Wärtsilä Donates Engine to Texas A&M University

Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy. In addition to the equipment, Wärtsilä will also offer engine training to the Texas A&M Galveston engineering professors through the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Wärtsilä 3C Integrate All Ship Controls

Wärtsilä launched its Wärtsilä Communication and Control Centre (Wärtsilä 3C) solution at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg, Germany on 7 September. Wärtsilä 3C is the first system to integrate the entire vessel's control into one solution, the company said. With the introduction of Wärtsilä 3C, Wärtsilä's expertise in integrating its own products and systems, such as automation, propulsion and engines, with other operationally relevant equipment and systems to obtain a truly fully integrated solution, isn highlighted.

Wärtsilä Expands in Panama

Wärtsilä, a provider of power plant and ship power solutions and services, opened new offices and a workshop in Panama. Located in the International Business Park of Panama Pacifico, the new facilities are intended to meet growing market demand from customers in the area. The new workshop enables Wärtsilä to offer a wide range of services for engines, electrical and automation systems, propellers and thrusters, and to provide reconditioning services. "Panama's strategic importance as one of Latin America's largest logistics centres and as a major area for ship servicing will grow in importance along with the expansion of the Panama Canal," said Markku Aspholm, General Manager, Wärtsilä in Panama.

Wärtsilä Powers Polar Supply & Research Vessel

Wärtsilä has signed a contract with the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Rauma, Finland, to deliver four Wärtsilä 32 engines for a Polar Supply and Research Vessel. The owner of the vessel will be the Republic of South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs, and it will be operated by SMIT Amandla Marine, of South Africa. The vessel's crew will be trained at the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy in Turku, Finland. "This vessel order is one of the biggest single trade agreements ever between Finnish industry and South Africa, and we hope it will lead to additional business.

Odfjell's Seafarers Receive Competence and Career Management Program

Following the recent launch of Wärtsilä's Land and Sea Academy (WLSA) for training all categories of seafarers to today's high skills and competency needs; Wärtsilä is pleased to announce its first major seafarer competence and career management development contract. The specialized chemical logistics provider, Odfjell ASA has signed a four-year contract with WLSA to develop and implement comprehensive training and career path solutions for their seafarers. WLSA will provide Learn@Sea(TM) service which will enable Odfjell to utilize state-of-the-art competence management infrastructure and advanced training logistics support.
