Nexans said construction has started on its new cable-laying vessel for submarine HV cable systems installation. Bamburi Cement's pretax profit slumped 28 percent to 2.3 billion shillings ($26.20 million) in the first half of 2014, the company said on Thursday, as it outlined plans to profit from Kenya's ambitious infrastructure spending plans. Controlled by French firm Lafarge SA, Bamburi is the biggest cement maker in east Africa's largest economy, where a construction boom driven by infrastructure projects and real estate has helped boost demand for cement. "We are optimistic that the business environment will progressively improve in the second half of the year," the company said in a statement, citing upcoming infrastructure projects in Kenya. Bamburi said it expects Kenya's planned infrastructure projects, including roads, railways and a new Indian Ocean port in Lamu, to improve sales.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a release advising residents of Alpena, Mich., that the commercial tug Manitou is scheduled to break ice in the Alpena Harbor near the LaFarge facility, beginning Wednesday afternoon. The ice-breaking operation does not involve a Coast Guard icebreaker; nonetheless, the Coast Guard is advising residents and visitors that any ice in the area may be particularly unstable and dangerous. Ice fishermen are asked to remove their ice shacks and equipment from these areas. All transit times and locations are subject to change based on weather conditions. According to the Coast Guard, all efforts are being made to limit the impact on winter activities on the ice, however the Coast Guard advises everyone to stay clear of this area. uscgnews.com

At present Signum say they are aware of at least twenty cases over the past eighteen months. The nature of the frauds are that non-existent cargo is offered to ship owners / managers at attractive rates, generally at a time when their vessel is 'spot' i.e. at a port without a cargo. The type of cargo offered varies but the favourites are cement, boilers and phosphate. The terms are always 'Liner In' meaning that the owner must pay up front for any stevedore and berthing costs.

The Great Lakes Towing Company has completed a contract with American International Line to deliver six FRP tanks to Alpena, Michigan. The tanks were shipped aboard the M/V Copenhagen which sailed from India. The vessel arrived at the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority Dock on Tuesday, October 23. It was there that the tanks were then loaded onto a barge. The Great Lakes Towing Company tug OHIO towed the barge from Cleveland, Ohio to Alpena, Michigan where the tanks were delivered to Lafarge Corporation.

Bourbon announced that its subsidiary Setaf SA has signed a $545m sale agreement for 16 bulk carriers with U.S. group Genco Shipping and Trading Ltd. The closing is expected by end of July 2010. “As a shipowner, we are a pragmatic company, and we seized an opportunity. Bourbon's third-quarter revenues came to 246.8 million euros, up 3.1% compared with the same period in 2008 (-2.8% at constant exchange rates), due to satisfactory growth in the Offshore Division which offset a sharp decline in the Bulk Division. In the first nine months of the year, Bourbon posted revenue growth of 8.3%, the increase being stronger in the early months of the year, while revenues were virtually stable at constant exchange rates. The value of the dollar strengthened by 11% during the period, at 1.37 dollar/euro compared with 1.52 for the same period in 2008. The Offshore Division recorded satisfactory third-quarter growth of 16.6% (9.6% at constant exchange rates), with revenues totaling 207.6 million euros versus 178 million euros for the same period in 2008.

Lafarge dedicated a new articulated tug-barge (ATB) on June 5 as the latest addition to its Great Lakes fleet. The Samuel de Champlain tug and Innovation barge were built and are owned by American Transport Leasing Inc., a subsidiary of Lafarge. The new vessel will transport cement and cementitious materials among 17 Lafarge facilities throughout the Great Lakes, including its terminal on the Cleveland waterfront. The articulated design represents a significant advance over conventional tugs and barges. The tug fits into a notch at the stern of the barge, where hydraulic connections allow them to dip and rise independently. The design makes the vessel more maneuverable than conventional tug-barge combinations, especially in adverse weather conditions.
