Portugal: Searching for Lost Maritime Glory

Although a small nation on the Atlantic shores, Portugal in the 16th century was credited with discovering most of the “New World” previously unknown to Europe. In the process it became the richest nation in the West. The names of Bartolomeu Dias (Africa), Vasco da Gama (India) and Fernão de Magalhães – Magellan, who led the first circumnavigation of the globe but was killed in the attempt – echo down the centuries. Over the years the country underwent a transformation and saw the hard won glory fade. In fact until 1974, strong public protection dominated the national shipping sector, especially regarding merchant shipping to Portugal’s overseas territories.

LISNAVE Stable Despite Workload Reduction

Photo: LISNAVE

As expected, 2013 did not bring significant changes to the evolution of the world economy and consequently the rate of growth of world trade. With regard to the maritime freight market, the same situation of imbalance between supply and demand continued with a consequent reflection in value of freight rates, which resulted for the third consecutive year in general cost containment by the shipowners and consequently, a reduction in the volume of the maintenance works of existing fleets.

TRAILBLAZERS: Ultrastrip Helps Clear the Way

While convention holds that the most vital marine technological advances happen in or around the engine room and bridge, the business of coating and corrosion control - stripping, preparing and applying - arguably poses the most strenuous test the marine environment offers. It is a vessel's initial coating and maintenance thereafter that largely determines a vessel's lifecycle, thus its profitability. Coatings, much like mechanical systems, require constant attention to ensure that they are performing the duty required, namely maintaining the structural integrity of the steel beneath. That said, the last place a vessel owner want to see its vessel is in drydock, with a battalion of workers vigorously peeling, stripping and chipping away at a vessel's armor.

Legal Matters Top Ship Repair And Conversion Agenda

London's Grand Olympia Hall will be the setting for this year's Shiprepair & Conversion 2000 exhibition and conference from November 15-16. Topics of discussion highlighted in a keynote debate at the conference include conflict between regulators, owners and repair yards over ship standards. An international panel, along with 150 delegates representing all facets of the industry — will look at a common shipyard complaint — the delays of repairs by owners, which has become all too easy by obtaining class extensions. These extensions can be granted with little effort, despite classification society claims of tougher crackdowns on this issue. The conference's opening session is comprised of the industry debate on market trends, price levels, new opportunities and yard competition.

Change in Shareholding at Lisnave

There has been change in the shareholding at Portugal’s Lisnave following discussions between Germany’s German Industrial Group (GIG) and Portugal’s Estudos e Projectos Navais SA (Navivessel).
