Workshop Promotes Maritime Security Cooperation in Kenya
Kenyan officials involved in maritime law enforcement are taking part in a workshop and scenario-based simulation exercise in Mombassa, Kenya (31 January – 3 February). The International Maritime Organization (IMO)-led event will enhance inter-agency cooperation in the country and promote a whole of Government approach in dealing with maritime security challenges. The workshop, organized with the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), brings together key stakeholders in Kenya to discuss practical, concrete steps to ensure effective coordination in combating maritime crimes – through information sharing, unified command, and enhanced maritime domain awareness.

BSEE: Platform Accident Investigation Underway
Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement Update on Platform Fire Investigation. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) began an investigation early Friday morning into the explosion and fire aboard a production platform, operated by Black Elk Energy, approximately 18 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La. An investigation team was formed by BSEE shortly after the explosion and fire and is comprised of safety inspectors, engineers, safety management investigators, and law enforcement experts.
Search Suspended for Missing GofM Rig-fire Victims
The Coast Guard suspends the search for two missing crewmembers, following the Black Elk platform explosion and fire. US Coast Guard crews searched a 1,400 square-mile area in the Gulf of Mexico around Grand Isle for more than 32 hours in an effort to locate the two missing crewmembers. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has established a team to investigate Friday's explosion and fire. The seven-member investigative team includes safety inspectors, engineers, safety management investigators, and law enforcement experts. The investigation report will include recommendations for initiatives to prevent a similar accident in the future. Later owners of the rig stated that one body had been recovered by divers hired by the company.
