U.S. Navy has relieved of duty a commander of a submarine training facility in San Diego citing a loss of confidence in his abilities."Capt. Steve Antcliff, commanding officer, Submarine Learning Center (SLC), relieved Cmdr. Jared Severson, commanding officer, Submarine Training Facility (STF) San Diego, of command on April 28.The relief is due to a loss of confidence in Severson’s ability to command based on the findings of a command investigation. The storied South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) complex in Brooklyn, N.Y. will be transformed into a major regional hub for offshore wind under a new agreement signed Thursday.Energy companies Equinor and bp said they reached a deal with terminal operator Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SSBMT) and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to transform the terminal into an offshore wind port for staging and assembling offshore wind technology components for the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind projects and for the growing U.S.

Norwegian energy firm Equinor on Tuesday announced the opening of the New York offshore wind project office, located in Sunset Park’s Industry City neighborhood near the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.The project office will serve as the hub for Equinor and BP's large-scale offshore wind operations in the region, including Empire Wind and Beacon Wind. "Together, Empire Wind 1 and 2 and Beacon Wind 1 are poised to provide 3.3 gigawatts of renewable power to New York, enough to power approximately 2 million homes.

U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil companies shut around 82 percent of oil production on Monday and evacuated personnel bracing for the impact of two tropical storms Marco and Laura.From operator reports, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said Monday that approximately 82.4 percent of oil production and 56.92 percent of the natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico had been shut-in. Minsk hosted today an official construction launch of Gazprom Center – a Gazprom Group-owned multi-purpose complex. Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus and Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee took part in the event. Situated at the corner of Nezavisimosti Avenue and Filimonova Street close to the National Library of Belarus, the new complex will consist of nine contemporary premises of various heights, designed to be integrated naturally into the surrounding metropolitan area and to complement the existing buildings nearby. A 36-floor building (189 meters high) – the heart of the architectural project – will be occupied by the Gazprom Transgaz Belarus staff and other Gazprom Group-owned companies in Minsk.

Webb Institute announced that Matthew R. Werner has been named Webb Institute’s next Academic Dean. Professor Werner, the American Bureau of Shipping Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, will begin his term on July 1, 2015. Professor Werner is an accomplished educator with extensive leadership and administrative experience. Professor Werner began his career in the ship design, construction, and operations fields and joined the Webb faculty in 2002. In 2010, he was designated Webb’s first American Bureau of Shipping Chair in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

The Maritime Training Academy announced the launch of its new diploma in maritime security today. The Surrey, UK-based distance learning center said the diploma in maritime security will commence April 1st, 2015 and will consist of 11 modules including ISPS code, Passenger Vessel Security, Superyacht and Private Yacht Security. It will cover preventative measures and security procedures as well as event responses. All students are required to successfully complete and pass the module assignments. Diploma students are also required to sit a final examination in either April or October 2016. There is also the opportunity to attend two tutorial seminars, one mid-way through the course and one immediately before the examination.

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College announced Friday that two student cadets, Julia Paxton of Sebastopol, California, and Brandon Baranyar of Fairfield, Connecticut, have been selected as recipients of the 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Paxton and Baranyar both are members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets, and both are scheduled to graduate from SUNY Maritime next week. In a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center last month, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher honored the more than 300 college students from campuses throughout the state, presenting 274 SUNY students with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, and 68 awards from Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society.

The SUNY Maritime College announce that it has been awarded $1.8 million in grants from the New York State Education Department (NYSED)as part of the federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. The College will receive two grants over the course of three years (2013-2015), to deliver after-school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment programs in two high schools in the Bronx: Banana Kelly and Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers. Only 125 grants were awarded in New York State and SUNY Maritime received two of them. The goal of the program is to create or expand community learning centers and provide academic enrichment and youth development opportunities for students attending schools that serve a high percentage of low-income families.

Volunteers from Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division are trading in their safety gear for school gear this summer at the STEM Summer of Innovation Academy. Helping students explore future careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields, NNS volunteers are working with Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) to get students excited about math and science. Hosted July 8 through Aug. 1, 2013 by the 21st Century Community Learning Center and Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy, the camp exposes rising 7th through 9th graders to different STEM topics through the help of local business volunteers. John Banks Sr., an electrical engineer at NNS, is helping students experience engineering in the classroom through building robots.

Fergus Ewing, the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism opened a new learning center this week which makes practical, classroom and eLearning training available to the regions North Sea oil and gas industry for the first time. James A. Watson IV, Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). Interior Secretary Ken Salazar Named Rear Admiral James A. Watson IV as New Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in November of 2011. BSEE was one of the two agencies to succeed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) on Oct. 1, 2011. Admiral Watson began as BSEE Director on December 1, 2011, and will succeed Michael R. Bromwich. Previously, Watson was better known to maritime stakeholders as the U.S.

Since 1999, when American Classic Voyages (AMCV) first announced its intention to construct two U.S.-flagged cruise ships that would be staffed by American officers and crew, the U.S. shipbuilding industry received a boost back into an area that it had not participated for almost 30 years — the cruise shipping market. Prior to the construction of the two vessels by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding, AMCV wanted to start making money right away — it purchased the 17-year-old ms Nieuw Amsterdam for $114.5 million from Holland America. AMCV then received an official notice from Congress that provided exemption from the Jones Act, thus allowing the U.S. Coast Guard to re-flag the foreign registered vessel.

United States Lines has launched a 1,212-passenger cruise ship, MS Patriot, newly emerged from a $21 million renovation and flying the U.S. flag recently departed for the first of its weekly cruises to five ports on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and "Big Island" of Hawaii. New ship features include a Hawaiian Destination Learning Center, innovative children's and teen's activity centers, and upgraded conference and meeting facilities. Recently in a christening ceremony reflecting both the heritage of Hawaii and the spirit of America, Maggie Inouye, wife of Senator Daniel Inouye, officially dedicated the ship. A gala benefiting five Hawaiian charities was also held on board.

With a snip of the scissors Oct. 25, Naval Submarine School (SubScol) welcomed the latest addition to its attack center trainer inventory, the Submarine Multi-Mission Team Trainer Phase (SMMTT) 3. SMMTT3 is a shore-based trainer for submarine combat control and sonar systems, and the latest version of attack centers to allow submarine crews to rehearse and execute tactical, at-sea missions, in a training environment. “SMMTT3 is a significant step forward in shore-based training," said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Haldeman, operations officer for SubScol’s Advanced Tactical Employment Training Department. Phase 3 of the Submarine Multi-Mission Team Trainer is the result of previous system evolution and technology improvements with a wide range of organizations partnering to make it a reality.

The AN/BLQ-10(V) Electronic Warfare Support (ES) System Operations and Maintenance Courses at the Naval Submarine School (NSS), Newport R.I, was recently upgraded, and attained its Ready for Training (RFT) milestone. The major upgrades, taking more than two years to complete, involved developing 109 Interactive Multi-Media Instruction (IMI) modules along with an AN/BLQ-10 display simulator; curriculum updates; the development of the system’s interactive electronic technical manual (IETM) that links with Authority Instructional Materials (AIM), and post-delivery preparation for NSS’s instructor-lead IMI courses. This effort provides the NSS’s ES warfare training with the Submarine Force’s latest Electronic Warfare training tools.
