Saab Receives Order for Life Extension of Swedish Mine Countermeasures Ships

Saab has signed an agreement with FMV on the life extension of two Koster-class mine countermeasures ships. The order value is SEK 350 million. The contract also includes options for FMV to order measures regarding the remaining three ships in the Koster-class. The total value of the options are SEK 270 million.The contract with FMV means that Saab will carry out life extensions of two Koster-class mine countermeasures ships. The modernization involves an exchange of systems for life extension and enhanced capabilities to ensure continued operability.

New Swedish SIGINT Ship Launched

Sweden’s new signals intelligence (SIGINT) vessel was launched from the Nauta Shiprepair Yard in Gdynia, Poland.Outfitting and equipment installation will take place in Nauta Shiprepair Yard, after which the vessel will undergo harbour and sea trials. The ship will then sail to Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona to complete outfitting of special systems.The launching ceremony took place in PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia on April 17 and was attended by representatives of the Polish government, the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) and Saab, as well as representatives of the Royal Swedish Navy, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Swedish National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA)…

Kongsberg Tech Package for Sweden’s New Subs

India Shortlists 5 Shipyards for $10.1 Bln Submarines Project

India's top government committee has selected five Indian shipyards to compete for an Rs 64,000-crore ($10.1 Bln) project to build high-tech submarines for the navy. The Indian Navy will soon invite tenders for building six conventional submarines after a high-level committee of the Defence Ministry submitted its report identifying shipyards capable of executing the project. “The Committee has visited all the shipyards in the country and has submitted its report recently. Saab Bags $1 bln Order for Swedish Submarines

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded contracts worth Skr8.6bn ($1.03bn) to Saab AB for the construction of two new Type A26 submarines and a mid-life upgrade for two Gotland-class submarines. Work on the two A26s is to be completed by 2024. Type A26 submarines are nearly 207 feet in length, 21 feet in the beam and have an endurance of 45 days or 18 days underwater. They have a test depth of about 658 feet. This new development will see Saab construct, verify, and deliver two new Type A26 submarines for the Swedish Navy for a total order value of SEK7.6bn ($912.84m). 'Extreme stealth is at the heart of the Kockums A26 submarine.

Germany Looking to Dock Submarine Deal with India

The German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is visiting India lobbying for the purchase of German Stealth Submarines and European military hardware, say local media. Sources said that Ursula  talked of Eurofighter and [HDW] submarines in her discussions with Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. India reportedly asked Germany what all it could offer if a direct deal was struck between the two countries on next-generation submarines. The move comes after India recently announced to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. It's Official: Sweden Boosts Submarine Fleet

Sweden has given a long-awaited green light to the planned procurement of two new-generation A26 submarines from Saab Kockums. Sweden's official announcement ordering two new submarines to boost its armed forces, months after a futile hunt for a suspected Russian mini-sub in the Stockholm archipelago. A statement released by the defence minister's office on 19 March said that the A26 order will secure Sweden's submarine capability beyond 2030. The subs are also set to be delivered by 2022 at the latest. "The order... will ensure Sweden's underwater capacity beyond 2030," Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said in a statement. "Underwater capacity is a central part of Sweden's defence in peace time, as well as during emergencies and war," the ministry added.

Sweden Orders New Submarines

Sweden is to buy two new submarines from constructors Saab Kockums. The A26 subs are to be delivered by 2022 and will cost up to SEK 8.2 billion ($945 million). "This is the biggest single decision when it comes to economic investments that we will make during this parliament. The decision, to be formally made by the cabinet on Thursday, is to ensure Swedish submarine capability past 2030", stated Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist. "These are the next generation of submarine. These submarines will be very hi-tech", he added. The government will on Thursday authorize the armed forces to order two submarines, defense ministry spokeswoman Marinette Nyh Radebo said.

Saab, Damen Jointly Pursue Submarine Contracts

Swedish defense and security company Saab has partnered with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards to explore future opportunities in the international submarine market, signing an exclusive teaming agreement to work together in pursuit of the potential Walrus-class submarine replacement program for the Netherlands. Additionally, Saab and Damen will also explore ways in which they might bid jointly on other submarine procurement programs. Through the acquisition of Kockums, Saab has experience in the design and manufacture of submarines and surface vessels for a global customer base, integrating advanced systems and using a range of ultra-modern materials and construction techniques. Key technology includes Saab’s unique Air Independent Propulsion System based on the Stirling engine.

Saab to Overhaul Submarine HMS Halland

Defence and security company Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to overhaul the submarine HMS Halland. The order covers the period 2014-2015 and is valued at MSEK 130. The order is part of the letter of intent regarding the Swedish armed forces' underwater capability, which was announced on 9 June 2014. The overhaul includes all the necessary measures to ensure the submarine's operational availability. According to HMS Halland's standard maintenance plan, this type of overhaul is conducted every six years. One provision of the contract is to define future needs for maintenance, which could result in additional work being contracted separately during the period.

Saab Completes Acquisition of TKMS (Kockums)

Defence and security company Saab's acquisition of the Swedish shipyard Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS, formerly Kockums) has now been completed. The acquisition strengthens Saab's position as a comprehensive supplier of naval military systems. The required decisions and approvals for Saab's acquisition of TKMS have now been granted. The company will become a business unit within Saab's business area Security and Defence Solutions. The business unit is named Saab Kockums. Saab expects operations will continue to be carried out primarily in Malmö, Karlskrona and Muskö. In June, Saab and FMV signed a letter of intent regarding the Swedish armed forces' underwater capabilities.

Saab Acquires ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AB

Defence and security company Saab has today entered into an agreement with ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG regarding the acquisition of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AB (TKMS AB, formerly Kockums). The purchase price is MSEK 340. This acquisition is in line with Saab’s ambition to increase its capabilities in the naval domain. This move further strengthens Saab’s status as a comprehensive supplier of military systems. In April 2014, Saab and ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding regarding the acquisition of the Swedish shipyard TKMS AB with operations based in Karlskrona, Malmö and Muskö, Sweden. The parties have now agreed that Saab will acquire TKMS AB. The purchase price is MSEK 340.

Status Report: Lightweight Structures at Sea

SP Fire Technology’s involvement in fire-resistant lightweight materials for marine applications has contributed to the construction of several smaller lightweight vessels, and to the current discussion within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of how larger ocean-going vessels could be built using plastic composites. 2005 saw the start of the LÄSS project, which clearly showed the potential economic and environmental benefits of using lightweight materials such as aluminum or fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite for the construction of ships.

HamiltonJet has been selected as the propulsion partner in three recent catamarans working in the offshore industry. In each case the combination of wide operating envelope, enhanced maneuverability and proven durable design were contributing factors in the selection of the propulsion and control package. The first of these vessels to be built was Windcat 21, constructed by A.F. Theriault & Son for the UK/Netherlands based Windcat Workboats. Windcat has been supplying vessels for the offshore wind farm support market since the early 2000s.

Northrop Grumman Upgrades Swedish Subs

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has won a contract to upgrade the inertial navigation systems (INS) for the Swedish navy’s submarines. Under the contract, awarded by Kockums AB, Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit will supply five MK 39 Mod 3C ring laser gyro systems for installation on two Gotland-class and two Södermanland-class submarines, with one set to be used for spares and training. The MK 39 Mod 3C systems will replace the existing spinning mass gyrocompasses currently fitted on the submarines. CA Clase AB, Sperry Marine’s sales and service representative in Sweden, was instrumental in securing the order. Kockums AB will perform the installations, which will be completed by 2011.

AVEVA to Acquire Tribon Solutions AB

AVEVA Group, has announced the proposed acquisition of Tribon Solutions AB. Since 1967, AVEVA, formerly known as Cadcentre, has been providing IT solutions and services to the process, power and offshore industries. A recent survey of all CAD designed facilities in the North Sea shows a large proportion of all Crude Oil production in that region is processed by facilities designed with AVEVA Solutions. Similar figures relate to the global power, petrochemical and pulp and paper industries. Marine design, specifically that of hulls and other floating structures, poses specific challenges and practices not seen in plant design or ship outfitting -- sectors in which AVEVA already has established strength.

CAD/CAM: Producing Better, More Cost Efficient Ships

The advent of software solutions has infiltrated nearly every sector of the maritime market - from propulsion performance monitoring packages to personnel. It arguably has had no greater impact, though, than in the design and construction of new vessels. CAD/CAM/CAE programs are invaluable assets to the designer, builder and operator of vessels of all sizes and dimensions. Not only do advanced programs allow for the creation of the an efficient and cost effective ship structure and outfitting, they provide for enhanced manufacturing practices and techniques, and increasingly help devise a life-cycle maintenance and care plan which can tack profitable years onto a vessel's life.

Saab Awaits ASC Ruling

Swedish defense group Saab AB said it understood the Australian government wished to negotiate about Saab's stake in the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC), though it had not been officially informed. Saab acquired the 49 percent ASC stake during a consolidation of the Swedish defense industry last year. As part of the shake-up Saab intends to transfer the holding to Germany's Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), a major producer of conventionally powered submarines which now controls the Swedish Kockums naval shipyard. "We understand the Australian government has taken a decision to negotiate with us about the ASC stake, which they have a pre-emptive right to do," Saab senior executive vice-president Lars Josefsson said.
