Fairbanks Morse Wins Contract to Supply Main Engines for LPD 31

U.S.-based Fairbanks Morse said it has been awarded a purchase order by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) to build and deliver the four main propulsion diesel engines that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest San Antonio Class Landing Platform/Dock (LPD) ship, LPD 31. The ship is the second of 13 in the LPD Flight II class of ships.The four sequentially turbocharged 16-cylinder FM | Colt-Pielstick PC 2.5 diesel engines feature common rail fuel injection technology and will deliver over 31 MW of propulsion power.

HII Wins $1.47bln Defense Contract

America's largest military shipbuilding company Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has been awarded a $1.47 billion U.S. defense contract for construction of Landing Platform Dock 30, an amphibious warfare ship.The ship will be the 14th in the San Antonio class and the first Flight II LPD, said a release from the American Fortune 500 shipbuilder.“Ingalls looks forward to continuing our strong legacy of providing the men and women of our naval forces with the capable and survivable warships they need and deserve,” said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias.“The LPD Flight II builds upon the significant investment that has been made in this platform to improve the capability and flexibility of our deployed Navy-Marine Corps team.

Fincantieri Cuts Steel for Qatar OPV

The largest shipbuilder in Europe Fincantieri said that the steel cutting ceremony of the first patrol vessel (OPV - Offshore Patrol Vessel)ordered Qatari Ministry of Defence within the national naval acquisition program, took place yesterday (February 27) at the Muggiano (La Spezia) yard.The contract, amounting for Fincantieri to approximately 4 billion euros, envisages the supply of seven surface vessels, of which four corvettes, one amphibious vessel (LPD - Landing Platform Dock), and two patrol vessels (OPV - Offshore Patrol Vessel) as well as support services in Qatar for further 10 years after the delivery of the vessels.All the units will be entirely built in Fincantieri Italian shipyards.The first patrol vessel…

Fincantieri Begins Building First Corvette for Qatar

A steel cutting ceremony for the first “Doha” class corvette ordered from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defense within the national naval acquisition program, took place today at the Italian shipbuilder’s Muggiano, La Spezia yard.The flexible ship will be capable of fulfilling different kinds of tasks, from surveillance with sea rescue capacities to being a fighting vessel. It is designed consistent with the RINAMIL rules and will be about 107 meters long, 14.70 meters wide, with a maximum speed of 28 knots.

Fairbanks Morse said it has been awarded a contract to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power LPD 29, the U.S. Navy’s thirteenth San Antonio landing platform dock (LPD) class ship. Indian Navy's TROPEX 17 Gets Underway

The Indian Navy’s Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) got underway on 24 Jan 17. The month long exercise will have ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern Naval Commands, as also assets from the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard exercising together. The exercise is being conducted off the Western Seaboard. The last edition of the exercise was conducted in January 2015. Foreign Navies Descend on Sydney

Six ships from four navies arrived at Garden Island, Sydney in early November, creating a buzz on the harbour. The visits came ahead of the Royal New Zealand International Naval Review, which will take place in Auckland later this month. Indonesian Navy ship KRI Banda Aceh, a Makassar class landing platform dock was the first to arrive in Sydney. Chilean Navy tall ship Buque Escuela Esmeralda followed a few days later. The sail training ship, which is undertaking her 61st training cruise, was welcomed to Sydney with a 3 inch gun salute from the cannon positioned near the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre. She was escorted by a fleet of vessels including local tall ships Southern Swan, South Passage and James Craig and a fire tug.

Fincantieri to Build Qatari Naval Ships

Fincantieri and the Qatari Ministry of Defense have signed a contract in Rome today for the construction of seven new generation units included in the national naval acquisition program. The signing took place between the Commander of Qatar Emiri Naval Forces, Staff Major General Mohammed Nasser Al Mohannadi and the CEO of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono, in the presence of the Ministers of Defense of the two countries, Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah and Roberta Pinotti. BWTS Refit for Netherlands Naval Vessels

The Defense Material Organization has awarded three contracts to Goltens Worldwide’s Green Technologies business unit for the engineering and turnkey installation of sixteen Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) on 10 Naval vessels. An official signing ceremony was held May 25 at the Defense Material Organization in The Hague whereby Captain RNLN J. F. Kwak, Head Projects Procurement Division, officially signed the contract on behalf of the Ministry of Defense. M. C. Turkish LPD Comes into Effect

Turkey has launched the building phase of its amphibious landing platform dock (LPD) warship for the Turkish Naval Forces with a ceremony on April 30, says Hurriyet. Last year, the Turkish government announced it signed a nearly $ 1 billion deal with a local shipyard to produce the country's first LPD. Turkey's procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), said SSM and Sedef, a Turkish shipyard, agreed to pen the deal after contract negotiations. Turkish companies, including Aselsan and Havelsan, will produce and install several parts of the ship’s components, including armaments, electronics and communications systems. A Spanish company, Navantia, will help in designing the ship.

Rigid hulled inflatable boats (RIBs) have come a long way since their initial development in the United Kingdom in the late 1960s. Long noted for their stability and safety in turbulent seas, they have found applications in rescue work and military settings. Willard Marine, Inc. of Anaheim, Calif. has a long history of conventional hulls and RIBs. They currently produce a variety of models and sizes of RIBs from 4.9-meters up to 11.07. As are all the firm’s RIBs, the SEA FORCE 1100 is available with either fiberglass or aluminum deep-V hulls.

Turkey Signs Contract for Light Career

The Turkish shipyard SEDEF has signed a contract with the Turkey's procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) for the design and construction of Landing Platform Dock (LPD) for the Turkish Navy. The 231-meter landing platform dock that is capable of carrying 1,000 personnel. Mujdat Uludag, a senior official at SSM, said the project is expected to end in 2021. Uludağ noted the capabilities of the Turkish Naval Forces will be advanced with this LPD, adding the warship would be able to sail in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas. “If needed, the warship can also sail in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans,” he said. The contract covers design and construction of an LPD ship based on the Spanish Navy's Navantia designed and built LHD Juan Carlos I.

Virginia-Class Submarine Named USS Oregon

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony to announce that SSN 793, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Oregon. During a ceremony held at the Battleship Oregon Memorial in Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Mabus announced the submarine will be named to honor the long-standing history its namesake state has had with the Navy. Mabus also recognized USS Portland (LPD 27) which he named last year in honor of Oregon’s largest city. “Sailors and Marines, like the citizens of Oregon throughout history, are pioneers. They are explorers who are looking willingly toward the unknown, wanting to know what is out over the horizon,” said Mabus. Mabus told the crowd SSN 793 will be the third naval ship to bear the name Oregon.

Kalaat Beni-Abbes Delivered at Muggiano Shipyard

The delivery ceremony of new amphibious vessel for the Algerian Navy  was held today at the Muggiano shipyard (in La Spezia). The "Kalaat Beni-Abbes" (from the name of a place in the north of the country, which in Arabic means fort of the sons of Abbes), a vessel commissioned in 2011 by the Ministry of Defence of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria from Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a company controlled by Fincantieri in which Selex ES also holds an interest, will serve as the national Navy's new flagship. Marine Task Force Conclude West Africa Engagements

An International Marine Task Force comprised of U.S., U.K., Dutch and Spanish Marine units disembarked from the Royal Netherlands Navy landing platform dock HNLMS Rotterdam (L800) after concluding a comprehensive set of security-enhancing activities as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS), Nov. 10. Over the course of three months, Rotterdam conducted five capability-enhancing engagements in support of the APS program in Senegal, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. Rotterdam Sailors, Dutch mobile training teams and the International Marine Task Force worked with more than 1,087 maritime professionals in skills ranging from amphibious training, port security, and martial arts to fishery conferences, coxswain training and maritime law.

Major China Shipbuilder Seeks Military Orders

Chinese shipbuilding giant, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) makes debut at Malaysia defense show. The China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) recently made its debut in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia, reports Xinhua. The company brought its latest product models, including a submarine, landing platform dock and frigate, to the four-day show. Xu Ziqiu, general manager of China Shipbuilding and Offshore International, the international marketing and sales arm of CSIC Xu admitted the shipbuilding industry was not yet fully recovered from the global financial crisis, and hence his company was interested in tapping the global market. Northrop Grumman to Build Amphibious Vessel

Northrop Grumman Corp. recently won a $1b contract from the U.S. Navy to build the ninth vessel of LPD-17 Class of amphibious transport ships. Northrop Grumman is building ships for the $13.5b Navy program at its facilities in Avondale, La., and Pascagoula, Miss. The LPD-17s, which stand for Landing Platform Dock, are amphibious assault vessels. Work on the latest ship will be performed at Avondale, near New Orleans, and in Pascagoula and is expected to be completed in 2011.

The Royal Thai Navy has officially received the first Endurance-class landing platform dock ship, HTMS Angthong (LPD-791) at Laem Thien Port, Sattahip naval base in Chon Buri, Thailand. ST Engineering $200m Contract

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced that its marine arm, Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd (ST Marine), has secured a contract in a basket of currencies amounting to about S$200m, to design and build a 141m Landing Platform Dock (LPD), two 23m Landing Craft Mechanised (LCM) and two 13m Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP), for a navy in the Asia Pacific region. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid 2009 and delivery is planned for in 2H 2012. AMSC, Northrop Grumman Superconductor

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), an  energy technologies company, and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) announced the successful completion of full-power testing of the world’s first 36.5 megawatt (49,000 horsepower) high temperature superconductor (HTS) ship propulsion motor at the U.S. Navy’s Integrated Power System Land-Based Test Site in Philadelphia. This is the first successful fullpower test of an electric propulsion motor sized for a large Navy combatant and, at 36.5 megawatts, doubled the Navy’s power rating test record. This system was designed and built under a contract from the Office of Naval Research to demonstrate the efficacy of HTS motors as the primary propulsion technology for future Navy all-electric ships and submarines.
