Finances Very Strong; Steel Drives Tonnage Growth

The Port Commission Congratulates Newest Commissioners

PHA Signs Memorandum of Friendship & Trade Cooperation With Port of Marseille-Fos, Provence Promotion Economic Development Agency. Finances are very strong for August, Executive Director Len Waterworth shared in his report to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority at its monthly meeting today. "I am very pleased to announce that we had another $20 million+ month, that's four out of eight this year, extremely good," Waterworth said. Waterworth also reported August's net income of $11 million, up $7 million or 212 percent.

Port of Houston Records Upward Monthly Revenue

Monthly operating revenue exceeded $20 million again in July 2013. The achievement was high on a list of positives that Executive Director Len Waterworth shared in his report to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority at its recent monthly meeting. Dredging projects have also been put in hand. The Port Authority generated $21 million in July operating revenue, surpassing July 2012's performance by $1.4 million or 7 percent. Year-to-date operating revenue of $135 million increased 4 percent, or $6 million. The Port Authority first exceeded $20 million earlier this year.

Port of Houston Tonnage and Revenue Up

Tonnage is up this year at the Port of Houston Authority, with container tonnage through May up by 9%, Executive Director Len Waterworth reported at Tuesday's meeting of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. Waterworth also reported that May operating revenue was at an all-time high of $20 million, up 4% or $800,000. This marked the first time in Port Authority history that operating revenue has exceeded $20 million. Year-to-date operating revenue of $96 million reflects a $4 million or 5% increase, again driven by strong container growth.

Port of Houston Expanding, Adds Facilities

Port Commission approves Barbours Cut, Bayport, crane deals, new Bayport gate system. Corporation for four electric wharf cranes at Barbours Cut Container Terminal. The Port Commission also amended a contract with Konecranes for eight diesel electric container yard cranes for Barbours Cut to include three additional diesel electric container yard cranes for the Bayport Terminal at a cost of $5.9 million. The growth in containers is a leading indicator for the need for expanded facilities at Bayport to provide present and future customers with consistent, efficient service, as well as improvements in the truck gate technology at Bayport. Port Authority Executive Director Len Waterworth noted that growth seen in April largely was due to containers.

New Fireboats Headed to Houston

A two-week voyage through four Great Lakes and the Mississippi River will bring to the Port of Houston Authority the first of three high-performance fireboats to replace the current fleet. "As the nation's busiest port in terms of foreign tonnage and home to one of the world's largest petrochemical complexes, our firefighting team is second to none in protecting this national asset and the many who work here," said Port Authority Executive Director Len Waterworth. The five-member crew includes three from the Port of Houston Authority's Fire Department.

Port of Houston to Order Container Cranes

Port of Houston Commission to negotiate a contract for the purchase of 4 new electric cranes for Barbours Cut Container Terminal. Demonstrating continued investment in infrastructure improvements to better serve customers, the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has selected Konecranes Finland Corporation to supply four dockside electric container cranes for Wharf No. 1 at Barbours Cut Container Terminal. Barbours Cut, the Port Authority's first container terminal. Opened in 1977, the Barbours Cut Container Terminal has grown to be one of the premier container-handling facilities in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Port of Houston Commissioners Approves Dredging Agreements

The Port Commission approved U.S. Army Corps of Engineers MOA’s  for Maintenance Dredging at Barbours Cut and Bayport. Two Memoranda of Agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for maintenance dredging were approved by the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority at its recent meeting, including up to $550,000 for maintenance dredging of Barbours Cut Terminal berths and up to $400,000 for maintenance dredging for Bayport Terminal berths. Executive Director Len Waterworth said that the Port Authority garnered a substantial savings for each contract by combining its requirements with channel maintenance and using the Army Corps of Engineers contracts for these projects.

PoH: Upward Trend Continues in Financial Results

The Port of Houston Authority will partner with Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines to offer new services from the Bayport Cruise Terminal, it was announced at the Nov. 15 Port Commission meeting. Princess Cruises will make passenger cruise calls during the 2013-2014 cruise season, while Norwegian Cruise Lines has committed to three years and will begin service in 2014. This will result in a $200 million economic impact to the communities within the greater Houston region over this four-year period.

Port Authority Introduces New Management Team

Executive Director Len Waterworth has  implemented a reorganization of the management structure of the Port of Houston Authority designed to enhance efficiencies, drive higher profitability and ensure greater accountability, consistent with the Port Authority's vision and mission. The reorganization shifts to a structure that is based on collaborative teams with specific operations. Waterworth, who was appointed to his post in April, has named a leadership team at the Deputy Executive Director level to lead the new operational divisions.
