A fire broke out Saturday aboard U.S. 6th Fleet command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC20) while the ship was dry docked for maintenance in Rijeka, Croatia, the U.S. Navy reported. The incident did not cause any personnel injuries, the Navy said, adding that the fire was extinguished within 45 minutes by personnel from the ship's force and shipyard fire brigade. The cause of fire and extent of damage are under investigation. Mount Whitney has been in Viktor Lenac Shipyard since January for a scheduled maintenance overhaul that aims to extend the ship’s service life to 2039.

The U.S. 6th fleet’s command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), entered the final stages of its renovation and overhaul at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, in Rijeka, Croatia, July 11, 2015. After successfully completing the majority of a seven-month docking, renovation, overhaul, and at sea trial, Mount Whitney is weeks from returning to its forward deployed port of Gaeta, Italy. Mount Whitney underwent a three-day sea trial in the Adriatic Sea to test the operational capability of the vessel. The command utilized the sea trial as a means of performing necessary maintenance and performance checks on renovated weapon systems, Command, Control, Communications, Computers, & Intelligence (C4I), control mechanisms, generators, and fuel systems.

The US Department of Defense informs it has awarded a contract to Brodogradiliste Viktor Lenac D.D., Rijeka, Croatia, for the 'USS Mount Whitney', and a contract modification to General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., San Diego, California for work on 'USS Boxer'. Brodogradiliste Viktor Lenac D.D., Rijeka, Croatia, is being awarded a $21,383,394 firm-fixed-price contract for a 179-day Extended Service Life Program, dry docking and ship repair of USS Mount Whitney. The ship's primary mission is to provide communication, command, and control support to U.S. Navy forces at sea. The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $29,674,806. Work will be performed in Rijeka, Croatia, and is expected to be completed by July 2015. The renewal of the water ballast piping in a total quantity of more than 500 meters on board a bulk carrier of a major Croatian ship owner was conducted by as2con-alveus ltd. The ballast piping was repaired using the composite material overlay method COMPA. COMPA features lamination of a damaged pipe surface using carbon fiber-reinforced plastics. The repair plan and materials presented in the technical documentation were approved by the Croatian Register of Shipping and accepted by Bureau Veritas. Repair was performed during a drydocking at Viktor Lenac, Croatia from April 7-19, 2010.

Netherlands-based salvage specialists Multraship Salvage and Mammoet Salvage have successfully completed the removal of the wreck of a floating dock which sank in June 2007 at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, Rijeka, Croatia. The 541 ft Floating Dry Dock No. 7 weighed 7,000 tonnes and sank in 72 ft of water after an electrical power supply failure. Two previous refloating attempts had failed and after a thorough survey and testing of tanks it was decided that refloating of the dock was not feasible.

Croatian ship repairer Viktor Lenac won contracts worth $25 million to refit two foreign ships by the end of this year. One ship is owned by Baltimore-based Caldwell Cable Ventures and the other by British company Fisher and Sons. Both will be made over into specialized vessels for laying optical cables. The shipyard is currently negotiating another similar project, it said without giving any details. Lenac plans a major expansion worth $30 million this year in a bid to attract more profitable repair jobs.

The world's largest submersible lift ship arrived in Portland Harbor today at 10:00 a.m. where it docked at the International Marine Terminal. Measuring 712 ft. (217 m), the vessel is owned by Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT) of Lysaker, Norway. Viktor Lenac Shipyard in Rijekak, Croatia has chartered the vessel to lift and carry the 50-year-old 844-ft. (257.2 m) dry dock, used by the Bath Iron Works (Portland) Ship Repair Facility. The Croatian yard purchased the dry dock from the State of Maine for $3 million earlier this month. It is scheduled for renovations for eventual use in the Croatian shipbuilding and repair industry. During the first week of May, the dry dock is scheduled to be moved to the Maine State Pier and divided into two sections.

In September the shipyard completed repairs on nine vessels with various descriptions on the jobs performed. Standard shiprepair jobs were performed on the 8,945 dwt reefer vessel Hudson Bay, owned by German company Thien & Heyenga, and the 5,782 dwt LPG vessel Gas Century, managed by Cyprus based Hanseatic Shipping. The 18,582 dwt product tanker Calitea, owned by CA LI SA, Italy underwent standard drydock works continuing the good cooperation between the shipyard and the owner (the vessel has been under repair and conversion several times in Viktor Lenac during the last few years). The Oceanic Princess, the first of two new cable laying vessels purchased for conversion by specialist UK shipping group James Fisher and Sons PLC in the second half of last year, has been delivered on long term charter to it-International Telecom, a subsidiary of Advanced Technology Systems, Greensboro, N.C. Delivery to it-International on May 4 follows the successful completion of sea trials for the 5,000-ton former RoRo vessel, converted to its new role at the Victor Lenac shipyard in Rijeka, Croatia. Conversion work on the second ship, the 3,000-ton Oceanic Pearl, is at an advanced stage. This vessel is expected to undergo sea trials later in the summer prior to going on charter to it-International.

After last year's impressive increase in visitor numbers, this year's ShipRepair & Conversion Exposition is well on its way to comparable success with more than 180 companies already registered to exhibit their wares at the show. The expo, which includes representatives from more than 35 countries, will be held November 10-11 at London's Olympia Hall. Boasting a large variety of attendees such as shipowners, ship managers, marine engineers and conversion specialists, ShipRepair & Conversion 99 expects to be 20 percent larger than last year's expo. Returning exhibitors include: BP Shipping, Shell International, Stena Line, P&O Cruises and P&O North Sea Ferries.

Croatian repair shipyard Viktor Lenac signed agreements to raise a total of $30.4 million for financing a major enlargement through a new share issue and a loan. The company will increase its capital by $11.9 million, or almost 40 percent, by issuing 687,994 ordinary and preferred shares. Investors include International Finance Corporation, Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklungsgesellschaft, a private Dutch firm with a stake in Lenac - Beleggingsmaatschappij Ella III - and Croatian branch of Raifeisenbank Austria. Lenac will use the funds for the purchase of a new Aframax repair dock and other projects totaling $58.3 million that it hopes will increase its competitive edge in the region.

Interest in the European cruise ship repair market is currently focused on which shipyard will win the $31.3 million contract to repair the 1968-built, 70,327-grt cruiseship Queen Elizabeth II, owned by Cunard Line. There are currently three shipyards shortlisted for the work — Bremerhaven’s Lloyd Werft, Hamburg’s Blohm + Voss Repair and the U.K.’s A&P Southampton. The contract is expected to be awarded soon, with the drydocking dates scheduled for between November 12 and December 11.
