Sustained and widespread measurements are needed to provide essential clues for understanding the oceans, for effective monitoring of environmental changes, and for helping to clarify the long-term effects of global warming.To meet this challenge, ocean researchers have invented various types of unmanned observing platforms.

USDOT Designates Gulfport, MS as a Strategic Port

The Mississippi State Port Authority was notified by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) that the Port of Gulfport has been designated as a Strategic Seaport by the Commander, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). With this designation, America’s military will be able to utilize the Port of Gulfport for cargo and equipment shipments. This announcement adds to South    Mississippi’s extensive military installations and capabilities. This designation is an important step in the Port of Gulfport’s long-range strategy to become one of the country’s top-tier diversified ports. Steven Palazzo Visits HII, Newport

Huntington Ingalls Industries today hosted Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., for a tour of the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. Palazzo represents the fourth district of Mississippi, which includes Newport News' sister shipyard, Ingalls Shipbuilding. The visit provided an opportunity for Palazzo to see nuclear shipbuilding at Newport News and understand the value that Mississippi suppliers contribute to ship construction in Newport News. Palazzo's visit included a tour of aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), which is about 85 percent complete and scheduled for delivery in 2016. Shipbuilding suppliers in Mississippi contribute an average $3.6 million to Newport News' efforts each year.

Virtual Desktop Cuts Number of US Navy Computers

Navy Training Commander sees benefits of desktop virtualization at the Naval AviationTechnical Training Unit. The virtual desktop initiative (VDI)  is a five year plan to deploy the VDI to more than 36,000 daily users and will replace 80 percent of the more than 23,000 desktop computers in more than 2,500 classrooms at 68 learning sites around the world. Desktop virtualization provides multiple student and instructor workstations from a centralized server environment, which eliminates physical workstations residing in an electronic classroom.

Roy Anderson Corp. Secures Contract

Roy Anderson Corporation of Gulfport, Miss., is being awarded a contract worth $22,416,336 for Task Order 0002 under an indefinite-quantity to design and build. Air Force Base. to be completed by April 2006. at the end of the current fiscal year. received and award made on Sept. 27, 2001. period and four option years. conditions of the existing contract. Three offers were received for this task order. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southern Division, North Charleston, S.C., is the contracting activity.

Coast Guard Assists Boaters to Safety

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., hoisted seven boaters who were stranded on Chandeleur Island, Miss., today. The helicopter crew diverted from a training mission after hearing the report that the 29-ft. fishing vessel, Island Gypsy, from Biloxi, Miss., with seven people onboard, was taking on water. The crew of the Island Gypsy grounded the vessel on Chandeleur Island while the helicopter crew was en route. All boaters were safely transported to Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.
