Partners Aim to Advance Augmented Data in Ship Operations

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) said it is working with Laskaridis Shipping and smart tool provider METIS Cyberspace Technology on a pilot project to develop and apply a new BV SMART 3 Class notation covering the use of augmented data in ship operations.Modern ships increasingly use smart systems designed to improve their operational efficiency. As part of its strategy to support maritime digitalization, BV has developed a framework of SMART notations for ships which provide consistent and uniform standards for the ‘smart’ techniques used to monitor and improve fleet performance.

ECSA Presidency Handed Over to Panagiotis Laskaridis

European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) has held its Board of Directors’ meeting and Niels Smedegaard of Danish Shipping and CEO of DFDS handed over ECSA Presidency to Panagiotis Laskaridis, Member of the Board of the Union of Greek Shipowners and CEO of Laskaridis Shipping and CEO of Lavinia Corp. Panagiotis will start his two-year term as ECSA’s new President from January 2018. Smedegaard will remain Board Member representing Danish Shipping. “I am very pleased of this trust, and committed to focus the European shipping agenda on shipowning matters, work with stakeholders for an efficient, competitive and future oriented European shipowning community’’, Laskaridis said.

Dry Bulk Carrier Newbuilding Orders Surge

Dry bulk carrier newbuilding orders predominate among the contracts reported in the latest issue of the Clarkson Hellas S&P Weekly Bulletin. One order is reported by Clarkson Hellas in the larger dry sizes this week, with Foremost Maritime contracting two firm 180,000 DWT Capesize at Beihai Shipyard. Delivery of the first vessel is due in the later part of 2015, with the second due in the final quarter of 2016. In Japan, First Steamship are reported to have contracted a single 85,000 DWT post-panamax bulk carrier at Sasebo Heavy, due to deliver in 2016.
