My first visit in 2007 to the American Society of Naval Engineers’ (ASNE) Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC) was an eye-opener. Having built a naval architecture career with frigates, destroyers and other large naval and commercial ships, I was eager to learn of the smaller craft used by the U.S. Navy and other government and military bodies. As my flight into Norfolk, Va. descended over Chesapeake Bay, I gazed in amazement as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) raced toward Virginia Beach, slowed, glided up the beach and into its shore base.

Realizing the Promise of Brazil Shipbuilding

If and when Brazil gets its maritime act together, oh what a shipbuilding market force it could be. The modern Brazilian shipbuilding industry was established in the 1960s, induced by a broad and effective governmental policy. The 1960s and 1970s saw the rise of the merchant marine and shipbuilding industry in Brazil. The creation of the “Merchant Marine Fund” and the “Tax for the Merchant Marine Renewal,” in 1958, together with other specific targets set by the government at that time, made investments available to the shipbuilding industry and for the development of the merchant marine in general. Welcome The Little Black Box

There is a groundswell of commitment for mandating the installation of "black boxes" aboard ships, so that in the in the unlikely case of a disaster, history will not repeat itself. At an estimated cost of $75,000 to $150,000 per ship, however, safety will not come cheaply. If it has not already, in a few years time the name Erika will conjure many of the same emotions and financial achings as the name Valdez. The tanker that broke up and sank off the coast of France just prior to Christmas 1999 has resulted in a veritable groundswell of political and industry activity which will likely result in fundamental changes to the way in which ships — particularly those carrying oil products or hazardous materials — are outfitted and operated.

FR. Fassmer & Co.: Keeping It In The Family

Fassmer-Shipyard this year celebrates its 150th year in business, and the companies' chronology is literally a case study in the effective use of and evolution of marine materials. Founded as a one-man boatyard by Johann Faßmer in Bardenfelth in 1850 for the purpose of boat building, the company has evolved from a one-man shop producing wooden boats for hydraulic engineering and fishery to a dynamic medium-sized company, which today builds everything from a 177 ft. (54 m) fishing surveillance craft to a wide range of lifeboats, tenderboat and fast rescue boats for the cruise and ferry markets. Fassmer-Shipyard was literally built of wood, wooden boats that is, and the company served the aforementioned commercial market for its first 30 years admirably.
