a ceremony for receiving the saplings was held at the Hiroshima Botanical Garden in Japan on December 24.In the 1870s, the Japanese government donated the ginkgo tree to Britain, where Togo was furthering his naval studies, and the tree was planted in the yard of his dormitory. Naming Ceremony for New LNG Carrier

On May 14, a naming ceremony was held at the Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that NYK and JERA Co. will jointly own. The ceremony was attended by Satoshi Onoda, president of JERA Co. Inc.; Tadaaki Naito, president of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Bushu Maru” by Mr. Onoda, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. No Leakage from NYK Tanker in Tokyo Bay

On May 16 (Saturday) and 17 (Sunday), a few media outlets reported that crude oil had leaked from Takamine, a tanker operated by NYK Line, while the ship was discharging at JST 9:28 p.m. on May 15 (Friday) at Keihin Kawasaki sea berth (Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture) in Tokyo Bay.  However, there are no indications that any leakage of oil occurred from this ship. The vessel has subsequently sailed safely toward its next port. NYK expresses its sincere regret to the community and all relevant persons for the concern caused by these media reports, and the company will continue its efforts to maintain safe operations on all NYK ships.

MHI Enhancing Cruise Repair & Conversion Business

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) is taking steps to strengthen its cruise ship repair and conversion business. Recently, along with swift expansion of the cruise market in Asia it has become increasingly important for cruise companies, both Japanese and foreign, to differentiate their services and enhance their responsiveness to customer needs. Against this backdrop, MHI has received orders from Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, Ltd. (MOPAS) and Nippon Charter Cruise, Ltd. (NCC) for repair and conversion work on the Nippon Maru and Fuji Maru, respectively.

Cruise Ship Repair & Conversion Orders for MHI

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) gets orders to carry out repair & conversion of the liners 'Nippon Maru' & 'Fuji Maru'. MHI has received orders from Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, Ltd. (MOPAS) and Nippon Charter Cruise, Ltd. (NCC) for repair and conversion work on the Nippon Maru and Fuji Maru, respectively. The work will be performed at MHI's Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works in Kanagawa Prefecture between mid-December and the end of January 2013. MHI Order for Ballast Water Treatment System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order from Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) for conversion and installation work of a ballast water treatment system on NYK's Auriga Leader, a pure car/truck carrier built by MHI and already in service. The work on order, to be completed by the end of June, will be performed at MHI's Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works in Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Yokohama Ship Repair & Marine Engineering Department and the "Ballast Water Treatment Project Team" are located.

MOL Technology Research Center Moves

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced plans to move the MOL Technology Research Center from its current site in Nishikojiya, Ota Ward, Tokyo, to Aso Ward in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site in Kawasaki on May 20. MOL executives on hand for the event included Senior Managing Executive Officer Yoichi Aoki, Executive Officer Kenji Yokota, and others involved in the project. All the attendees prayed for a safe conclusion to the construction work. The MOL Technology Research Center analyzes vessel fuel oils and lubricants, developing a fuel oil pretreatment device, research and development on CO2 reduction, and other R&D efforts to improve storage and transport technologies such as advanced reefer containers.

Deep-Sea Drilling Ship Delivered to Marine Agency

The deep-sea vessel Chikyu, which will be used to drill to the deepest depths ever to shed light on the mysteries beneath the planet's crust, was delivered to the marine science agency Friday, the Japan Times reported. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which built the research vessel, held a delivery ceremony at its dockyard in Nagasaki. The 210-meter, 57,087-ton ship is theoretically capable of drilling 7,000 meters below the seabed. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology plans to open the vessel to the public in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, in September after fine-tuning its equipment in August. The ship, which is equipped with a 130-meter-high drilling platform, will depart for its first drilling mission off the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori next summer.
