U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fell in August as some processing plants reduced output and a heat wave increased gas demand for power, leaving less gas available for LNG production, according to vessel monitoring data and analysts.Above-normal temperatures and drought hit the U.S. Southwest last month, triggering record electricity demand and forcing providers to ask users to voluntarily reduce consumption. Ship Tech: GHG Emission Reduction focus of NYK LNG-Fueled PCTC Newbuilds
NYK has concluded a shipbuilding contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd. for four LNG-fueled PCTCs to be delivered from 2022 to 2023, intended to transport vehicles mainly to/from Europe and/or to the Middle East.The ships are designed with GHG emission reduction, and to that end they will be outfieed with WinGD’s X-DF2.0 iCER main engine, the first time they will be utilized in the world. According to NYK, the engine consumes less gas and reduces GHG by cutting methane emissions from exhaust gas by approximately 50%.
Asian Spot LNG Prices Slip on Weak Demand
Asian spot LNG prices fell this week on poor demand from major gas-consuming regions despite a slew of new purchase tenders. The May spot LNG contract fell by $0.25 cents to $5.40 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), with new production coming on stream in Australia and the United States. Analysts and traders mainly blamed low demand for driving prices lower. In the Middle East, Abu Dhabi was staying on the sidelines of the market and new solar power capacity in Dubai was eroding gas demand there.
Poland Received Less Gas Than Requested from Gazprom
Poland's gas pipeline operator Gaz-System said the country received about 20 million cubic metres of natural gas on Friday from the eastern direction, less than requested by the state-controlled importer PGNiG. "The increased requests of PGNiG are still not being met," Gaz-System's spokeswoman Malgorzata Polkowska said on Saturday. "But Poland is receiving from all import points more gas than its daily consumption." Gazprom is the sole supplier of natural gas from the eastern direction for Poland. New Gas Detector from Martek
Maritime safety equipment innovator, Martek Marine, has released a MED-certified portable gas detector that can be easily and safely recalibrated onboard, providing tamperproof certification to meet the many regulations governing detector calibration. The Paris and Tokyo MOUs and oil major criteria require calibration records to be kept for all fixed and portable gas detectors onboard. Martek’s Marine 4 is supplied with a self-certification/calibration station which provides the user with fail-safe automatic bump testing and calibration.
Hybrid Propulsion System for LNG Tankers
The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has developed the "Siship Coges" hybrid power-supply and propulsion system for use on LNG (liquefied natural gas) tankers. Two SGT 500 gas turbines are the heart of the electrical power generation system. This type of turbine is designed to be operated with gaseous and liquid fuels at the same time, as a result of which the "boil-off" of the LNG can be used as well as heavy-oil and diesel fuels. Two heat-recovery units, a steam turbine, and an optional diesel generator complete the on-board power system. The approximately 50,000 kW of generated electrical energy supplies two electric motors for powering the propeller shafts, the liquid-gas compressors, and pumps in the cargo area; as well as the on-board power supply system.
