The first of two new 48-meter patrol boats for the Qatar Coastguard has completed sea trials. BMT has partnered with ARES Shipyard (ARES) to design and build 17 patrol boats from advanced composites in 36 months – 18 months ahead of schedule. The latest in the series – the 48-meter ARES 150 HERCULES has just completed sea trials with the vessel achieving a maximum speed of 37 knots. The total order from the Qatar Ministry of Interior, Coastguard has comprised of three different vessel sizes: five of 24 meters, 10 of 34 meters and two of 48 meters.

Qatar’s Coast Guard Command has taken delivery of the first in a series of 17 composite hull boats powered and propelled by MTU high-speed engines and Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets. The vessels, two Ares 75 and one Ares 110 Hercules, will be the first three boats of this program to be delivered by the end of this month. Two additional boats are planned to be delivered by the end of the year; one Ares 75 and one 110 Hercules. Meanwhile, preparations for the construction of the first Ares 150 class boat have already been completed and its launch is expected towards the end of next year.

Rolls-Royce has secured a £15.8 million contract to supply Rolls-Royce MTU high-speed engines and a suite of waterjet propulsion systems for the the Qatar Coastguard’s 17 fast patrol vessels under construction at Turkey’s ARES Shipyard. The scope of supply for Rolls-Royce Includes a total of 46 engines and waterjets, across three different sizes of craft. MTU 12V2000M84 diesel engines and Rolls-Royce Kamewa 50A3 series waterjets will be installed on five 24-meter ARES 75 HERCULES patrol boats and ten of the 34-meter ARES 110 HERCULES design.

BMT Nigel Gee (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group, and Ares Shipyard announced that the first two boats of a series of eight luxury passenger ferries destined for Qatar, have been completed and delivered to the customer. BMT worked closely with Ares Shipyard to produce an innovative design with particular attention to ease of construction. This has allowed the first two vessels to be delivered to the customer less than seven months after initial discussions on the project. The remaining six vessels will be delivered over the next four months with four currently in build.

BMT Nigel Gee, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd., has announced further collaboration with Ares Shipyard in the design of a series of eight luxury passenger ferries, destined for Qatar. At 18m long with a beam of 6.7m, the composite catamaran design will be able to carry up to 51 passengers in comfort and style. Transporting guests to the new Anantara Doha Island Resort & Spa, 11km east of Doha, the vessel has been designed to be highly capable and have the visual appearance to match.

Bureau Veritas has been chosen to class a series of unique floating dual fuel power generation units. Converted from existing bulk carriers, the powerships are self propelled portable power stations which can run on heavy fuel or gas and which plug into national grids where required. Designed and financed by Turkish energy company Karadeniz Powership Co the vessels are being converted at the Turkish Sedef Yard. Aksat Denizcilik Ve Ticaret A.S., a Turkish corporation that operated the commercial ship M/T Kerim, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Tampa, Fla., to two felony counts for knowingly failing to fully and accurately maintain an oil record book, which tracks pollutant discharge, the Justice Department announced. During the hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Richard A. Lazzara sentenced the company to pay a $725,000 fine and to serve three years of probation.
