Finland: A Hot-Bed of ICEBREAKER Technology

Finland is a traditional marine tech hub, with almost 90 company members in the Finnish Maritime Industries association. While the country has a storied maritime history across many sectors, based on geographic locale, it’s Arctic and ice marine technology is second to none, and it’s hoping the U.S. Coast Guard is taking notice.The Finnish maritime industry is hoping to get involved in developing the new icebreakers for the U.S. Coast Guard polar icebreaker program. Blohm + Voss to Open Refit Facility for Megayachts

Blohm+Voss has announced  that it has won the tender for the set-up of a new maintenance and refit facility for megayachts in La Ciotat, in the South of France. The company will partner with “La Ciotat Shipyards” (managed by SEMIDEP-Ciotat), the local company in charge of the site development which is providing a large dry-dock and neighboring workshop premises embedded within the existing shipyard. Blohm+Voss will utilize this new facility in the heart of the Mediterranean to maintain and service megayachts over 80 meters in length. Operation is planned to start in November 2016.

Divestment fully in line with ABB’s commitment to continuous portfolio optimization. ABB has divested five businesses with limited synergies in the past 11 months raising about $1 billion. Zurich, Switzerland, August 20, 2014– ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced it has signed an agreement to divest the ABB Full Service business for an undisclosed amount. The sale is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, subject to regulatory approval. The ABB Full Service business provides fully outsourced industrial maintenance services. ABB Full Service was developed as an adjacent business to ABB’s life-cycle service business and has become a successful stand-alone business unit.

ABS Forms Asset Performance Management Group

The new organization integrates several existing services into a single team focused on complete life cycle performance services that complement traditional classification services. Navy Contracts Awarded

Lockheed Martin, Maritime Systems & Sensors, Moorestown, N.J., is being awarded a $23,119,281 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the operation and maintenance of a limited in-service support program for the Royal Norwegian Navy new frigate (NNF) F310 CL program.These efforts include software baseline development/maintenance, software maintenance management, engineering support, configuration management, logistics repair, spares support and diminishing manufacturing sources/material shortages. Aker Kvaerner to Create New Jobs on Teesside

Aker Kvaerner Offshore Partner, headquartered in Aberdeen, is to open a satellite office in Stockton-on-Tees, UK. The office will be responsible for a range of upstream oil and gas projects, and modification work. The office is located within the existing Aker Kvaerner premises at Ashmore House, Stockton-on-Tees and will be operational from January 2006. "In addition to servicing work arising from current and future clients, Aker Kvaerner intends to develop the office as a center of engineering excellence to execute cross-border work for our Norwegian sister companies and clients," said Richard Strachan, operations director with Aker Kvaerner Offshore Partner Ltd. Good Vibes Surround General Dynamics, NNS $2.6B Deal

In a move that could possibly trigger the final slowdown in naval shipbuilding corporate asset consolidation, General Dynamics late last month made a $2.6 billion (a total which includes nearly $500 million of current debt takeover) bid to buy Newport News Shipbuilding. The move — while hardly a shock to defense insiders who have witnessed the proliferation of fewer, larger corporate entities serving the military markets — in essence provides the Pentagon a one-stop shop for the purchase of nuclear submarines and nuclear aircraft carriers. Just two years ago a similar attempt by General Dynamics was thwarted, largely because the bid in 1999 was hostile in nature and because of concerns regarding a monopoly of nuclear newbuilding capability.
