1943 - USS O'Bannon (DD 450) sinks the Japanese submarine RO 34 near Russell Island, Solomon Islands. 1944 - PB4Y aircraft (VB 109) sink Japanese auxiliary submarine chaser Cha 46 off Wake Island. 1946 - USS New (DD 818), named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Marine Pvt. 1st Class John D. New, is commissioned. 1946 - USS Missouri (BB 63) transports the body of the late Turkish Ambassador to the United States, Mehmet Munir Ertegun, home for burial, on a mission that was also made to influence Soviet Middle East policy.

Evergreen’s New Line from Taiwan to China

Evergreen Line's 1140-TEU Uni-Adroit set sail across the 100-mile-wide Taiwan Straits for China's northern Xingang port on December 15, 2009 opening a new era of direct ocean shipping following a ceremony at Kaohsiung harbor overseen by Taiwan's President Ma Yin-Jiu. The direct link ends a nearly 60-year suspension of such services between Taiwan and the China mainland. The new direct service was accelerated with the election and inauguration of President Ma earlier this year. The two nations signed an agreement in November to ensure the opening of trade as beneficial to both economies.

First Steel-Hull Megayacht from Taiwan

Jade Yachts Shipbuilding Corp. is set to deliver the first made-in-Taiwan steel super yacht, a milestone in the nation's shipbuilding sector. "We hope to take the shipbuilding industry in Taiwan to a higher level in terms of quantity and quality," Jade Yachts chairman Han Pi-hsiang said while scrutinizing the 86-ft. yacht Bandido during its first sea trial in Kaohsiung Harbor, according to a report on www.taipeitimes.com. Han is also the chairman of Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Co, the parent company of Jade Yachts and the nation's largest private shipbuilder. Bandido is the first yacht with a steel and aluminum hull ever made by a Taiwanese company.
