KDI Delivers DP Simulators to MOL in Tokyo

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) has delivered a full mission K-Sim Dynamic Positioning (DP) Simulator to MOL Marine & Engineering (MOLMEC) for the new MOL Dynamic Positioning Training Centre (MOL DPTC) in Tokyo, Japan. MOL DPTC is the first DP training center in Japan to be accredited by the Nautical Institute (NI) to provide NI-approved dynamic positioning training courses.ā€œWe Installed Kongsberg DP simulator and were able to open a quality DP training center in Tokyo, Japanā€ said Nakashima Takashi, President, MOL Marine and Engineering Co., Ltd.

Offshore Wind: Japanese Firms KCS, MOL In Cable Laying Collab

Japanese subsea cable laying firm Kokusai Cable Ship (KCS) and the shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have signed an agreement to collaborate on the operation of cable-laying ships to meet the increasing demand for the installation of power cables, especially in the offshore wind sector.KCS, established in 1966, was the first company to launch a subsea cable laying ship - the KDD Maru - in 1967. The company has, over the years, been involved in the construction of some 70,000km of submarine cables, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region, and today oversees the maintenance of over 87,000km of cable.In 2019, KCS launched the KDDI Cable Infinity, Japanā€™s first self-propelled power and telecommunication cable-laying ship. MOL and its group company MOL Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd.

Colombo Delivers Cable-Laying Vessel

Sri Lanka's Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) delivered its biggest and most sophisticated vessel, the submarine cable-laying ship KDDI Cable Infinity built for Japan's Kokusai Cable Ship Co.The KDDI Cable Infinity is meant for subsea operation and cable installation and repair works of optical cables as well as power cables. For the handling of power cables, the forward tank has been fitted with a carousel system with a Spooling Arm."This is the biggest ever vessel, price-wise as well as length-wise, to be built by CDPLC in its illustrious journey of shipbuilding excellence and the first ever ship built ā€˜in its classā€™ from Sri Lanka to Japanā€¦

NYK to Sponsor Shell XPrize Finalist

NYK has agreed to sponsor Team KUROSHIO,* a finalist in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competition, by providing the transportation for the teamā€™s unmanned robots, which are being used in this international competition to quickly and accurately map the ocean floor. Team KUROSHIO has participated in this competition over the past three years, and after passing through the technical documentation stage and an actual ocean test in Round 1, the team has advanced to Round 2, the final round, to be held in October 2018. The research team is the only Japanese representative remaining in the competition, and during the final round will be asked to map at least 250 square kilometers of ocean floor in 24 hours at ocean depths up to 4,000 meters. The results will be announced in December 2018.

Google Consortium to Lay 'FASTER' Trans-Pacific Cable

Google and five other large companies team up to build a cable under the Pacific Ocean that will deliver incredibly fast internet speeds informs system supplier NEC Corporation. A consortium of six global companies have signed commercial agreements to build and operate a new Trans-Pacific cable system to be called ā€œFASTERā€ which will connect the United States to two landing locations in Japan. Ruth Ling reports on what's new and what lies on the horizon. Twenty years ago, a revolution hit the maritime industry. Satellite communications became available to ships at sea. Back in 1982, when Inmarsat began offering onboard satellite communications, its first and only system was Inmarsat A, which offered voice, facsimile, telex and data services. After nine years of successful service and expansion into most maritime sectors, Inmarsat began offering Inmarsat C.
