Obscure Traders Ship Half Russia's Oil Exports to India, China After Sanctions

A Liberian-flagged oil tanker set sail in May from Russia's Ust-Luga port carrying crude on behalf of a little-known trading company based in Hong Kong. Before the ship had even reached its destination in India, the cargo changed hands.The new owner of the 100,000 tonnes of Urals crude carried on the Leopard I was a similarly low-profile outfit, Guron Trading, also based in Hong Kong, according to two trading sources.The number of little-known trading firms relied on by Moscow to export large volumes of crude exports to Asia has mushroomed in recent months…

Rovco Charters VOS Star

Grindrod Shipping Updates on Fleet

Grindrod Shipping Holdings, a global provider of maritime transportation services in the drybulk and product tanker sectors, announced that it took delivery of the IVS Phoenix, a Japanese-built eco ultramax drybulk carrier newbuilding in June 2019. The vessel has been chartered-in from its owner for a minimum period of three years with options to extend for up to two additional years, at Grindrod Shipping’s election, it said.The Singapore-based company said that it sold the 2005-built Handysize vessel IVS Kawana for a gross price of $7.8 million with delivery to the buyers in April 2019."In June 2019, we completed a financing arrangement with a Japanese shipowner relating to the 2010-built Handysize vessel IVS Knot for a cash amount of $13.0 million…

Forth Ports Welcomes New Work Boats

Forth Ports, the UK’s third largest port group, has officially welcomed two new multimillion pound vessels to join their fleet of tugs and pilot boats working on the River Forth.The GBP 6 million investment in the two vessels to work on Scotland’s largest waterway sees the arrival of a powerful Sanmar tug and a state-of-the-art pilot boat from Holyhead Marine.The tug was built by leading ship builder Sanmar, is 28 metres long with two engines producing 2,700 brake horsepower and a bollard pull of 70 tonnes. Pirates Attack Chemical Tanker off Somalia

Suspected Somali pirates attacked a Singaporean-flagged chemical tanker on Friday but were repelled by guards on board, the European Union's Naval force said, the first such incident in several months. EU Navfor said in a statement the 50,000 metric tonne MT Leopard Sun was sailing from Sohar in Oman to Cape Town, South Africa, when it was attacked by two skiffs 160 nautical miles (295 km) off the coast of Somalia. "The skiffs approached from the stern and fired upon her, after which the on-board Private Armed Security Team returned fire with warning shots," EU Navfor said.

This Day In Naval History: June 22

1807 - Frigate USS Chesapeake, commanded by James Barron, is stopped by British frigate HMS Leopard after killing several of her crew and take Royal Navy deserters. Barron is court-martialed for not having his ship prepared to fight. 1884 - USS Thetis, USS Alert, and USS Bear, under Cmdr. Winfield S. Schley, rescue Lt. Adolphus W. Greely and six of his exploring party from Cape Sabine, where they are marooned for three years. 1898 - During the Spanish-American War, the Spanish destroyer Terror joins Isabel II in an attempt to torpedo USS Saint Paul, which fires at Terror, damaging the ship.

This Day In Naval History: March 22

1820 - Commodore Stephen Decatur was mortally wounded in a duel with Capt. James Barron at Bladensburg, Md., over criticism Decatur had when Barron lost his ship, USS Chesapeake, to HMS Leopard in 1807. 1915 - "Naval Aviator" replaces the title "Navy Air Pilot" for officers who become qualified as aviators. 1929 - Destroyers USS Robert Smith (DD 324), USS Moody (DD 277), and USS Selfridge (DD 320) protect Americans and their property during the Mexican Cristero uprising. 1943 - USS Gudgeon (SS 211) attacks a Japanese convoy 30 miles north Surabaya, Java, sinking an army cargo ship while surviving the depth charge attack by her escort vessels. Also on this date, USS Tambor (SS 198) damages a Japanese transport in the Sulu Sea, off Negros, Philippines.

Italian Shipbuilding: Cruising on the Crest of a Wave

Traditionally, Italy’s location and coastal development have continued to ensure the country a flow of income from its role as a strategic European hub in what has come to be known as the new “maritime century.” The country boasts of having the largest ferry fleet, the twelfth most extensive merchant shipping fleet in the world (fourth in Europe), and the third biggest European fishing fleet, with the national maritime cluster generating 3% of GDP. But its growing cruise industry is being looked upon as the game changer to the gradual slump being witnessed in the other sectors. Italy remains “one of the most important destinations, the market of origin for large cruise lines and a world leader in shipbuilding.

DHT Takes Delivery of VLCC Newbuild

Crude oil tanker shipper DHT Holdings, Inc. has today taken delivery of a newly built 299,900 dwt very large crude carrier (VLCC) from Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries. The new ship, DHT Leopard, will enter the spot market as the second vessel in a series of six fully funded VLCC newbuilds to be delivered to DHT from November 2015 to October 2016. The first ship in the series, DHT Jaguar, was delivered November 23, 2015. The next newbuild is scheduled for delivery in early April 2016.

Oman Drydock Company (ODC) is growing fast. In January, the yard hit an important milestone - its 300th drydocking. Harnessing the power of its new $1.8 billion, 1.3 million sq. m. shipyard it aims to become a leading shipyard in the Gulf over the next five years. A key selling point for ODC is its geographical position. ODC is in poll-position for the Asia – Europe shipping routes and critically, saving ship owners time, and potential disruption, as ships can come straight to us without deviating through the Strait of Hormuz.

With its coastline of 7,800 km, Italy is expediently nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea with the surrounding waters creating a tremendous resource for Italian economy. Businesses linked to the sea, including ocean technology firms, contribute significantly to Italy’s gross domestic product totaling more than $40 billion and representing 2.6% of total GDP. The Italian shipyard industry ranks among the top 20 in the world with ship building and boat-building accounting for 64% of the industry turnover, totaling 6.3 billion Euro in 2012, and Technological Equipment placed at 2.2 billion Euro. Oman Drydock Appoints Deputy CEO

Oman Drydock Company (ODC) informs it has appointed one of Oman’s most experienced maritime professionals as deputy CEO to help support and grow its expanding operations. Taking up the role of deputy CEO, Dr. Ahmed Al Abri, draws on 17 years experience working as a naval architect overseeing major projects in shipyards around the world in the U.K., Holland, Romania and Singapore. “When I first went to study naval architecture at Southampton University in the U.K., there were no shipyards in Oman,” he said.

Oman Drydock Bags VLCC Contracts

Onassis-controlled Springfield Shipping will convert two oil-bulk-ore (OBO) carriers to VLCCs at Oman Drydock Company (ODC), Oman. The multi-million pound contracts will see ODC convert the recently bought 319,869 deadweight tonnage (DWT), 2010-built Selma B to the Olympic Lion and the 2009-built Camilla T to the Olympic Leopard. The ships will be converted from oil bulk ore (OBO) carriers to very large crude carriers (VLCCs). The deal follows an identical job ODC completed for Springfield on the Olympic Luck (ex B Whale) that was successfully completed in January this year. First of Type DP2 IMO 70m Catamaran FCB Under Construction

Incat Crowther announced a first of type 70m Catamaran Fast Crew Boat (FCB), compliant with IMO HSC code and complete with a crew transfer system consisting of dynamic positioning equipment class (DP2) coupled with a stabilized access platform. Construction of the vessel has commenced at the shipbuilder Incat Tasmania, with delivery scheduled for September 2014. The vessel will operate as a fast crew transfer vessel for 150 offshore workers to multiple offshore installations.

Swissco Extends Monohull Crewboat Fleet

Incat Crowther announced that Cheoy Lee has delivered a second pair of 36m Monohull Crewboats to Singapore-based operator Swissco Holdings. Swissco Spring and Swissco Leopard follow on from the highly successful Swissco Puma and Swissco Cheetah. The design features 94 square meters of aft cargo deck, capable of carrying 50 tons. The main deck passenger compartment features 70 seats, beverage counter, luggage racks and a pair of heads. Forward doors allow direct access to the foredeck for bow transfer of personnel. Below decks, the vessels accommodate ten crew in six cabins.

Pink Lashings Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

As the first Peters & May Pink Lashings shipment leaves Palma for Fort Lauderdale, the global marine transport company is calling all yacht owners to support its campaign to help raise £25,000 for the charity, Breast Cancer Clinical Trials (BCCT). The initiative, launched this October in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, gives yacht owners using Peters & May the option to have specially manufactured pink lashing straps in support of the charity when their vessel is secured for transportation.
