German Shipping Firms Convicted of Environmental Crimes

Two German shipping companies that owned and operated the Motor Vessel (M/V) Nils B, pleaded guilty today to an environmental crime in federal court in San Diego before the Honorable Jan M. Adler, announced Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden and United States Attorney Laura E. Duffy. W. Bockstiegel Reederei GmbH  & Co. KG (which operated the vessel) and W. Bockstiegel GmbH & Co. Reederei KG MS “NILS B” (which owned the vessel), pleaded guilty to one felony violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships for failing to accurately maintain an oil record book for the M/V Nils B. In doing so, the firms failed to disclose that oil contaminated water had been discharged into the ocean from the vessel without the use of pollution prevention equipment.

Wärtsilä Dual-fuel Engines for Baltic Sea Ferry

A new fast ropax ferry ordered by the Estonia based Tallink Grupp for its Tallinn - Helsinki route, will feature Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines running primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship is to be built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and is scheduled to be in operation from the beginning of 2017. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in February. By opting for Wärtsilä's dual-fuel (DF) engine technology with LNG used as the main fuel, the ship will comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) latest sulphur emissions legislation which came into force in January 2015. The Baltic Sea is designated as a Sulphur Emissions Control Area (SECA).

Wärtsilä DF Engines for Shell's Bunker Vessel

A specialized LNG Bunker vessel to be built at the STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Company yard in South Korea on behalf of Shell will be powered by Wärtsilä DF dual-fuel engines. The ship will be used to deliver gas to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuelled vessels in Northwest Europe. The newbuild contract is in direct response to the increasing acceptance by the shipping industry of LNG as a marine fuel. The engine order was placed with Wärtsilä in December 2014. Wärtsilä has been at the forefront of the trend towards LNG fuelled shipping. Its industry leading dual-fuel engine technology and gas supply and control systems have been largely responsible for the viability of gas as a fuel for ships.

Another Milestone for LNG Powered Ships in the U.S.

The U.S. continues to lead the push towards "LNG as Fuel" in the commercial shipping sector, as these 'historic' announcements are now becoming more routine. Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean) announced that Wärtsilä will supply main engines, generators and integrated LNG storage and fuel gas handling systems (LNGPac(TM)) for the largest LNG conversions ever undertaken in North America. In making this decision John Parrott, President of Totem Ocean, cited Wärtsilä's proven technology as a deciding factor in selecting the company.

Wärtsilä Milestone: Supplies to 100th LNG Carrier

Wärtsilä has now been contracted to supply Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel propulsion engines to 100 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carrier vessels. This notable milestone was recently passed with the supply of a LNG carrier in a South Korean shipyard. The 100 LNG Carriers represent approximately one quarter of the current global fleet. Wärtsilä's advanced dual-fuel technology was first launched in the early 1990s for use in land-based power plant applications. The first marine installation of the 50DF engine came a decade later. The technology enables the engine to be operated on either natural gas, light fuel oil (LFO), or heavy fuel oil (HFO), and switching between fuels can take place seamlessly during operation, without loss of power or speed.

Wärtsilä Powers New Carnival Vessel

Wärtsilä has received an order to power the new cruise vessel of Carnival Corporation, USA carrying the preliminary name Carnival Dream 3. The vessel will be built by the Fincantieri Monfalcone shipyard in Italy and its launch is scheduled for August 2011. Carnival Dream 3 will enter service in the spring of 2012. Wärtsilä's scope of supply includes six Wärtsilä 46 engines. Cummins, Wärtsilä Join to Provide Full Service Distributed Energy Solutions

Cummins Power Generation Americas and Wärtsilä NSD North America, Inc. have formed a joint venture, Combined Energy Systems, to provide natural gas and light fuel oil fired distributed energy solutions and services to the North American energy market. It is estimated the U.S. share of the market is $6 billion. Combined Energy Systems will be headquartered in Annapolis, Md. Mark S. Schroeder, general manager, power plants, Wärtsilä NSD North America, Inc., has been named general manager of the new organization. The 31 North American Cummins distributors will be the exclusive sales channel for the Cummins Onan, Cummins Wärtsilä and Wärtsilä NSD equipment and services offered by Combined Energy Systems.

Hyundai, MAN B&W Are At Top of Engine Power

Rising Korean aspirations as to market influence and technological standing could alter the established order in an important segment of the engine business. While MAN B&W announced opening contracts for its new L21/31 design as a marine auxiliary, Hyundai Heavy Industries was preparing to roll-out its first-ever, self-originated engine type targeted at a similar power range. The H21/32 signals the emergence of Hyundai, the world's largest producer of marine diesels, as a designer in its own right. The company's development of the in-house Himsen brand denotes a move towards increased technological self-reliance, given the wholesale dependence up until now on manufacturing licenses from foreign engine firms.
