The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen from a liferaft 8 miles west of Cape Blanco at 1:15 p.m., Sunday. The three fishermen, reportedly uninjured, are aboard a Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Lifeboat en route to Station Coos Bay, located in Charleston, after abandoning their fishing vessel when it started taking on water. Coast Guard watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a mayday call from the fishing vessel McCalis, homeported in Charleston, over VHF-FM radio channel 16 at 11:54 a.m. The fishing crew reported their fishing vessel was taking on water through the fish hold and the dewatering pumps were not keeping up. The crew also announced their intention to abandon ship.

Kohler Power Systems has announced two promotions within its marine segment. Patrick Kline has been promoted to Global Marine, Americas, KPS; and Frank Formas has been appointed to MGR – Field Service, Global Marine, KPS. In his new role, Kline has overall responsibility for all Global Marine sales efforts in the Americas. While at Kohler, he has established a rapport with the North American Global Marine distribution channel and has introduced Global Marine into unexplored markets. In his new position, Kline will continue to develop the Global Marine Americas network toward further segment diversification and area coverage expansion.

Kathy J. Metcalf will assume the role of president and CEO of the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA), succeeding Joseph J. Cox, who will retire on May 31, 2015, though will continue to assist the organization on various issues in an advisory capacity. Captain Bruce Fernie, chairman of the CSA board, said“[Metcalf] has been with CSA for 17+ years and brings a solid background of seagoing service and shore responsibilities with shipping companies that will continue to serve us well.” Metcalf is currently CSA’s director of marine affairs.

ExxonMobil today announced $18 million in grants to Houston health care facilities to support cancer prevention and cardiovascular research, expand pediatric care for children with autism and enhance pediatric liver disease research and clinical services. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will receive $10 million; $5 million will go to the Texas Heart Institute and $3 million to Texas Children’s Hospital. “ExxonMobil has had a long and deep involvement with Houston and Texas,” said Rex W. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) President: Koichi Muto has announced an improvement of the Asia-South Africa container traffic network with the following changes aimed to meet customer needs by providing direct services and contimuous port coverage. Opening of the new route "ASA" linking Central and South China, Taiwan, South East Asia and South Africa starting on 8th April 2012. MOL will offer a weekly service by joining the existing ASA service operated by Kline (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha) and PIL (Pacific International Lines).

MOL will join  new Asia and South Africa Service (ASA). Opening of the new route, linking Central and South China, Taiwan, South East Asia and South Africa, will start on April 8, 2012. MOL will offer a weekly service by joining the existing ASA service, operated by Kline (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha) and PIL (Pacific International Lines). The service will be operated by 8 vessels, and MOL will provide one ship (MV MOL DELIGHT). This service will offer direct inbound and outbound service between Central China, Taiwan and the South Africa region and strengthen the existing network in South Africa (Durban and Cape Town).

Senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash.) introduced the "States Prevention of Oil Tanker Spills Act" (S. 2506), which seeks to reinstate Washington state oil tanker safety laws overturned by the Supreme Court in Intertanko v. Locke and United States v. Locke. In a press release, Senator Gorton said, "I disagree with the Court's decision, because I believe Washington State should be allowed to protect its shores as it sees fit." The Gorton legislation would reinstate the right of all states to adopt additional standards beyond existing federal requirements governing the operation, maintenance, equipment, personnel and manning of oil tankers. While the legislation would apply to all coastal states, Gorton's interest is focused on recently overturned Washington statutes.
