Three Chinese Fishermen Dead in S.Korea Coastguard Confrontation

China lodges protest with Seoul over the incident. Three Chinese fishermen were killed on Thursday in a fire that broke out on their boat when South Korean coastguard men trying to apprehend them for illegal fishing threw flash grenades into a room they were hiding in, a South Korean official said. Disputes over illegal fishing are an irritant in relations between China and U.S. ally South Korea, even as their economic relations grow close. They also share concern about North Korea's nuclear weapon and missile programmes. The three men were believed to have suffocated, a coastguard official in the South Korean port city of Mokpo said, adding that the incident was being investigated.

Chinese Boat Capsizes off South Korea

South Korean maritime police on Wednesday withdrew divers after they failed to find at least five people believed to be trapped inside a Chinese fishing boat that capsized near a small southwestern island off South Korea on Wednesday, reports AP. Four people were rescued by nearby Chinese fishing boats, but another man pulled by South Korean divers was feared to be dead, according to an official from the Ministry of Public Safety and Security. The boat keeled over while being towed by another Chinese fishing boat after developing engine problems, a spokeswoman of the Mokpo Coastguard said. The accident occurred early today, some 85 kilometres (52 miles) northwest of Gageo Island in Shinan County.

Chinese Fisherman killed in South Korean Coastguard Raid

A Chinese fisherman was killed on Friday in a South Korean coastguard operation to apprehend his vessel which was operating illegally off South Korea's west coast, the South Korean coastguard said, drawing an angry response from China. Coastguard officers fired eight bullets when they raided the boat in the Yellow Sea. While the coastguard said no bullet wound or bleeding was found on the crew member, a hospital official said he appeared to have been killed by a bullet to his right lung. The coastguard said an autopsy would determine the cause of death. The killing will irritate relations between the two countries but is unlikely to derail efforts to forge a stronger economic partnership. China is South Korea's biggest trading partner.

GPS Jamming Affects Ship Navigation off Korean Coast

122 ships, including Coast Guard vessels and a passenger vessel, have reported malfunctions in their navigation systems since the apparent jamming of satellite signals by North Korea last week, reported 'Safety4Sea'. According to the Coast Guard in Incheon, west of Seoul, a total of 122 ships were affected by the disruption to Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. Among the vessels were eight patrol boats belonging to the Coast Guard, a passenger liner carrying 387 people and a petrol products carrier. Fishing boats operating near the tense western maritime border with North Korea also reported errors in their navigation systems, although none of them led to accidents, Coast Guard officials said.
