Gladding-Hearn Refitting Ferry for Government of Bermuda

The Government of Bermuda’s Marine and Port Services has chosen Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to undertake a major refit of the 700-passenger ferry Bermudian. Built in 1988, the 118’ steel vessel completed the 635-mile crossing of the North Atlantic, arriving at the Somerset, Mass. shipyard, this week. Resolute, one of two high-speed passenger catamarans delivered by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to the Government of Bermuda, Ministry on Transport in 2002, has returned to service after a compete refit. Bermuda Ferry Returns to Gladding-Hearn for Refit

Resolute, one of two high-speed passenger catamarans delivered by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation to Bermuda's Ministry on Transport in 2002, has returned to the shipyard for a complete refit. The project’s completion is scheduled for May 2021.Designed by Incat Design (currently Incat Crowther), the all-aluminum 250-passenger vessel measures 84 feet long, 30 feet abeam and draws 5.3 feet.Among myriad items to remove, repair or replace is replacing the vessel’s Detroit Diesel engines with new engine controls and monitoring systems to operate twin MTU 10V2000M72 diesel engines…

Gladding-Hearn Delivers Ferry for NYC's Circle Line

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, delivered again for New York City-based Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, Inc., this the sixth 165-ft., 599-passenger sightseeing vessels. Designed by DeJong and Lebet, N.A. and builf from steel, the 165 x 34 x 12.8 ft. vessel has a top speed of 14 knots powered by twin Cummins QSK-38M1 diesel engines delivering a total of 2600 hp and connected to ZF W3355 gear boxes, spinning 60-inch, 5-bladed bronze propellers. For dockside maneuvering, the vessel is equipped with a 125 hp Wesmar bow thruster, powered by an electric motor.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers NYC Sightseeing Vessel

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, said it has delivered Circle Line Bronx, the first of three new sightseeing vessels for Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, Inc., in New York City. “The new vessels will offer guests an enhanced sightseeing experience on every level,” according to Costas Markou, president and chief operating officer of New York Cruise Lines. Vessel Spotlight: RV Meen Shandhani

IMC’s latest fisheries research and survey vessel design was built in Malaysia for the Bangladesh Department of Fisheries. RV Meen Shandhani arrived in Bangladesh in June after completing extensive sea and fishing trials and its delivery voyage. The Australian consultancy’s naval architects and engineers drew on a wealth of relevant experience, data and expertise when developing the research vessel’s design. Formed in 1994, IMC and its principals have a long interest in, and association with, the fisheries sector.

Blount Boats Delivers Chicago Tour Boat

Blount Boats of Warren, R.I. has delivered the M/V Skyview to Shoreline Sightseeing, marking the builder’s second delivery for the Chicago sightseeing company. With a LOA of 100 feet and maximum beam of 35 feet, the steel Subchapter K passenger vessel designed by Seacraft Design, LLC is certified to carry up to 318 passengers and will operate as an architectural tour boat in partially protected waters. The vessel is powered by twin Volvo D13 MH, 400hp diesels with twin 65 kW John Deere generators, ZF W325 gearboxes, 2.933:1 ratio supplied and commissioned by Allemand Industries, Harvey, LA.

Kobelt Acquires Accu-Steer

Manufacturer of quality hydraulic steering actuators will join Kobelt to expand marine system offerings. Kobelt announced today the acquisition of Accu-Steer Inc., a US-based manufacturer of quality Hydraulic Steering Actuators. Founded by Bill Pulse and Paul Barber in 1993, Accu-Steer designs and builds a range of hydraulic power steering units. For over 22 years, the company has specialized in the design and manufacturing of reliable solutions for guiding and controlling motion on commercial vessels and pleasure craft. “The synergies between the Kobelt and Accu-Steer product lines make these two companies such a natural fit.” stated Bill Pulse, Accu-Steer President.

Kobelt Hires Business Development Managers

Kobelt announced today the hiring of Lance Lidstone and Sylvain Robitaille as Business Development Managers. Both will report directly to David Bockhold, CEO, and will be responsible for business development in the controls and steering sectors worldwide. Lance Lidstone comes to Kobelt with over 30 years of experience in technical sales and engineering roles with Wagner, Jastram and AMT. Lance has a deep technical understanding of steering systems, classifications and hydraulics, but has also held roles in senior management and sales, providing a balanced approach to understanding the needs and requirements of the shipbuilding industry.

Vietnam Shipyard Builds New Caledonia Tugboat

Cty TNHH Vuot Song, the subsidiary shipyard of Roy’s Maritime in Vietnam has just finished the construction of a 16-m long tugboat for New Caledonia, that will be delivered to the ship owner early 2014. The tugboat ‘Taabya.on’ is 16 meters long and 6.20 meters in breadth with a 16-tonee bollard pull, and will be used for the transportation of nickel in New Caledonia. Build of the new vessel was supervised by classification society Bureau Veritas, and New Caledonian Maritime in accordance with the divison 222.

Kobelt Manufacturing Acquired by Private Equity Firm

Kobelt enters a new era with retirement of Jack Kobelt and acquisition of company by US investment company Bow River Capital Partners. Jack Kobelt founded Kobelt Manufacturing from his basement in 1962, developing unique, hand-engineered components for the marine industry. Over the next five decades his manufacturing company produced a broad range of rugged marine steering and controls and disk brakes designed to perform in the most challenging environments. Kobelt has collected dozens of patents for its cutting-edge products, which are sold in over 100 countries. Mr. Kobelt has elected to sell the company and transition into retirement. David Bockhold has been selected to take over the reins as Kobelt’s new CEO.

Analytic Systems Products ABS Certified

Analytic Systems has announced that it has responded to its commercial marine reseller network in North America and started the process of certifying their marine specific power conversion products. These products will be highlighted at the Multi-Agency Combat Craft Conference at Norfolk, VA in May, 2012. The first models to be certified to ABS standards are the new BCA1505 (1500W AC charger); the BCA310 (300W AC charger); the IPS300 (300W DC/AC Puresine inverter) and the VTC315 (Isolated DC/DC voltage converter). In addition a new line of cost reduced Intelligent AC battery chargers, cost reduced power supplies and inverters will also be highlighted. ABS has provided Analytic Systems with their Certificate of Manufacturing Assessment # VA2089914-A-X.

A Good Hull Deserves a Good Rebuild

British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, has some attractive and well-proven tugs, but the fleet is aging with many vessels over thirty years old. Cummins Power for Arabian Gulf Crewboat

The Kuwaiti company, Arabian Gulf Mechanical Services and Contracting Co. Ltd., has been operating a 30.5-meter Grandweld-built crew boat since the summer of 2007. The successful boat, named Fraih-8, carries a 6.4-meter beam with a 3.25-meter depth allowing for 8400 gallons of fuel and 2000 gallons of fresh water as well as 195 gallons each of black water, grey water, Lube and hydraulic oil. Accommodation for an 8-member crew is provided along with seating for 24 off-shore personnel.Propulsion is provided by a pair of Cummins KTA38-M2 engines each producing 1400 HP at 1950 RPM and turning into ZF 3055 gears with 2.5:1 reduction and turning five-blade propellers for speeds in the 20 knot range. Engine controls are by ZF Mathers and steering is by Kobelt.

News: Sarawak: Taking a Global Position

To many westerners the names Borneo and Sarawak conjure up images of jungle rivers and dugout canoes. While the jungle rivers remain, the dug out canoes have largely been replaced by modern steel ferries and tugs. The Malaysian province of Sarawak has gained considerable affluence over the past half century from its strong forest industry, but as is the case throughout much of the world, this is now in decline. But the forest industry created a maritime legacy in the many small shipyards that developed to build work boats for moving the logs and lumber to market. The skills and resources built up during the boom times in the forest industry have funded a number of newer shipyards and provided updated equipment to established yards.

Eastern Wins Casino Vessel Contract

The Big M Casino, Inc of Fort Myers, Fla., has awarded a contract to Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City, Florida to construct a casino vessel. The as yet unnamed vessel will join the existing vessel, Royal Gambler, in providing offshore casino services to the Fort Myers market. The vessel was designed by John W. Gilbert and Associates, a prominent naval architect firm located in Hingham, Massachusetts. The interior design will be performed by Bauer Interiors of New Orleans, Louisiana.Bauer Interiors is one of the best-known companies in design, traffic and ergonomics of casino vessels. The vessel is 186 ft. long with a beam of 38 ft. and a molded depth of 11.5 ft., and depending on conditions, will have a loaded draft of 8 ft. She will accommodate 600 passengers plus a crew of 72.

ITS Back in the U.S.

The trade fair element of the eighteenth International Tug & Salvage Convention & Exhibition, (ITS) being held at the Bal Harbour Beach Resort in Miami from 26th-30th April 2004, will be dominated by propulsion and associated machinery manufacturers and tug building yards. First New Tier 2 Engine for European Rivers

Ketels, the Cummins dealer in Gent, Belgium, completed the first European installation of the new Cummins Tier 2 compliant QSK38 M. The engine, delivering 1200 HP at 1800 RPM, has been installed in the inland waterway barge Lambada. The new engine is evolved from the popular and reliable KTA38 that is so well known in the marine world. Then main engine was installed with a new Twin Disc MGX5321DC with 4.96:1 reduction and Kobelt controls. The recently developed Cummins C Command Elite engine control panel system was also installed. Bernard Ketels also reports that, “We installed a CJC offline filter separator (C.C. JENSEN). However it’s an offline filter, we installed it inline.

Chesapeake Shipbuilding Signs Contract

Chesapeake Shipbuilding Corporation of Salisbury, Md., announced that it has signed a contract to design and build a 214-ft. luxury overnight coastal and inland cruiseship. The vessel will be American Flag and operated on domestic cruises within the U.S. This will be the eighth overnight cruise vessel designed and built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding and the third one in the last 4 years. Passenger staterooms will be the largest in the coastal cruise trade, averaging approximately 240 sq. ft. Construction started about 1 week ago and the vessel is expected to be launched in late 2003. The vessel will be powered by twin Caterpillar 3412E diesels. Onboard will be 3 generators: two 260Kw and one 170 Kw. The vessel will also have a 250hp hydraulic bowthruster.

Hope Services’ 72-ft. Pushboats are a Higman Standard

Hope Services of Dulac, La., have built two more of their popular 72 x 30-ft. pushboats. These two, the eighteenth and nineteenth to the design, are for Higman Towing of Houston, Texas. The first was delivered last May and the second is currently undergoing sea trials for an early August delivery. Each boat is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38 M0 engines rated for 850 hp at 1,800 rpm. The engines turn into Twin Disc 540 gears with 6.14:1 reduction. The 73 x 58-in. four-blade stainless propellers are mounted on six-in. stainless shafts. Electrical needs are met by a pair of Cummins 6B series powered 50 kW gen sets. Accommodation on the 1,700 hp tugs is provided for six people in three staterooms with additional space utilized for a washer and dryer.
