Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has taken delivery of a coal carrier equipped with a binary cycle power-generation system that utilizes engine exhaust heat.The new coal carrier Pirika Mosiri Maru that NYK will own and operate to transport coal for Hokkaido Electric Power(HEPCO), was delivered yesterday (January 23) at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line)  together with Asahi Shipping, has concluded a long-term contract with Kobe Steel for the transport of coal for up to 20 years aboard a newly built ship. After delivery of the new vessel from Oshima Shipbuilding in 2021, the ship will transport coal from locations outside Japan to mainly the city of Kobe. This ship will be equipped with a diesel engine compliant with a more stringent environmental regulation limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions — i.e., the Tier III limits in the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) that require a reduction in NOx emissions by 80 percent compared to 2000 levels.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that on October 27, a naming ceremony for the Shinzan Maru, a newbuilding iron ore carrier that will sail under a long-term transport contract with Kobe Steel, Ltd., was held at the Hiroshima Shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Among those on at the ceremony were Kobe Steel Chairman, President, CEO, and Representative Director Mr. Hiroya Kawasaki, who named the new vessel. Thereafter his wife cut the rope. Shinzan Maru is an established name for vessels transporting raw materials to Kobe Steel that dates back to the era of Yamashita-Shinnihon Steamship Co., Ltd. (YSL), one of MOL’s predecessors. The new vessel is the third generation to sail under the Shinzan Maru name, and will ensure a stable transportation of iron ore for Kobe Steel.

Kobe Steel, Ltd. said it has received an order to supply the first two screw compressors for use with marine dual fuel engines. The compressors will be installed in an LNG carrier to be owned by a 50/50 joint venture between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Co., Ltd. (or MOL) and Itochu Corporation for Uniper Global Commodities SE, a subsidiary of Uniper SE, Europe’s one of largest power and gas companies. Uniper Global Commodities will charter the new carrier for 20 years. Plans call for Kobe Steel to deliver the compressors in August 2017 to South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., which is constructing the vessel. Noboru Ueda, Chairman and President of ClassNK announced that it has granted type approval for the new MX-200F welding consumable, developed by Kobe Steel Co., Ltd. (KOBELCO) to greatly improve welding efficiency and coating quality in commercial vessels. Up until now, shipbuilders using conventional fillet welding consumables had to make two welding passes for the required weld leg lengths of around 8mm or above. As the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) require the use of 8mm leg lengths in some structural members, this has meant that the relevant welding time for oil tanker and bulk carrier newbuildings has virtually doubled. Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) was the only Russian company to take part in SEA JAPAN 2014 exhibition and conference – one of the major exhibitions of the maritime industry. The event which brought together the leading industry representatives of the world took place between 9 to 11 April 2014 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre in Tokyo, Japan. The participants of the exhibition were 489 companies from 27 countries of the world. The special focus of the exhibition were the advanced global environment protection technologies including the development of diesel engines with low pollutant emission to the atmosphere, hi-tech energy saving devices and technologies such as air lubrication systems for ship hulls, solar batteries for ships and ecologically clean coatings.
