Latsco Inks LNG Carrier Maintenance Deal with Wärtsilä
Greece-based Latsco LNG Marine Management has signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Wärtsilä covering the main engines for two large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, the Hellas Diana and the Hellas Athina.The deal signed in March 2021 covers two new vessels built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard in South Korea. They are 297 meters in length and have a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. The Hellas Diana entered service at the end of March this year, and the Hellas Athina is scheduled to enter service in September.
LPG Carrier Makes First Commercial Transit through Expanded Panama Canal
On June 27, the expanded Panama Canal opened for commercial transit, and Lycaste Peace, a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier operated by NYK, was the first vessel to complete a commercial passage through the new locks. On June 26, the Panama Canal Authority held an inauguration ceremony for the expanded canal. The maximum dimensions of a vessel transiting the canal have been expanded to 366 meters in overall length, 49 meters in breadth, and 15.2 meters of draft. In 1914, the NYK-operated Tokushima Maru was the first Japanese-flagged vessel to pass through the canal, and over the 100-plus years since then, NYK and the Republic of Panama have maintained an important partnership. First LPG Carrier Order for MHI Shipbuilding
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), announced it has received an order from Astomos Energy Corporation for a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The order marks the very first to be received by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding since the company's launch on October 1. The LPG carrier on order is identical to the four vessels Astomos Energy has already ordered to MHI since 2013. According to the builder, the ship will provide a high level of energy-saving performance, flexibility to accommodate major LPG terminals around the globe and specifications suited to passage through the newly expanding Panama Canal. Completion and delivery are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018.

Tokyo-based Astomos Energy Corp has placed an order today with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The 83,000 cu m vessel marks their fourth such order with MHI since 2013, a company that also happens to be a 49 percent shareholder in Astomos Energy. Construction, as with the three previously ordered vessels, will be carried out at MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. Shipbuilders Focus on High-Value Vessels
South Korean shipbuilders are profiting more than ever from selling high-value units such as offshore plants and liquid gas carriers, according to a Korea Times report. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering has already won a record-high $7 billion in building orders this year. Such high performance was largely affected by the sales of four offshore oilrig units, which amounted to $1.9 billion in total. The company also has recorded steady sales of LNG carriers, capped with a $430-million order for a pair of LNG carriers from a Norwegian company last month. The LNG ship has become a lucrative business for shipbuilders, as a 145,000-cubic-meter carrier is now being sold for around $270 million, according to the report.
