Kremlin Urges Faster Action to Let Foreign Vessels Use Northern Sea Route

A Kremlin aide urged the Russian government on Thursday to adopt legislation allowing foreign-flagged vessels to use the Northern Sea Route (NSR), which Moscow wants to turn into a new Suez Canal.The NSR runs from Murmansk near Russia's border with Norway eastwards to the Bering Strait near Alaska.Although the route is physically challenging, it could cut sea transport times between Europe and Asia at a time when Russia's trade with Western countries is at post-Cold War lows following Moscow's decision to send troops into Ukraine."We have been left without transit routes.

Business advisory specialists, AlixPartners, honored by TMA for 'International Turnaround of the Year' for their work at DeepOcean Group. OPK Shipyards Delivers New Icebreaker

United Industrial Corporation (OPK) shipyards have delivered a diesel electric line icebreaker "St. Petersburg" to Rosmorport (Russian Maritime Port). A solemn ceremony of the signing of the takeover certificate and making the colors of the Russian Federation on the icebreaker was held at the Baltiysky Zavod plant, a part of OPK. The participants of this ceremony were Vladimir Putin, Prime-Minister of the Russian Federation, Igor Levitin, Russian Minister of transportation, Valentino Matvienko, the Governor of St. Petersburg, Sergey Pugachev and Lyudmila Narusova, members of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Alexander Gnusarev, OPK Chairman of the Management Board, Andrey Fomichev, CEO of the Baltiysky Zavod plant.

Mitropoulos Visits Russia

During his week-long official visit to the Russian Federation (July 11-15, 2005), IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E. Mitropoulos has received pledges of continued support for a full range of IMO activities, including the important IMO Voluntary Member State Audit Scheme.
