After two RoRo and RoCon designs for CMN and BAHRI, naval architect Knud E. Hansen’s focus has moved into the reefer market. Knud E. J. Lauritzen Buys Cool Carriers

J. Lauritzen bought Cool Carriers AB for $35.4 million from Norwegian shipping group Leif Hoegh & Co. ASA, a step in consolidation of the reefer vessel market. "The acquisition will be financed through a capital injection of 215 million crowns ($25.5 million) from the parent company J. Lauritzen Holding," it said. Reefer vessels are equipped with refrigeration facilities to transport perishable foodstuffs. The takeover of the Swedish-based group, effective January 1, 2001, would create the world's leading specialized reefer vessel operator in a new company to be named Lauritzen Cool AB, it said. "With the establishment of Lauritzen Cool the first step towards the long sought-for consolidation of the global reefer market has now been taken," it said.

Eight modern vessels join LauritzenCool

The eight Polar vessels managed by Hamburg Sued will join the LauritzenCool fleet in December and January, including: Polar Argentina, Polar Brasil, Polar Chile, Polar Colombia, Polar Ecuador and Polar Uruguay, which were all built in 1992-93 and operate at a speed of 21 knots. Each also offers 529,369 cu. ft.; and 47 FEU on deck. Also joining the fleet are Polarstern and Polarlicht, both built in 1998 and offering 564,280 cu. ft. and 104 FEU on deck. These two also operate at 21 knots. LauritzenCool sprang out of the amalgamation of the two leading reefer operators Lauritzen Reefers and Cool Carriers, well known for their widespread global activities and strong customer orientation.
