Caribbean Officials Search for Missing Couple After Yacht Hijacking

Police from two countries in the eastern Caribbean are investigating the possible murder of two people believed to be U.S. citizens who owned a catamaran that was hijacked by three fugitives in the waters off the island of Grenada.The yacht's alleged owners, Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry, were last seen Sunday night, when three men escaped from the custody of Grenadian authorities. First Turbine Installed at South Fork Wind Off New York

The first turbine has been installed at the South Fork Wind Farm offshore New York, developer Ørsted announced on Monday.The first of South Fork Wind’s 12 Siemens Gamesa wind turbine generators was hoisted into place by the offshore construction team at the project site 35 miles off Montauk, N.Y. Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, the Aeolus, is installing the turbines. Turbine installation involves using a crane to place the steel turbine tower onto the foundation. The nacelle and rotor are then installed on top of the tower.

Construction of New York’s First Offshore Wind Farm Set to Start as Final Approval Granted

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has granted Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the South Fork Wind, New York’s first offshore wind farm, Ørsted confirmed Thursday. Eighty-two Crowley Maritime Corporation vessels recently received the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA)’s annual Jones F. Devlin Awards in recognition of their outstanding safety records in 2017. Each year the CSA grants Devlin Award certificates to manned merchant vessels that have operated for two or more years without incurring a lost time injury (LTI), specifically highlighting the skills and dedication of the crewmembers responsible for safe vessel operations.Crowley’s 2017 Devlin Award-worthy vessels together have achieved an impressive total of 613 years of service without an LTI.

The U.S. Navy officially welcomed its newest littoral combat ship into its fleet during a December 16 commissioning ceremony in Buffalo, N.Y. Constructed at Marinette Marine Corporation, Marinette, Wisc., USS Little Rock (LCS 9) is the Navy’s fifth freedom-variant LCS. The fast, shallow draft vessel has a modular design capable of implementing a variety of mission packages as an asset to the fleet in both the shallow coastal regions as well trans-Atlantic service. The ship was commissioned next to the first USS Little Rock, a Galveston-class guided missile cruiser (CLG 4).

73 Foss Maritime Vessels Earn Environmental Awards

With a combined 877 years without an incident, 73 Foss Maritime and subsidiary companies’ tugs and tank barges have been recognized by The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) for their environmental records. CSA announced the 2017 Environmental Achievement Awards on Nov. 8, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Foss and its sister companies have 39 vessels with 10 or more years without an environmental incident, with 11 of those vessels achieving 20+ years of environmental excellence. The Edith Foss is one of the Foss Maritime vessels that have been free of environmental mishaps for more than 20 years.

CSA Honors Environmental Achievement Award Winners

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) this week announced the 2017 Environmewntal Achievement Award Winners. At a dinner ceremony in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC on November 8, 2017, CSA awarded Certificates of Environmental Achievement to 1,810 ships owned by seventy-two companies with a total of 15,307 years of environmental excellence. The average number of years operating without incident for ships and vessels that received awards is 8.1 years.
