German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has decided to buy six MKS-180 multi-role warships instead of putting off a decision on two of those ships until 2030, her spokesman said on Monday. The ministry decided last October to delay a tender for four warships, which was valued at 4 billion euros ($4.24 billion), to ensure that quality standards were met. A decision on two extra warships had initially been planned in 2030. "The need is there. Now the minister has decided to buy all six of the required MKS-180 ships," the spokesman said, without providing a new cost estimate for the programme. The new ships, to be delivered from 2023, will be used for attacking targets on land and underwater, as well as providing aerial protection to other vessels.

Canadian shipyard Davie said it has secured a contract for the upgrade and refit of Canada’s heaviest icebreaker, 50-year-old CCGS Louis St Laurent. The $14 million program, part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s multi-year maintenance plan, will mark the return of the CCGS Louis St Laurent to Davie in February 2017. According to a representative of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, CCGS Louis St Laurent and its hull are in good condition, and the refit work set to take place from February 16 to June 23 has been commissioned to extend the life of the vessel and maintain its reliability.

According to German Ambassador Julius Georg Luy, one submarine was delivered to Egypt on December 10 while two others are awaiting delivery from Germany. The ship, the S41, is the first-of-class 209/1400 vessel and took to water earlier this month during a ceremony in Kiel attended by Vice Adm. Rainer Brinkmann, Deputy Chief of Staff of the German navy, the mayor of Kiel, and Egyptian officials. The submarines are being built in the northern coastal city of Kiel, which is famed for its ship-building and last week exported the fifth of six new ThyssenKrupp vessels bound for Israel. The first two of the four submarines are thought to have been ordered in 2011, though the deal only became public in August 2012 following statements by Egyptian Rear Admiral Osama Ahmed al-Jundi.

Kongsberg Maritime has received DNV-GL certification for three of its latest engine room simulator models designed to provide in-depth training on the K-Sim Engine simulator platform. The DNV GL-ST-033:2014-08 Maritime Simulator Systems certification, which is based on the on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12, was given to the DE88 Oil Rig, DE66 Drill Ship and M42 AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug & Supply) K-Sim Engine models in June 2015. Germany is hopeful in bagging multi-billion-dollar Indian submarine project for building six conventional submarines, says a PTI report. German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner said the P-75(I) project was under discussion and that the matter also came up during German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen's visit here last month. He said that the talk did not specify the modalities of the deal on whether this should be Business-to-Business or Government-to -Government. According to Michael his minister said that it was a clear sign that there is potential for cooperation in this field (defence) and also in the field of submarines. German defence major TKMS is offering India its HDW Class 214 vessel and is in talks with leading shipyards in the country for a tie-up.

The German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is visiting India lobbying for the purchase of German Stealth Submarines and European military hardware, say local media. Sources said that Ursula  talked of Eurofighter and [HDW] submarines in her discussions with Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. India reportedly asked Germany what all it could offer if a direct deal was struck between the two countries on next-generation submarines. The move comes after India recently announced to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. Israel bought four German-made corvette warships on Monday to help secure its Mediterranean gas rigs, with Berlin heavily subsidizing the deal, Israel's Defence Ministry said on Monday. The ships, worth 430 million euros ($480 million), will be built by Thyssen Krupp and delivered within five years, providing significantly more fire power to Israel's navy. The German government will pay 115 million euros towards the cost. As part of its atonement for the Nazi Holocaust, Germany is committed to Israel's security and has often helped pay in the past for the cost of military equipment such as submarines. Thyssen Krupp also committed to buy 700 million shekels ($181 million) worth of Israeli goods under the contract.

Defence and security company Saab's acquisition of the Swedish shipyard Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS, formerly Kockums) has now been completed. The acquisition strengthens Saab's position as a comprehensive supplier of naval military systems. The required decisions and approvals for Saab's acquisition of TKMS have now been granted. The company will become a business unit within Saab's business area Security and Defence Solutions. The business unit is named Saab Kockums. Saab expects operations will continue to be carried out primarily in Malmö, Karlskrona and Muskö. In June, Saab and FMV signed a letter of intent regarding the Swedish armed forces' underwater capabilities.

Although the well-known Finnish company Wärtsilä has a very long history, it was founded in 1834, the diesel engine era begins when the company signs a license agreement with Friedrich Krupp Germania Werft AG in Germany. The first diesel engine sees the light of day in Turku in November 1942. From there on Wärtsilä passed a number of rapid expansions in all fields of products. Some of the products stayed and some disappeared. The concentration of being a full solution provider for the maritime industry started in the early 2000’s after lots of talks with potential customers worldwide.

A R140-million, general bulk ship-loader installed at Richards Bay in Transnet Port Terminal’s (TPT) R33-billion Market Demand Strategy (MDS) investment programme. Custom-built to complement the terminal’s operational envelope, the loader was designed in Austria and built in China, however South African engineering company SANDVIK has managed its entire procurement. The loader's capacity is a guaranteed 2500 tons per hour (tph) at a bulk density of 1.9 tons per cubic meter (t/m3).

'INS Rahav', the Israeli Navy's 5th Dolphin-class submarine, inaugurated at Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems in Kiel, Germany. The new submarine  was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy Rear Adm. Ram Rothberg, Director-General of the Ministry of Defense Maj. Gen. (Res.) Ehud Shani and a delegation of Israeli and German officials. The INS Rahav was purchased after an extensive development and acquisition process led by the Ministry of Defense's Procurement and Production Directorate in cooperation with the Israeli Navy.

German shipbuilders concentrated in 2012 on building cruise ships, megayachts, freight ferries and additional high-value, specialty ships. In total, nine German shipyards across 12 shipbuilding sites supplied 21 sea going ships with a total tonnage of 473,700.

Veteran ocean voyager Dona Amélia completes refit.   The classic 71 m LOA, 1929-built gentleman's motor yacht Dona Amélia, recently departed Falmouth, UK after completion of a four-month refit at Pendennis. Works included routine maintenance (engineering survey, service and renovation of her original 1928 Krupp Germania Werft main Engines, overhaul of her generators, AC, water makers, thrusters, hydraulics, windlass).
