Polish Seaborne LPG Import Growth Slowed to 7% in 2023

Growth in sea-borne imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Poland slowed 7% last year to 1.084 million metric tons, from a jump of more than 70% in 2022, with sea terminals working almost at capacity, according to traders and LSEG data.Sea-borne imports account for some 35% of total LPG supplies to Poland, while deliveries by rail was more than 50%.Poland also remained the main destination for Russian LPG, which was banned by the European Union last month over the conflict

COSCO Signs Up for Methanol Retrofits

COSCO Heavy Industry Shanghai Co. Ltd. has signed a contract with MAN Energy Solutions for the methanol retrofit of four main engines from COSCO Line’s Camellia and Virgo -class vessels – 13,800 and 20,000 teu respectively. Currently equipped with single-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-C10.5 engines, the vessels will be retrofitted to dual-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-LGIM10.5 units capable of operating on fuel-oil or methanol, in the process becoming the first vessels in COSCO’s fleet to sail on methanol.The contract also includes an option for the retrofit of an additional nine vessels from the line’s 20

MAN Engine Ordered for World's First Methanol-fueled VLCC

China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), the Shanghai-listed shipping giant and daughter company of China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI), has ordered an MAN B&W 7G80ME-LGIM (-Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) main engine in connection with the construction of a very large crude carrier (VLCC). Wallenius Wilhelmsen Orders MAN Engines for Dual-Fuel Car Carriers

RoRo shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has ordered 4 × MAN B&W 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIM (Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) dual-fuel engines capable of running on green methanol in connection with the construction of four pure car/truck carriers (PCTCs).The 9,300 CEU (Car Equivalent Unit) vessels will be built in China at the Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) and are scheduled for delivery from mid-2026 on. China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) has ordered six small-bore, seven-cylinder 21/31DF-M, methanol-burning gensets in connection with the construction of 2 × 9,300 ceu (car equivalent units) PCTCs for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES).The business represents the very first order for the new methanol-powered, MAN four-stroke genset. ABS Joins Project to Develop 40K cbm LCO2 Carrier

Maritime classification society ABS has joined a pioneering joint industry project (JIP) to collaborate on the development of a detailed design of a 40K cbm liquified carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier that meets Class and statutory requirements with Ecolog Services Ltd. BW LPG has demonstrated the value of dual-fuel LPG operations beyond the company’s initial aim of meeting IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap regulations.In October 2020, the LPG carrier BW Gemini became the first very large gas carrier (VLGC) to have its low-speed main engine converted to an LPG dual-fuel engine. The project started several years earlier, sparked by Oslo-listed BW LPG’s preparations for the IMO’s 2020 Sulphur Cap regulations.Compared to heavy fuel oil, LPG reduces Sox emissions by approximately 97%

First PCTC Order Placed for a Methanol-Fueled Engine

China Merchants Heavy Industry has ordered two MAN B&W 7S60ME-LGIM (-Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) engines in connection with the construction of two 9,300 ceu (car equivalent units) PCTCs for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES).The order is the first order globally for the S60ME-LGIM variant, the first methanol-fuelled engine for a PCTC, and the first Chinese-built methanol engine.Engine manufacturer, CSE, will construct the engines in China with respective vessel delivery set for 2025 and 2026; the order also contains an option for an additional four vessels.

Mexico Plans $4-$5 Billion LNG Hub at Gulf Port

Alfa Laval's newly launched E-PowerPack converts waste heat into power, enabling energy savings and compliance.Waste heat is a readily available but under-utilized energy source on board. Heat in the engine exhaust gas accounts for 50% of the energy from combusted fuel, and there is additional heat to recover from steam and liquids. MAN ME-GI Engines Ordered for 10 Seaspan Box Ships

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has ordered 10 MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10.5-GI engines in connection with the construction of 10 7,000-teu containerships for Seaspan Corporation, the world's largest, independent container vessel owner.The contract includes an option for five further vessels. Partners Launch LNG Training in Singapore

GTT Training said Monday it has reached a training partnership agreement with Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) to facilitate the delivery of GTT Training’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry related courses at WMI’s training facility in Jurong, Singapore.The partnership includes the installation of GTT Training’s Liquid Gas Handling Simulator ‘G-SIM’ at the Wavelink Maritime Simulation Center and the co-sharing of expertise.The LNG handling and operations courses will be geared toward personnel involved with LNG carriers, terminals and LNG-fueled vessels.

As part of the IMO’s commitment to reducing the maritime sector’s output of greenhouse gases by 50% over the next 30 years, January will herald the new global 0.5% sulfur cap.This is a major transition for ship operators and owners, but they have several options.Many shipowners are switching to low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), but this will mean a significant leap in vessel operating costs. The price of LSFO on 1 January 2020 is not yet known, but analysts have estimated that the price could be between $100-300 per tonne more than HSFO.

Ships Pass Dual-Fuel Methanol Milestone

Marinvest, the Swedish ship-management company, has announced that its ‘Mari Jone’ and ‘Mari Boyle’, two of the first vessels powered by dual-fuel ME-LGI (-Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) engines operating on methanol, have each passed 10,000 operating hours on the alternative fuel.
