Maersk Tankers, Mitsui Order Up to 10 Very Large Ammonia Carriers

Maersk Tankers confirmed an order for up to 10 very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) has been placed with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Korea. Mitsui & Co., Ltd. will join as a co-investor in the first four vessels. The vessels will be operated by Maersk Tankers.The 93,000 cbm newbuilds will be among the largest ammonia carriers in operation, capable of carrying a full cargo of ammonia. HYON, Mitsui Enter Hydrogen Bunkering Collaboration

Oslo-based hydrogen bunkering company HYON has entered a collaboration agreement with Japanese trading and investment company Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui). The two companies said they were looking into business opportunities related to creating hydrogen fueling infrastructure in Europe, Asia anywhere else where there is a possibility for hydrogen demand. Mitsui, which has a diversified portfolio of business in various sectors, including shipping, offshore development, mobility, infrastructure, chemicals and energy, will make a financial and strategic investment in HYON as part of the deal.

Cenotaph Honoring Hirano Maru Sailors

On October 4, an unveiling ceremony was held in Wales, U.K., for a cenotaph honoring the sailors of Hirano Maru, a cargo-passenger ship sunk by a German U-boat exactly 100 years ago on October 4, 1918, a month before the armistice.Keiji Kubota, executive vice president, chief operating officer of NYK Group Europe Ltd. attended the event and offered his deepest compassion for the repose of the souls of all those who perished, and his gratitude to a local maritime volunteer group for its efforts to establish the cenotaph to convey the tragedy of war and honor the victims.Hirano Maru was delivered in 1908, and began a cargo-passenger service afterward between Yokohama and Liverpool.

Water-Treatment Companies Searched Over Bid-rigging

More than 10 major water-treatment plant makers, including Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., were searched Tuesday by the Fair Trade Commission on suspicion of repeatedly rigging bids for contracts from local governments, as reported by the Japan Times. Also raided were Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., JFE Engineering Corp., Kubota Corp., Ebara Corp., Hitachi Zosen Corp., Takuma Co. and Ataka Construction and Engineering Co. Most of the companies confirmed they were being searched by the antimonopoly watchdog but declined comment on the reason. The firms are suspected of conspiring to select bid winners and fix bid prices for contracts for building water-treatment plants…
