Mass. Maritime Holds Change of Command Ceremony
Massachusetts Maritime Academy conducted its annual regimental Change of Command Ceremony in conjunction with the celebration of National Maritime Day on Wednesday, May 24.The Change of Command Ceremony is both the symbolic and physical transfer of leadership responsibilities from the graduating senior class to members of the junior class. During the ceremony, held at the Clean Harbors Athletic Stadium on the Academy’s campus, the outgoing Regiment of Cadets Commander 1/C Abigail Pope of Falmouth, Mass., passed her responsibilities to 2/C Cole Francavilla of Stoneham, Mass.
Future Maritime Leaders Practice Policy Planning
Maritime law students in Malta have been introduced to key issues in maritime transport policy making in a seminar at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta (7-9 February). The event focused on the National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP) concept, which is being promoted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a good governance practice to guide planning, decision making and legislation in the maritime sector. IMO recently embarked on an initiative to provide training to interested IMO Member States in the development, adoption and updating of NMTPs, which are seen as key to a coordinated and integrated approach to maritime transport.

Seafarers’ Rights International (SRI) has again demonstrated its commitment to the shipping industry by welcoming the latest intake of high performing young graduates into this year’s SRI Legal Internship Scheme. The successful candidates hail from a diversity of countries across the globe - but all have in common a keen interest in the field of international law and seafarers’ rights, and a desire to succeed. “This year's programme is a departure from the traditional intern model", said Deirdre Fitzpatrick, founder and Executive Director of Seafarers’ Rights International.
Criminal Liability of the Mariner (and His Employer)

This trend is alarming not only because it targets both denizens of the wheelhouse and the executive suite alike, but because it relies upon criminal statutes that are out of step with traditional tenets of criminal law and employs prosecutorial tactics which often lead to the distortion of facts and the loss of attorney-client privileges. Recent cases provide a "word-to-the-wise" and at the same time cry out for Congressional remedy. As one might expect, oil pollution cases are by far the most attractive to prosecutors.
