Northern Ireland’s Mivan has won contracts to outfit the interior of two cruiseships. The contracts, totalling around £3m, will be undertaken in the Bahamas and in Malta. Mivan will help refit Royal Caribbean International’s 73,192 grt Sovereign of the Seas at Grand Bahamas Shipyard (GBS) in Freeport, and carry out the conversion of Cunard’s 24,492 grt Caronia, to be renamed Saga Ruby for her new owners Saga Shipping at Malta Drydocks. Mivan Chief Executive, Dr. Ivan McCabrey, “This has been an excellent year for Mivan in the cruiseship sector with around £6m of new contracts secured to date. Carnival Splendor is the name Carnival Cruise Lines has chosen for its new 112,000-ton cruise ship scheduled to enter service in spring 2008. Representing a new class of ship for the line, the 3,006-passenger vessel will be constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and feature an innovative new design, including the largest spa and children’s facilities in the Carnival fleet. Highlights include a 17,800-square-foot spa. A 5,500-sq. ft. children’s playroom will be located mid-ship. Located aft will be a new sports deck featuring arena-style seating for games and other events, while a reservations-only supper club will be located atop the poolside Lido restaurant, providing diners with magnificent ocean vistas.

Carnival Cruise Lines’ 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny recently completed a 21-day dry dock that included an new teen club, a renovated Lido restaurant and children’s pool, a redesigned casino, and updated suite accommodations. Following the multi-million-dollar renovation, which took place in Freeport, Bahamas, the 101,353-ton Carnival Destiny resumed its regular schedule of year-round seven-day southern Caribbean cruises from San Juan. On this route, Carnival Destiny departs every Sunday on week-long voyages to St. Thomas/St. John, Dominica, Barbados and Aruba.
