IMI, Hyundai Heavy Industries Expanding Shipbuilding Partnership

International Maritime Industries (IMI), the largest shipyard in the MENA region, has expanded its partnership with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) through a technical service agreement to further enhance its shipbuilding capabilities.Under the agreement, HHI will provide technical assistance and consulting services in Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC) engineering to IMI, reflecting its commitment to supporting the development of IMI’s shipbuilding capabilities and engineering services since its launch in 2017.The agreement was signed by Dr.

S.Korea Gov't Calls on Strikers to End 'illegal' Siege of Daewoo Shipyard

The South Korean government on Monday called on striking workers at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to end their month-long siege of a dock at the company's biggest shipyard, which has paralyzed production and is delaying delivery of new vessels.Finance Minister Choo Kyung-ho called the occupation "outright illegal" and pledged a "stern response based on law and order."The shipyard near the city of Geoje, off the country's south coast, is one of the world's largest.

DSIC Hands Over New VLCC to China Merchants Steamship

A 300,000-ton very large crude carrier (VLCC) built by DSIC, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, for China Merchants Steamship was named and delivered on June 18.New Valor is the fourth ship in the series of six new-generation energy-saving and environmentally friendly VLCCs built by DSIC for China Merchants Shipping, and also the 23rd 300,000-ton super-large crude oil carrier delivered by DSIC to China Merchants Shipping.The ship has a total length of 333 meters, a width of 60 meters and a depth of 30 meters.

TOP Ships Takes Delivery of Supertanker M/T Legio X Equestris

Tanker operator TOP Ships said Wednesday it had taken delivery of the "very high specification" scrubber fitted, 300,000 dwt newbuilding Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC) vessel M/T Legio X Equestris.Built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea, the vessel is gearing up to start its previously announced time charter in a few days.The charter is with an unnamed major oil trader. The contract is for three years with two yearly extensions at the charterer’s option.

NYK VLCC Tateshina Designed to Be 23% More Energy Efficient

The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Tateshina, owned by NYK, was delivered on November 8, 2021, built at Nantong COSCO KHI Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) in China.According to the owner, several enhancements have been incorporated on Tateshina to help improve performance and fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, including a modified bow shape to help reduce wave resistance. This ship is also equipped low-friction paint, high-efficiency large-diameter propellers, and ladder fins that regulate the water flow at the stern and reduce energy loss.

Chevron Oil Cargo Tangled in US' Venezuela Sanctions

Chevron Corp crude oil cargo has become embroiled in U.S. sanctions on shipping companies for violating restrictions on doing business with Venezuela, the company confirmed on Friday.Adamant Maritime Ltd, the owner of very large crude-oil carrier (VLCC) Seahero was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Treasury on Tuesday for carrying a Venezuelan cargo in February. The vessel currently is heading to Asia after recently stopping in Trinidad and Tobago, according to vessel tracking data.The tanker on short term charter and "performing a voyage that is not related to Venezuela," Chevron spokesman Ray Fohr said. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Delivers Green VLCC

Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) has completed building a scrubber-equipped Very Large Crude oil Carrier (VLCC), the first of two ships ordered by Greek shipowner Almi Tankers in August 2016, reported the Pulse. The affiliate with South Korea's largest shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) said that the VLCC is fitted with an exhaust gas cleaning system that can meet stricter restrictions on sulphur oxide emissions that will come into force in 2020. New Ship Building Orders for Korean Yards

South Korean shipyards emerged on top for new orders in April, Business Korea reported quoting industry data. The global total amount of new shipbuilding orders reached 750,000 CGT last month and 340,000 CGT and 260,000 CGT went to South Korean and Chinese shipbuilders, respectively. Japanese shipyard orders came to nil. In terms of numbers, Korean shipyards clinched new orders to build 12 ships. South Korea took the largest portion of very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) orders placed in quantity early last month, said the report. In the January-April period, South Korean shipyards secured 1.23 million CGTs worth of new orders to build 34 ships. China took the top slot with 1.43 million CGTs, or 78 ships, says HongKong Standard.

NYK Conducts Crisis-response Drill on VLCC

On October 15 as part of the company’s Remember Naka-no-Se Campaign,* NYK conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious accident occurring on an NYK-owned VLCC (very large crude-oil carrier). Cooperation from the Maritime Bureau within Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), in addition to the Japan Coast Guard and the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center, enabled this drill to be realistic and practical. During the drill, NYK’s crisis-management headquarters simulated a press conference and timely press releases, and reconfirmed the importance of immediate and correct information disclosure to the public. A summary of the drill is provided below. A blackout occurred on a VLCC while the ship was sailing in Tokyo Bay.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Revises Business Outlook

SCI takes Delivery of VLCC "Desh Vibhor"

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) accepted delivery of a Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC) on 28 March, 2015. The vessel has been named “Desh Vibhor”. The vessel was ordered with Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., China during November 2010. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 165,319 tonnes and deadweight of 316,634 tonnes at scantling draft. The vessel has been classed with IRS and LRS and has been built to comply with latest international regulations. Acquisition of this vessel is in line with SCI’s strategy of maintaining a modern and young fleet of vessels. With addition of this vessel, SCI’s fleet strength has increased to 69 vessels of 3.29 million GT and 5.89 million dwt.

MOL YoY Q1 2014 Profit Slips, but Dividend Planned

"I would like to report our business results for the first quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2014 (April 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014). During the first three months of FY2014, while geopolitical risks such as political strife in Ukraine and Iraq raised concerns of a spike in crude oil prices, moderate recoveries in the United States and Europe drove global economic growth. Looking at maritime shipping markets, a continuing surplus of dry bulk vessels kept that sector weak overall. The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) market slumped mainly as a result of a decline in demand for crude oil shipments due to scheduled periodic maintenance at East Asian refineries. On the other hand, the LPG carrier market was strong.

MOL Achieves 2013 Profitability Goal

The president of Mitsui O.S.K. Combined with the continuing weaker yen and falling bunker prices, we saw a significant year-on-year improvement in profitability, and successfully achieved the main theme set forth in the Single-year Management Plan RISE2013 – Achieve profitability in FY2013 to make it the first year of MOL’s new growth stage. Looking at maritime shipping market conditions, despite signs of a year-on-year recovery, the environment remained difficult overall. In the dry bulker market, on the vessel supply front the number of new vessel deliveries showed a substantial year-on-year decline. On the cargo demand front, cargo volumes were brisk overall and shipment volumes of iron ore from Western Australia hit a record high.

BWTS Fitting on Japanese VLCC a First

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) plan to install a ballast water treatment system on an in-service very large crude oil carrier (VLCC). This will be the first such onboard system installed by any Japanese shipowner on an existing VLCC. The company chose the JFE Ballast Ace system developed by JFE Engineering Corporation. The installation will take place while the vessel is docked from March through April. Ballast water discharged while loading/discharging cargo carries marine organisms around the world and can have a negative impact on marine ecosystems and biodiversity.

MOL Installs Ballast Water Treatment System on VLCC

In front of the VLCC Libra Trader, which recently had a new ballast water treatment system installed, representatives of the vessel’s management company, MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd., and the shipyard pose for a commemorative shot.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced completion of work to install a ballast water treatment system on the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Libra Trader at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. On January 10, the company announced plans to install the system on a VLCC ahead of IMO installation compulsion. MOL is the first Japanese shipping company to install such a system for existing VLCC. Keppel Shipyard has timely delivered the vessel as committed and Libra Trader has already returned to service, and the ballast water treatment system will be tested and adjusted during operation.

Hyundai Heavy Delivers VLCC with Electrolysis BW System

On Jan. 10, Hyundai Heavy Industries handed over a 317,000DWT VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) to Oman Shipping Company (OSC). The ship, measuring 1,093 ft in length, 197 ft in height and 99.7 ft in depth, is the first VLCC with the new electrolysis ballast water treatment system that can treat as much as 100,000 ton ballast water. Ballast water is sea water used to stabilize hull balance when unloading cargo, and to maintain optimal vessel speed. The seawater can contain bacteria, local plankton, mud and sand from the unloading port where the ballast water has been taken in.

Double Hull Tanker Delivered For Duty

Exxon Mobil Corporation announced that the M/T Hawk , a new double-hull very large crude oil carrier (9VLCC), was delivered for leasing to a Trust established by MARCARE Shipping Co., a joint shipping venture among subsidiaries of ExxonMobil, the Onassis Group and Petros J. Goulandris Sons Group. The Hawk, the first of two sister vessels to be leased to MARCARE, will be chartered by International Marine Transportation Limited (IMT), a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation based in the UK. The joint venture, in which all three partners hold an equal share, was formed in December 1998. The ship was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and delivered at a naming ceremony today at Hyundai's Ulsan, Korea shipyard, the world's largest yard. The 307,000 dwt Hawk is 1,100 ft. (335 m) long, 190 ft.

HHI Names Two Newbuilding VLCC's

Hyundai Heavy Greets New Year with the Simultaneous Naming Ceremony of Two 318,000 DWT VLCC. Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s biggest shipbuilder, hailed the New Year by naming two 318,000 DWT VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) for an Indian shipping line, GESCO today. In the simultaneous naming ceremony, the vessels were named Maneklal Ujamshi Sheth and Ardeshir HBhiwandiwalla, after the former owner and the founder of GESCO respectively. Maneklal Ujamshi Sheth was delivered today and Ardeshir HBhiwandiwalla is scheduled to be delivered in the middle of February this year. Starting with the ships featuring 319m in length, 60m in width, and 30m in depth with service speed of 16.3 knots, Hyundai Heavy plans to deliver 93 ships this year.

Chartered VLCC Makes First Kawasaki Port Call

The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) 'Takamatsu Maru' has arrived at the Kawasaki refinery of TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. The 158,000 dwt tankship was chartered by TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. from NYK Lines, after the company purchased virtually all of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s Japan business. The vessel was built by IHI Marine United Inc. and delivered in June, 2012. TonenGeneral Sekiyu has also assumed the charters of two additional VLCCs — Taiga and Tamba — bringing to three the number of vessels currently chartered by the company from NYK.
