NYK's New LPG Dual-fuel VLGC Named Lupinus Planet

On September 2, a naming ceremony was held at Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new very large gas carrier (VLGC) that NYK will charter to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company Astomos Energy Corporation.At the ceremony, the ship was named Lupinus Planet by Toru Araki, executive vice president at Astomos Energy Corporation, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. MOL Orders Six LNG-fueled Vessels

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced it has ordered six liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled vessels—four bulk carriers and  two tankers—as the Japanese shipping company makes headway toward its goal of 90 LNG-fueled vessels by 2030.The company said on Friday signed a deal for construction of four 210,000 DWT-class Capesize bulkers with CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., marking MOL's first newbuild order from the Chinese shipyard. NYK ordered its fourth liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel very large LPG / liquefied ammonia gas (NH3) carrier (VLGC) from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI). The ship will be built at the KHI Sakaide Works shipyard and is set for delivery in 2025.Like the LPG dual-fuel very large LPG / NH3 carriers already ordered by NYK, the vessel will be equipped with separate cargo tanks designed to carry LPG and ammonia at the same time to flexibly respond to various trade patterns.In addition to the LPG dual-fuel engine, the ship will have a shaft generator that can generate electricity during the voyage by using the rotation of the shaft that connects the main engine to the propeller.

Japan, Australia to Build Green Hydrogen Supply Chain

Japan's biggest hydrogen supplier Iwatani Corp and five other firms said on Wednesday they will study the feasibility of building a green liquefied hydrogen supply chain between Japan and Australia that could produce 100 tonnes a day by around 2026.Green hydrogen is a zero-carbon fuel made by using renewable power to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Japanese Manufacturers Team to Develop Hydrogen Engines for Maritime

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., and Japan Engine Corporation formed a consortium of Japanese engine manufacturers to pursue joint development of hydrogen fueled marine engines for ocean-going and coastal vessels.Kawasaki Heavy Industries will develop medium-speed 4-stroke engines, Yanmar Power Technology will focus on medium- and high-speed 4-stroke engines, and Japan Engine Corporation will embark on the development of low-speed 2-stroke engines. All three simultaneous developments will enhance the product lineup of propulsion and auxiliary (generator) engines for a wide range of vessels. In addition, a hydrogen fuel storage and supply system will be developed as part of the integrated hydrogen fuel system.

Norden Orders Two More Bulk Carriers at NACKS

Norden announced Tuesday it has added two bulk carriers to an existing newbuilding contract with shipbuilder Nantong Cosco Khi Ship Engineering Co. (NACKS), taking the total order to six vessels.The Danish shipowner said it has already sold two of the six vessels on sale and lease back terms, freeing up liquidity.
