Damen Naval has selected Kongsberg Maritime Sweden to deliver controllable pitch propellers and shaft lines for the four Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates for the Netherlands and Belgium.As part of this contract, Kongsberg will supply four shipsets of its controllable pitch propeller systems and associated equipment including blades, hubcaps, hubs, and shaft lines.The four ASW frigates will replace the current Karel Doorman-class multi-purpose frigates. They will be deployed for a wide variety of tasks, with anti-submarine warfare as their main purpose.

Damen Naval has contracted MAN Energy Solutions to supply the propulsion diesel engines and the diesel generator sets for the new Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates. The order consists of eight MAN 20V28/33D STC Marine Engines and sixteen variable speed 16V175D-MEV Naval generator sets with sound enclosure and plant auxiliaries. Damen Naval, a naval shipbuilding division of the Dutch Damen Shipyards Group,  has signed a contract with the first Dutch supplier for the four new Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Frigates to be built for the Dutch and Belgian Navies. Netherlands-based RH Marine will supply the Integrated Mission Management System (IMMS), the Integrated Navigation Bridge System (INBS), and the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for each of the four frigates for the Dutch and Belgian Navies.

Damen Shipyards Galati performed the traditional keel-laying ceremony on June 2, 2021, for the Combat Support Ship (CSS) Den Helder for the Royal Netherlands Navy.The yard carried out the steel cutting for this new vessel in December last year, and following the keel-laying, all the building blocks for the actual construction of the ship in Romania are now ready. The next ceremonial milestone is the naming of the vessel, but not before the building of the ship is completed in 2023.

Damen Shipyards Den Helder (DSDH) and the Netherlands’ Defense Material Organization (DMO) procurement agency have signed a contract for the design, build and delivery of a prototype Expeditionary Survey Boat (ESB).The craft will be optimized for rapid environmental assessments and hydrographic surveys in harbors, river mouths, shallow waters, coastal areas and shipping channels.The craft will be manned by four persons; two to crew the boat and two technicians to operate the hydrographic equipment, and will be able to spend up over 60 hours continuously at sea at her survey speed of 5 knots.

The Defense Materiel Organization (DMO), part of the Dutch Ministry of Defense, has contracted Alewijnse Marine to participate in the mid-life upgrade of N.R.P. Bartolomeu Dias (F333) and N.R.P. Don Francisco de Almeida (F334). Damen Shipyards Group recently visited Adelaide to further consolidate their partnership with ASC Shipbuilding and Forgacs Marine and Defence (Forgacs) (ASC Forgacs Shipbuilding) to build twelve Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) for the Australian Navy and to explore domestic and export opportunities for both the commercial and naval markets. Roland Briene, Damen’s Area Director Asia Pacific, also highlighted two important milestones for Damen in Australia: the 5th anniversary of Damen’s Australian company, Damen Services Brisbane, and the intention to establish a second long-term service hub in support of the SEA 1180 program. Damen, as one of the three designers competing for the OPV program, is fully committed to consolidating their commitment to Australia.

The Cyclone-class patrol coastal ship USS Zephyr (PC 8), its embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) personnel and coalition forces intercepted an immense amount of contraband while on patrol conducting Operation Martillo in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of operations April 19. Zephyr, along with Dutch Karel Doorman-class multi-purpose frigate HNLMS Van Amstel, pursued and boarded a small fishing vessel, called a panga, and interdicted 750 kilograms of cocaine with a total street value of $22.5 million. "Today's success was due to the high professionalism and cohesive integration of the Zephyr crew and USCG LEDET," said Lt. Cmdr. Cameron Ingram, Zephyr's commanding officer.

Dutch company Fleet Cleaner said it has completed its first hull cleaning trial in December 2016 in the Dutch port of Den Helder, using a robot to clean the hull of HNLMS Karel Doorman, the largest vessel of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Fleet Cleaner deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to remove fouling on the vessel’s hull – both under- and above-water. In an official handover ceremony at the Den Helder Naval Base, the Royal Netherlands Navy took formal delivery of three Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid tugs. In addition to providing an increase in ship handling capacity, the new vessels are also installed with hybrid propulsion systems. This will contribute to Dutch Ministry of Defence ambitions regarding sustainable operations of the Navy. The acquisition of the three Damen tugs is part of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s ongoing fleet renewal programme. The hybrid vessels, named Noordzee, Waddenzee and Zuiderzee, can sail under diesel-direct, diesel-electric or fully-electric power. This will result in a significant increase in fuel efficiency and reduction of exhaust emissions.

The first of a series of three ASD TUGs 2810 Hybrid was navigated into the Den Helder harbor by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) on Saturday, February 20. This hybrid tug that bears the name Noordzee is almost 29 meters long and is the first standard hybrid tug supplied by Damen that the RNLN will employ. At this time, the RNLN has four conventional tugs in Den Helder at its disposal. However, these older vessels do not have sufficient power to tug new ships such as the HNLMS Karel Doorman, HNLMS Rotterdam and the HNLMS Johan de Witt.

On Wednesday, May 21 at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) Yard in Vlissingen Oost, the Netherlands, an evacuation test deployment of a Liferaft Systems Australia (LSA) 20m MES and 100-person capacity self-righting liferaft was conducted from the new Royal Netherlands Navy Joint Support Ship, HLNMS Karel Doorman. The deployment exercise involved the evacuation of 100 Royal Netherlands Navy personnel. The simulated evacuation training exercise was timed and the full 100 person complement was evacuated in less than 5 minutes.

On Saturday, March 8, Dutch Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert ceremonially named the Karel Doorman, the new Joint Support Ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ceremony took place in Vlissingen at the shipyard operated by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. With a length of 204.7 meters, the Karel Doorman is the biggest ship in the Dutch navy. The new logistical support vessel can be deployed to supply units at sea, for strategic sea transport and for logistical support from the sea (seabasing), with the ship acting as a seaborne base for implementing and supporting land operations.

Following the arrival of the Royal Netherlands Navy Joint Support Ship 'Karel Doorman' at Vlissingen, Alewijnse Marine Systems say they are now on the second stage of a four year project to install the electrical systems on this exceptionally sophisticated vessel. The contract was awarded by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding at the end of 2010 and is for the installation of the ship-wide electrical systems including those for command and control, environmental systems and power distribution and monitoring systems.

Joint Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman departed Romania and en route to its last stage of execution in The Netherlands. The vessel departed Galati on July 22, 2013, and it is expected to reach Vlissingen in three weeks. Imtech has received new orders for new and existing ships from the Royal Netherlands and Belgian navies worth over $37.6m. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (Vlissingen, the Netherlands), builder of the new logistic support ship Karel Doorman of the Royal Netherlands Navy, granted Imtech the contract for the design, production, delivery and implementation of various technological solutions on board this Joint Support Ship (JSS). Imtech also obtained orders for a technological upgrade of the Royal Netherlands Navy's supply vessel 'Hr. Ms. Amsterdam' dating from 1995 and a technological upgrade of two M-class frigates owned by the Belgian Navy.
