NYC Exploring Ways to Move More Freight Via Waterways

New York City is looking at ways to help shift freight transportation off of its busy roads and onto the waterways.The city's Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) and Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) on Wednesday jointly released a Request for Information and Expressions of Interest (RFEI) seeking private sector feedback to help it gauge industry challenges and opportunities, and explore ways to implement and support businesses to engage in waterfront freight operations.The initiative is part of NYC's "Blue Highways" program, launched under the city's previous mayor, Bill de Blasio.

Hornblower Secures New NYC Ferry Operating Contract

US Monitoring Russian 'Intelligence Gathering Ship' Near Hawaii

The United States in recent weeks has been tracking what is believed to be a Russian military spy ship off the coast of the Hawaiian Islands.The U.S. Coast Guard said in an update on Thursday that it has been keeping tabs on the vessel, a suspected "intelligence gathering ship", for several weeks. Video footage released by the agency showed the ship in waters off the Hawaiian coast on January 11.The ship has been identified as the Kareliya (SSV-535), a Vishnya-class intelligence ship used by the Russian Navy for signals intelligence gathering.

Injured Crewmember Medevaced in the North Pacific

An injured crewmember was airlifted Tuesday from a Hong Kong- flagged bulk carrier in the north Pacific Ocean, approximately 230 nautical miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.Watchstanders from the 17th Coast Guard District received a report from the Xin Li Hia crew at approximately 5:20 p.m. Sunday requesting a medevac of a crewmember who was suffering from severe abdominal pain. The ship was approximately 800 nautical miles southwest of Dutch Harbor at the time of the report. The Xin Li Hia crew was advised to transit towards Dutch Harbor until they were in-range of the helicopter crew for the medevac.Watchstanders diverted Coast Guard Cutter Kimball to the sceneā€¦

Eleventh National Security Cutter Named Elizebeth Smith Friedman

The U.S. Coast Guard is naming the 11th Legend-Class National Security Cutter (NSC) in honor of Elizebeth Smith Friedman.Friedman was a pioneering code-breaker for the Coast Guard during the Prohibition Era and World War II, serving within the Coast Guard Cryptanalytic Unit-387. She has been dubbed "America's first female cryptanalyst" and in many ways could be considered the founder of the modern-day Coast Guard Intelligence Program.Her work with the Coast Guard began soon after the passage of the Volstead Act, which prohibited the manufacture, sale, or trade of alcohol in the United States.

Ingalls Shipbuilding: $930M Contract for Pair of USCG Ships

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (NYSE: HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received two fixed-price incentive contracts from the U.S. Coast Guard to build two additional National Security Cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard. The contract values for the a 10th and 11th ships in the program are $468.75 million for NSC 10 and $462.13 million for NSC 11.ā€œThis additional funding for two NSCs is a great accomplishment on which to end the year,ā€ said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias.

Ingalls to Build NSC 10 for USCG

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ Ingalls Shipbuilding division received a $94 million fixed-price contract from the U.S. Coast Guard today to purchase long-lead materials for a 10th National Security Cutter (NSC). ā€œNational Security Cutters continue to be extremely important assets for the coastal defense of our homeland,ā€ said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias. ā€œThese ships are enabling the Coast Guardā€™s missions in not only defending our shores, but also in the detection and interdiction of drugs and other contraband. The advance procurement funds will be used to purchase major components for NSC 10, such as steel, the main propulsion systems, generators, electrical switchboards and major castings.

Horizon Delivers Landing Barge

A new landing barge delivered to Sunset Key Transportation Corporation will provide access to the Sunset Key Resort located on a small island near Key West, Fla. Ordered to replace LCM8 boats purchased from the U.S. Government that are now at the end of their service life, the new barge was built be Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc., with detail design performed in-house by the yardā€™s engineering department based on a basic design from Shipwright, LLC. The barge is 60ā€™ long with an 18ā€™ molded beam. Horizon said it enlisted Gulf Coast Air and Hydraulics for the ramp hydraulic system.

GE Marine Gas Turbines Selected for US Navy, Coast Guard

GEā€™s Marine Solutions said its LM2500 family of aeroderivative marine gas turbines have been selected to power two newbuild surface combatants for U.S. Navy and Coast Guard programs. Specifically, two LM2500+ gas turbines will power Bougainville (LHA 8), the U.S. Navyā€™s newest multi-purpose amphibious assault ship. Construction is expected to begin shortly according to shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries. GE LM2500+ gas turbines also power first-in-class USS America (LHA 6) and Tripoli (LHA 7).

GEā€™s Marine Solutions announced that the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned Munro, a new National Security Cutter (NSC), on April 1 in Seattle, Washington. All of thenew Legend class cutters use the same COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion system featuring one GE LM2500 gas turbine and two diesel engines. According to a U.S. Coast Guard press release, Munro is the fourth NSC to be homeported on the West Coast in Alameda, Calif. It was commissioned in Seattle to honor the Coast Guardā€™s only Medal of Honor recipient, Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro (1919-1942).

USCGC Kimball Christened; GE Marine Gas Turbines Provide Power

The U.S. Coast Guardā€™s seventh new National Security Cutter, Kimball (WMSL 756), was christened on March 4. The ceremony was held at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss. According to HII, Kimball is the third ship named in honor of Sumner I. Kimball. The first Kimball (WSC/WMEC-143) was commissioned in 1927, and was eventually decommissioned in 1968. The second ship to bear the name was SS Sumner I. Kimball (EC2-S-C1); it was torpedoed and sank by the Nazi submarine U-960 with the loss of 64 American lives.

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division christened the seventh Legend-class National Security Cutter, Kimball (WMSL 756), on March 4 in front of approximately 1,000 guests. ā€œWe wouldnā€™t be able to bring this ship to life without the great work that we see here at Huntington Ingalls shipyard,ā€ said U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul F. Zukunft, who was the ceremonyā€™s keynote speaker. ā€œI am moved every time I come onto this facility and I see ā€˜What you do today matters.ā€™ And the reason why it matters so much is that in the year 2060ā€¦

Several Milestones on US Navy, Coast Guard Builds

GEā€™s Marine Solutions noted that several milestones were recently marked on U.S. Navy and Coast Guard surface combatant programs that all use GEā€™s LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines. On December 23, 2016, the U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the fifth Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), the future USS Gabrielle Giffords. GE will provide 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships to be built by Austal USA. The two LM2500s are arranged in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) configuration with two diesel engines.

Ingalls Authenticates Keel of NSC Midgett

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division today authenticated the keel of the eighth U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter, Midgett (WMSL 757). ā€œThe National Security Cutter Program is vital to our Coast Guard, our country and to Ingalls Shipbuilding,ā€ said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias. ā€œToday, we lay the foundation upon which this great ship will be built. The ship is named to honor John Allen Midgett, who was awarded the silver cup by the U.K. Board of Trade in 1918 for the renowned rescue of 42 British sailors aboard the British tanker Mirlo after it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of North Carolina. He was also awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1924.

Ingalls to Build NSC 9 for USCG

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $486 million fixed-price incentive contract from the U.S. Coast Guard to build a ninth National Security Cutter. ā€œWith the experience and knowledge our shipbuilders bring to this program, I am confident NSC 9 will be another great ship and continue the great success on this program,ā€ said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias. NSCs are the flagships of the Coast Guardā€™s cutter fleet, designed to replace the 12 Hamilton-class high-endurance cutters, which entered service during the 1960s. Ingalls has delivered six NSCs and has two more under construction: Kimball (WMSL 756) and Midgett (WMSL 757). These ships are scheduled to be delivered in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Ingalls Launches National Security Cutter Kimball

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched the National Security Cutter Kimball (WMSL 756) on Saturday. Kimball is the seventh NSC Ingalls has built for the U.S. Coast Guard; christening is scheduled for March 4, 2017. ā€œThis is an important milestone for Kimball and the National Security Cutter program,ā€ Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias said. Kimball was translated via Ingallsā€™ rail car system to the floating dry dock last week, and the dock was moved away from the pier on Saturday morning. With the assistance of tugboats, Kimball launched off the dock on Saturday afternoon. U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter (NSC) Munro (WMSL 755) has completed builderā€™s sea trials following three days in the Gulf of Mexico testing all of the shipā€™s systems. Munro is the sixth NSC built at Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division, whose test and trials team extensively tested the shipsā€™ propulsion, electrical systems, damage control, anchor handling, small boat operations and combat systems. This culminated in the successful completion of a four-hour, full-power propulsion run.

Mike Petters, president and CEO of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), was honored by the Coast Guard Foundation at the 35th annual Salute to the United States Coast Guard, held last Thursday at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. At the dinner, Petters and HII were recognized for their support of the Coast Guard Foundation and its mission. ā€œHuntington Ingalls Industries has been a strong supporter of the Coast Guard Foundation for the past 30 years,ā€ said Anne Brengle, the foundationā€™s president.

Huntington Ingalls Industriesā€™ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched the U.S. Coast Guardā€™s newest National Security Cutter (NSC), Munro (WMSL 755), on Saturday, the shipbuilder announced. Munro is the companyā€™s sixth NSC and is expected to deliver by the end of next year. ā€œThe National Security Cutter program is in a very mature state,ā€ said Derek Murphy, Ingallsā€™ NSC program manager. ā€œNSC 6 is the most complete ship at launch, and we accomplished this a week earlier than scheduled.

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbine will power the United States Coast Guardā€™s eighth National Security Cutter Midgett (WMSL 757). The ship will be powered by one GE LM2500 gas turbine and two diesel engines in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion system. All eight ships in the U.S. Coast Guardā€™s Legend-class cutter program feature the same LM2500-based CODAG propulsion arrangement. Similar to its sister NSCs, Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division will construct the 418-foot-long Midgett at its Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard.

The 11th annual Norm Manly Puget Sound Maritime (PSM) / Youth Maritime Training Association (YMTA) Maritime Educational Scholarship competition was held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Compass Course Maritime Training. Bethany Shimasaki from Des Moines and attended Seattle Christian School, volunteers at Seattle Aquarium, and is planning to attend the University of California San Diego, majoring in marine science received a $2,000 scholarship  sponsored by Ocean Peace, Inc. The fifth National Security Cutter, James, completed builderā€™s trials in Pascagoula, Mississippi, marking the next step in preparing the cutter for delivery to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).
